Moving TO Canada? What a fool...

Having worked on both sides of the border, and being a Canadian citizen, I can tell you the only three things that keep a person in Canada are: 1. family, 2. incompetence, or 3 both. I fall into the #3 category.

But think of all the things you have to look forward to: higher taxes, less freedom, horrible health-care (it's illegal to have private coverage here), and a media even more leftist than France.

How is this different from American requirements? As a Canadian, I needed to get proper approval/documents to work in the USA: if the US government decided that engineering jobs were limited or scarce, I'm sure they'd have taken those papers away from me. Every country has the right to decide who they will/won't let into their country, and on what terms.

Now if the US would only apply this to hispanics...

  8. PHB? on UnitedLinux Ready for Official Launch · · Score: 1

Am I missing something? Seems like the PHB's at Suse are spreading themselves thin. Just a few /. articles down Suse says they're introducing a desktop version. Is this desktop version going to be Suse? is it going to be United Linux? Is it going to be a bit of both? or will it be Desktop Suse, built to UL specs? Seems silly to me to be doing much the same thing in two different places.

I personally think it's neat, but I can't see myself paying for something that doesnt in any way "help" me.

Now, without having read any of the press releases, so I may be talking out of my ass here, but if Sega is shifting it's focus to software, who's to say it couldn't begin to port current games, and even develop new games for the Indrema system?

    Any thoughts?

  14. Pure operations research... on How Much Manpower Is Behind Your Help Desk? · · Score: 3

I'm kinda shocked that with all of the techno-savvy people that commonly read this site, noone after some 50 posts has suggested the proper, i.e. scientific method to solve this problem.

The method I'm talking about, of course, is queueing theory, defined as the study of the phenomena of standing, waiting, and serving. Queueing theory is an industrial engineering principal developed in the last century to deal with precisely these types of problems in industries from the call centre business, to drive-through restaurants.

Mathematically, there are several different types of models one can use, depending of course on the characteristic of the system. For example, is there one queue from which all users go to several servers (operators)? Or do several queues feed several servers (in this case, individual lines devoted to specific technical issues). Is there a maximum queue time for a customer before he/she will balk the queue and leave?

Once the proper queueing model has been established, (or you've decided what question it is you're trying to answer) statistical data should be collected on everything from inter-arrival time (the time between successive calls), to service times (avg, std. deviation, etc.).

Anyway, I'm on the verge of getting into way too much detail here, if anyone is seriously interested in knowing more, e-mail me.

  18. The Myth Continues on Creation of a Cybernation · · Score: 1

Neat concept? Perhaps, but the ideology behind this is rather frightening.

The whole concept of the former authoritarian state of Yugoslavia was to strip people of their culture & heritage, freedom of association & religion, and independent thought.

The evolution of the internet as a true forum of individualism and free expression is threatened any time someone sets up an organization such as this. It will most CERTAINLY not be a democratic "state", as I doubt any ideas about Croatian, Bosnian, or Albanian independence would not be tolerated.

Suppose 400 serbs, 300 Croats, 150 moslems, and 150 Slovenes join this "cyber-nation". What happens when, as is the rule in Balkan Yugoslavia, the Croats, Slovenes, and Moslems decide unanimously they want nothing to do with Cyber-Serbs. Do they get to take a portion of the server, RAM, domain name, etc. with them? I suppose we can expect the cyber-serbs running the site to start E-cleansing?

    Let's be real.
