    Your problems seem to be mainly RPMs.. this is a braindead packaging scheme. Try Debian, it has a much more full-featured and foolproof packaging system.
    Linux is screwed for Joe-ex-Windows-"power"-user for at least another year. We are trying to make it simpler for you... please be patient

    Source code is compiled the same way on any Linux distro...

    Uhhh...unless you want a cellular link, what's the point of a laptop modem? You have to be tied down to the phone cord anyway right? SO GET A REAL MODEM AND SCREW IT INTO YOUR SERIAL PORT WHEN YOU NEED TO GET ONLINE! :)

    I've been using 3.51 every day for months now.. it's crashed twice... Netscape has crashed three times and I use Opera more...
    Unfortunately, Opera adheres to W3C standards and doesn't render bad HTML very well... ;)

    Personally, I can and will use whatever apps I see fit... I have no need for a DE but even if I did what's to stop me from using a QT-based Opera with Gnome? Or Mozilla with KDE?
    What's the problem with a commercial app using QT? That's what QT was designed for...
    As long as they don't link it with other people's GPL'ed code and try to distribute the binaries ;)

    Clunky?
    Try getting rid of all the toolbars and just using keystrokes... tres svelte!
    Z= back one page
    X= forward one page
    Q= back one link
    A= forward one link
    F2 = type in an address
    F5 = reload
    etc., etc.

    Personally, I find keystrokes much quicker and more convenient than pointy-clicky.... that's why use linux when I can!

    And Opera is MUCH quicker rendering pages than those OTHER browsers :) Not to mention that it actually makes efficient use of it's cache...

    Netscape is the only program I use in Linux that is consistently ill-tempered...
    It's statically linked with Motif which makes it a 11 MB monster that crashes, takes 20 seconds to load,
    and sometimes decides to take off with the cpu just to run an animated gif or something.
    I will be sooooo glad when 5.0 comes out.

    make, gdb, gcc, profile, etc., and a good shell are much more flexible, especially for large projects. It should be taught in school.
    gvim is a very nice text editor if you take the time to learn it... all Linux really needs is time for the toolkits to develop good GUI-building apps and a few good books to be written and real programmers will start to realize what a clean and efficient tool you have, especially when you have access to ALL the code :^D

    The only thing holding back the computer industry is the proprietary source code. If every "OS" had the ability to use the same filesystems and binaries, they could compete on an equal footing like DOS once did and Linux and *BSD do today.

    I'm sure Gateway, Apple, Be, etc. ( not to mention all the *nix folks ;) would love to get their hands on the source for Win32... the promised Amigas would run Windows Office apps fast enough just in emulation. It would then be an attractive platform for consumers, thus making it accessable to developers who want to take advantage of something as reliable and lean as QNX.

    What if everyone freed their code?
    sigh...
    I guess a competition of merit is not the most desirable situation for the greedy... too bad for the rest of us.
