  3. My own overclocking on Athlon 64 In-depth Overclocking Guide · · Score: 1

Up untill my cheep ass PSU killed my previous system (yes, I know, my bad) I had overclocked my 1.6Ghz AthlonXP 2000 to 2Ghz stably, I had a watercooler from a previous setup which was forever overheating, so I installed that, the result? A cpu that idling ran at 35C and under load at 39C (after overclock, though the temps were about 1C lower in each case prior). That speed boost for most things meant that windows booted up a tad quicker, and was slightly more responsive, but when gaming, the effect of theoverclock really made itself known - playing things such as Call of Duty, whilst perfectly playable before, had a certain amount of smoothness that simply wasn't present before.

Had I not been such a tight wad with regards the psu, I'd still be using that system. As it is, I'm about to build myself an Athlon64 system, sadly the watercooler won't be used this time around - it was socket A/370 only, shame. I also suspect that that chip had the potential to go much faster also, but since the overclock was achieved purely through fsb (the board had no provision to change the multiplier, which was locked in any case) I was stopped by running out of rungs on the motherboard.

One of the interesting side effects of this is that in paying off these companies, Microsoft has all but pulled the plug on the upcomming appeal by Microsoft against the EU's desision to spank them. They're going to win because beyond Real Networks, the rest of the defendants have pulled out as a result of this and other deals recently.

This is a very calculating move by the lads in Redmond and will have far reaching effects.

As much as I dispise M$, I trully admire their cunning in these matters.

"From a marketing standpoint, this is an awesome position for Sony to take. They've had a reputation of kind of screwing people over with copy protection *cough*minidisc*cough*."

TBH I've not had that much of an issue with the minidisc drm, my biggest gripe with it was the fact that the software interface for transfering files etc sucked donkey balls and the device itself could not be used within windows as a portable Magneto Optical drive (which it is) for backing up/restoring stuff... But thats just me I guess (Yes you could transfer files to it within the software, but then the whole drm thing kicked in if for instance you changed motherboards or replaced the hard disk).

"In an industry where the corporations are suing their customers, there is PLENTY of room for large companies to take a new stance and embrace the now pissed off consumers. If you get in on that early enough in the game, as Sony appears to be doing, then people start rallying behind you against the companies who AREN'T taking that position."

Indeed and I couldn't agree more with your take on it or their new customer friendly stance. Its a change that has been much needed imho. I wonder how long the other big players will take to realise just how vunerable their tactics (By proxy using the RIAA) have left them to just this sort of move?

Tbh I expected better of the EU (One of my biggest mistakes that I continually make is that I overestimate peoples capacity for good) I, like many others in Britain looked on with horror at some of the legislation the US had passed through, what many of us didn't see at the time however was that our elected representatives also looked at these policies, and started to recreate them!

The EU parliment and the Council... its a bit like Iran only on a continent scale... You've got our representatives doing what they can to pass laws, only for the Council to slap it down, sometimes the council are right, but many many more times they are dead wrong.

The one thing I'd change about the council would be that they themselves cannot create laws outside of the EU parliment, that they may be able to moderate and send back (As is the case with the House of Lords in the UK afaik) but not in of themselves create wholly new law.

As of this week I'll be looking for a means of creating a permanantly encrypted connection to a proxy server, they want to know where I go, then they can work for my information!

And this is where things are going, and the problems you face are going to be replicated to a much greater degree over time as more and more layers of DRM come into play.

If people have to buy 3 or 4 different DVD/CD players just to play all of their legally purchased content over the next few years, then this is going to be a mainstream problem brewing. Contrary to the belief of Hollywood, there are people, even in developed countries that simply cannot afford to keep up with such a pace, and if told that the brand new DVD player they just bought will not play next months/years movies, then they will simply say one of two things "Bollox to you pal" and take the device back, or "Thats fine, I'll have a chat to my mate down the road who can get me the same movie a week or so after its released, that WILL play".

The RIAA and MPAA are kidding themselves if they think for one second that a good proportion of the poorer in our society will put up with this sort of rubbish for long (Hell, even better off folks wont put up for it for much longer, not because of budget restraints, but simply because they've had enough
