I thought I might creatively show how not only are the figures for Piracy of XP over the top but that in fact Microsoft is abusing its power in the market place to sell unneeded licences.
Site Licences already mentioned, Transfering os from an older system to a new one. certainly legal if you bought a retail licence and didn't Xp allow you to install on 2 PC's (Desktop / Laptop). buying a copy for a better price from elsewhere. Ubuntu installs and other Linux versions. Other Windows Versions 2000, ME or 98SE (still available as retail packs if you look hard enough) Installed copy of OSX86 (yeah probably pirated but not pirated from Microsoft) BSD mustn't forget about that either and honerable mentions to BEOS and OS2 warp and a dishonerable mention for a copy of SCO Unix. mustn't forget Beta test/ release candidate versions of Vista. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/pre view.mspx
Is it possible that some people realise that Vista is due for release soon and decided not to buy XP when Vista will be available to buy shortly?
To assume 1900 PC's had Pirated copys of XP Pro isn't credible, perhaps in 4 weeks time it will be pirated copys of Vista Enterprise.
ok so 1900 copys of BEOS is also unlikely but for many Linux users paying the Microsoft Tax is abhorent and buying a barebones system without an OS is preferable
Might I also suggest that the cost of buying a PC with XPhome and one without an OS is generally comparable for the small difference in price in most retail bundles. Is it worth the hassle what with WGA making regular checks to see if its on a legal copy of windows today.
It is also a false comparison to say that 2,000 Pc's were sold and reflecting the share of 5% of Desktops running Linux that would only account for 150 PC's being bought for Linux use. The vast majority of PC's running Windows will have been bought with Windows preinstalled and of the overall sales of PC's 2000 barebones systems probably would account for less than 5% of annual PC sales in Australia. I would put it to you that its likely that over 95% of PC's sold in australia came preinstalled with Windows and overall more Windows Licences were sold than are actually in use and if that is true it's not a case of piracy costing sales but of Microsoft exploiting and controlling the market to such an extent they are literally getting money for nothing (and when the deal with novell takes effect Microsoft will be getting paid royaltys on installations of Suse Enterprise Linux as well).
The truth is we do not know how many of these PC's are running legal operating systems and no way of knowing without physically checking.
Historically unix got "stolen" from the people who wrote it. Linux was almost a rerun but this time using the GPL to stop Linux being hijacked. Now Novell and Microsoft are hijacking Linux.
Morally its outrageous, It is a protection racket, isn't that what steve balmer is saying buy your linux from these guys or we're going to sue your ass's (maybe).
sad thing is to a company its a necessary cost, the cost of litigation is far higher.
Vmware doesn't work on every system. second you need enough ram to be able to run the host and guest OS but firstly you need a good enough CPU. a K6(400) wasn't capable for example.
Maybe an alternative might be to remotely run the guest os using the older PC's as clients. or just do the sensible thing and buy some better systems.
The big word is if, Theres plenty of places just out of view of CCTV camera's, numerous side streets, that are much better locations for a fight for example.
People are aware of CCTV and will avoid it when they can see it might lead to them being arrested. You probably do see a reduction in crime where CCTV camera's operate, but it doesnt make people more law abiding just displaces the criminal behaviour to other area's Other areas may be as close as a few metres from the cctv covered area.

Seems to me that buying your enterprise solution means paying microsoft.
also one of the key problems with SCO's legal case was the IP they thought they owned belongs to Novell At what point will it be before Novell starts demanding liciences from commercial users of Linux.
I can't see a legal challenge against Novells breach of the GPL being easy to win. Who is going to fight this battle, because its going to be a lot harder than fighting SCO.
there is no melting point for steel. melting points are for pure elements! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eutectic There are a number of important temperatures for steel 723 degree's C being one and 350 degree's C being another.
723 degree's C is the temperature at which steels exhibit a phase change and will enter a pasty stage. if you look at the iron carbon phase diagram you can see what happens and when is dependent on the carbon content of the steel (and will be further modified by the presence of other elements).
I don't know enough about the steel alloy used in the twin towers to be able to be able to do more than speculate wildly but if the temperatures in the wtc did reach 350 C for around an hour the sulphides would have migrated to the grain boundaries and with the weight baring on the steel structure that could have been enough to cause the collapse.
On a lighter note (no pun intended) steel can burn see what you can do with wire wool.
Can you explain something to me, my laptop came with a legal copy of xp home installed and the codecs i use. I choose to run ubuntu on this laptop assuming I am in the united states are the codecs illegal for me to use since I already got them licienced to me via Microsoft? What if I use them on another PC?
actually it's kind of nice, most people using gadugadu and tlen are Polish Speakers.
