It would be interesting to see if we as consumers could request to turn off these black boxes, or find some way to disable them without interfering with the operations of the cars safety systems. Either that or a large electromagnet placed next to it!
Seriously though, there is an issue of control here. I own the device, and therefor I should have the right to turn it off. After all I just paid for the car, so I should have the right to do with it as I want as long as it meets safety requirements (although I see some states are now mandating them in new cars)

I just read an article which states the European Central Bank are quietly planning on introducing RFID in all european bank notes by 2005. Bang goes the anonimity afforded by cash transactions.
In the UK, I have gone through this a number of times, and I certainly know that in the UK, and in most european countries, the Bankruptcy agent / Reciever / Liquidator owns all rights to intellectual Property, and has the right to sell it on to interested parties.
The reasoning behind this is that this is where the value in a company is, and when the company goes bust, it is generally due to owing money and investors pulling plug. These investors become the majority creditors (after the tax man and payroll), and any value left is up to the reciever appointed to sell on for as much as is possible to pay off some of the debts that are left by the company (minus the recievers fees).
You might be able to work with the recievers even this long after the company folding, and see if they are interested in using your consulting services to help produce value in the bankrupt company, and then there may be a future for your software if the recievers can employ you to manage the software to sell on the remains of the bankrupt company to another software company that would want to take the product on..
I know Im going to be flamed to hell for saying this, but probably 95% of the people will have Microsoft windows at home, probably MS office at home and wont want to change their working practices, particularly teachers. I asked a teacher friend of mine if he would like it if he would rather have Windows with office in his school, or a Linux with something like staroffice, and he instantly said he'd rather have the windows software, as it is easier and more familiar and overall less hassle for him. He doesnt want to learn another OS. He knows windows - why should he change. Face it, windows wins on the familiarity front and thats not going to change.
BTW - before I am flamed away to hell:), I use two debian linux machines and a NT box as my everyday work machines, and heavily work on the debian boxes and would not trust the NT for my work in any situation. I have been using *ix platforms for more years than I can remember and prefer it as a working environment for my job. But remember, horses for courses.

Frankly, I think IP law is good - and you can make and protect ideas and patent them. More money for someone who had the brains to think it up and not some person who is just copying someone else.
I left university because I was not happy with acedemia. Most of them were moaning people who moaned they were poor yet still refused to get a part time job. I at that point was supporting myself in a part time job through university.
I left and got myself a high paying job in IT security and am loving it.
Its a capitalist world and people should start realising that. It is the survival of the fittest and if they dont get it first or second - they wont get it at all, and thats tough.

Why is it lame - he might want to get some publicity for his encryption work and openssh just werent fast enough to get to the url. If he uses / works with ssh why not register the domain name.
Also - if openssh think he is squatting - pay him money to leave and be done with it:) All for people who were faster than a company to utilize their web names. Make as much money out of them as possible. (money is goooooddddd)
Personally - I think - if they want to go MS and standardise - its for the better - no more converting between docs and no seperate training. If the want to go MS - let them - Its a free country and they can choose what they want to use.

I think there will be a market for a doorframe airline style gate for homes that will fry rfid's as you walk through the door.