Wouldn't you prefer to find a messaging network and client where everybody speaks your language, maybe aim or msn or yahoo or icq or perhaps paltalk. Personally I like both tlen and gg since they both give me a chance to practice Polish. Tlen and GaduGadu both cache messages so when you sign in you get any messages you have missed and free Email which seems to be relatively spam and scam free.
tleenx2 is a client for tlen on ubuntu and gaim does a good job with gadu gadu.
Tlen also has a form of messaging a lot like plain text email where you can post a reply along with the preceeding conversation (without the delay of email) and also sms messaging to mobile phones within poland. I think you can link your gadu gadu account with your tlen account.
but at the end of the day what does it matter to you if gaim has some functionality that you will never use someone thought it was of value and sat down and coded it (probably a Pole).
gaim does a good job of bringing together the various messaging clients and that is one of its most useful features.
I would be surprised if there were not a lot more national/language based instant messaging programs with thier own user base.
As a final thought gaim is a cross platform cross protocol messaging client, should Polish Linux users be forced to boot windows so they can talk with thier windows and gadugadu using friends?
I would want to generate a pdf when I want a single file with a beginning, that is searchable and easy to navigate within, that is pretty much immune to compatability problems with browser and choice of operating system and will be viewed pretty much as I intended.
html and pdf are different formats with different overlapping applications, isn't it obvious?
how about htmldoc takes a bunch of html files creates a pdf with hyperlinks in it. along with html help workshop from ms its quite easy to go from chm to html to pdf htmldoc is gpl as well as commercial and included in ubuntu repositorys.

There is a term for matters such as these its called an irish answer to an irish problem, you see the Uk and ireland have a close relationship and even before the EEC the Irish and British were free to come and go pretty much as they pleased between each others countrys.
Anyway the irish solution to divorce was for the husband to move over to England for a while and divorce his wife from there and the divorce is recognised in Ireland. Similarly an Irish woman while being prevented from seeking an abortion in ireland is pretty much free to get one in the uk.
I guess in ireland there is a difference between whats approved and whats allowed.
Is the person complaining about not being allowed his domain name irish?
first off the ubuntu forum and wiki is invaluable, if you search with google or the ubuntu forum search you most times will find an answer. However when you don't or its not clear enough then it is time to post with as clear a statement of what you are trying to do and what difficuties you are having.
nobody is forced to help you but at least ensure you have helped yourself!!
There are the occasional socially maladjusted or just plain grumpy having a bad day individuals who might well respond purely to get your backup, but it doesn't matter, trolls are everywhere, (your reading slashdot). funny enough is i have never seen posts like that on ubuntu's forums.

thats a two edged sword, what defines a book, being published in some way? lots of things are published and a matter of public record just a very obscure public record. Imagine how easy it would be to dig the dirt on anyone, especially someone who has held or holds public office...
but google are not loaning books, what they are doing is presenting a selection of pages from books and if i am not mistaken offering links to where you can buy the book. It is basically enough to give you an idea as to the contents style and potential usefulness of a particular book.
if you find something useful, then you can order it or perhaps request it from your local library maybe eventually some enterprising companys will let you download a pdf of the book letting you get on with reading it while waiting for the paper version to arrive or be printed or to be back in stock...
of course this means all the out of copyright, creative commons and other freely available books become widely available too, maybe this is what the publishers fear vastly increased competition for eyes.
in some ways it is the same fears that riaa and mpaa fear from p2p the ability for consumers to make an educated informed choice about what to buy and what to avoid like the plague.
Thats what really makes me angry the pretext is copyright but in reality its control, control of what we read what we think what we should or should not have access to. Lets be honest here accessing snippits of a book online only increases the chances of a sale being made. so the only thing being lost here is control of access to the published works out there. All of a sudden a small publishing house has as much presense as a multinational.
I really am on googles side on this one or perhaps I should say google is on my side and yours.
lets not completly disparage synaptic package manager, select it from the administration menu search for a key word select a likely package tick the checkbox and install it.
when it does get complicated then it is far easier to tell someone to open a terminal window and type (or copy and paste) the following... giving the same help via a gui isn't so easy.
what is a problem is introducing new users to the 'ubuntu' way of installation because of prior training on windows or osx
windows is basically download unpack click on setup or insert disk press setup. mac download mount image and press setup or drag into apps folder. if a package is in a repository already then its as easy. However users will want to install software from outside sources and this is a problem.
There are conflicting issues which need to be addressed. Easy installation, security and speed of deployment. as a developer the problem of how to distribute is thorny and as a user who do you trust. Package X could be a trojan, this is blindly ignored by windows users and look at the results.
if synaptic did make it easy to add a local source how vunerable would that make a newbies installation. I started with the thought that adding a wizard to synaptic to import outside packages was a good idea, but after considering the implications I see that as being dangerous. It is an advantage to need to seek help with installing package X since if it is malware your likely to find out.
I guess it is in the spirit of ubuntu that we learn to trust our software from our community, where the windows way is blind trust or trusting official sources only and we know how much we can trust Sony for example.
The assumption with the BBC is that everyone in the uk watches it thus everyone should pay for it. with digital Tv there is no need to make this assumption encrypt the BBC and then anyone who wants to watch the BBC can, and pay for it too.
if english is not your first language should you be paying for something which is inaccessable to you. If your income is low your a pensioner or unemployed or a one parent family. Should the BBC have a right to your meagre resources. You see the real problem for the BBC is that already it serves a relatively small fraction of the public its audience figures for its shows are quite small compared to the size of the uk population. Its biggest fear is that given the choice between having the BBC or not many people would choose not.
There are 1000's of channels available outside the BBC that are recievable in the uk and don't recieve a penny from the fee and millions upon millions watch these channels without paying the BBC a single penny.
In fact millions of people around europe can watch the BBC simply by pointing a satellite dish at 28.2 east and using a FTA decoder.
The Radio and later TV licience fee was initially a reasonable system. since the BBC was all that you could get in the current situation where the BBC is a small fraction of what you can recieve that model isn't tenable any more. in fact its quite possible that changing to a subscription fee might even gather more revenue since it would be possible to subscribe to the bbc from outside the uk. The current system denys the possibility of revenue from other european broadcasters carrying bbc channels to thier subscribers. ( you cant sell the bbc in france for example when anyone can get it for free)
on an unrelated note here is an interesting story from the BBC about Bill Clinton supporting ubuntu http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/5388182.stm it's free to all non uk residents or £131.50 if you live in the uk. guess it's ok for the rest of the world to get the bbc services for free.
alternative action boot safemode open cmd window and type regedit and delete every occurance of wga. change wgatray to read only if you cant delete it and reboot. then generate a new corperate key and install service packs.
download firefox install download ubuntu and install.
seriously its all it takes to get round wga the only people suffering with wga are the people who paid for xp
first of all giving away a reader and charging for a writer isn't new. Microsoft does the same thing a free word reader and an expensive office suite to write with or a basic tool (word pad) writing pdf files isn't hard even on windows you install a free pdf print driver and everything you can print can be a pdf file.
now if you want something a little better then try htmldoc. This program can generate pdf files from a collection of html pages. its sold as a commercial product but is dual licienced under the GPL and if your running ubuntu you can just apt-get it from the main repositories.
The GPL version is very useful.
as a final point even the parent must be aware that creating pdf files is built into openoffice. so the post was just a troll but since i found htmldoc last night I thought others might find it extremely useful especially if they have any ebooks in chm format.
Oldest Driver There are two male drivers who were issued with new driving licenses at the age of 104: Fred Hale Sr (USA, b. December 1, 1890) was issued with a driving license in February 1995 at age 104, and drove until it expired on his 108th birthday in 1998. Fred currently holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest living man.

I really am on googles side on this one or perhaps I should say google is on my side and yours.
lets not completly disparage synaptic package manager, select it from the administration menu search for a key word select a likely package tick the checkbox and install it.
... giving the same help via a gui isn't so easy.
when it does get complicated then it is far easier to tell someone to open a terminal window and type (or copy and paste) the following
what is a problem is introducing new users to the 'ubuntu' way of installation because of prior training on windows or osx
windows is basically download unpack click on setup or insert disk press setup.
mac download mount image and press setup or drag into apps folder.
if a package is in a repository already then its as easy.
( you cant sell the bbc in france for example when anyone can get it for free)
on an unrelated note here is an interesting story from the BBC about Bill Clinton supporting ubuntu
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/5388182.stm
it's free to all non uk residents or £131.50 if you live in the uk. guess it's ok for the rest of the world to get the bbc services for free.
alternative action
boot safemode open cmd window and type regedit
and delete every occurance of wga. change wgatray to read only if you cant delete it and reboot.
then generate a new corperate key and install service packs.
download firefox install download ubuntu and install.
seriously its all it takes to get round wga the only people suffering with wga are the people who paid for xp
how wrong can one post be.
first of all giving away a reader and charging for a writer isn't new. Microsoft does the same thing a free word reader and an expensive office suite to write with or a basic tool (word pad)
writing pdf files isn't hard even on windows you install a free pdf print driver and everything you can print can be a pdf file.
now if you want something a little better then try htmldoc.
