Ok, but why kiddie porn? I don't get it. What on Earth made them develop this software? It seems a bit out of character unless they're after publicity.
True, true. It's funny how lazy many of us (myself included, at times) have become. We see that somebody has taken the time to write up some form of technical document (or whatever) and just assume that it's correct. Take K&R 2nd Edition, for instance. There are a ton of mistakes; some of which could potentially lead to bad programming techniques (e.g. casting the return value of maloc(), which isn't necessary).
On a side note, I did read the posted link and it's definitely very clear that it was a joke;-) (as if nobody else posted that already!).
I'm being careful with anything I read today. I don't know whether to believe it or not. I haven't read the white paper yet. Maybe that would shed some light;-).
First of all, where are the files you're including? By the way, you only need one (stdio.h if you're programming in C). Second, why is x global? Third, you forgot a return statement. Forth, your style is horrible.
And that's only what I've noticed in the 5 seconds I looked at it.
"You mean "as opposed to the warm and healthy TV-education kids have been raised by in the past 15 years" ? At least this robot might create the opportunity to go play outside.
Stop seeing everything so negative"
TV shows did not raise me. My mother did. TV shows were simply a form of entertainment and in no way a replacement for time spent with a human.
Call it being "negative" if you want, but I think your naive. Besides, a Microsoft robot? Come on!
I still don't understand why Linux isn't categorized as Unix. Is it a license issue?
In the beginning, I can remember all the Unix guys degrading Linux. At the time Linux was probably missing a lot of what the large products had to offer. Now days, Linux feels pretty much like my old Unix boxes; but with BASH as my primary shell.
"I think the absence of any mention here is a clear indicator that it's dying."
FreeBSD has recently grown in popularity. They just released their new kernel and things are still looking good for them. I've finally become accustomed to Gentoo's portage enough that I prefer it over FreeBSD's ports; but ports still has some very powerful features that make it the choice of many.
After taco's previous post, I don't know what to believe. Not that I don't somewhat agree if it is real, but taco boy should be banned for life after calling wolf like that.
Switch to grub.
It's got the great advantage of being able to boot any kernel you have, as long as it can access the partition. Screwed up configuration, kernel with a bad filename, etc, all don't matter when you can load any kernel you want from grub's command line.
LILO can boot any kernel on your system.
Actually, we did read it; and it's a moot point as he is comparing an Linux entire distrubtion (kernel + ALL software packages) to only the Windows operating system.
This guy is showing just how stupid or ignorant he is. He failed to point out the most important fact of the entire study --he's counting only OS updates for Windows yet couting everythig patched for Linux. I can remember one or two security updates to the linux kernel last year. I say compare apples to apples next time or don't bother talking.
The only complaint I have thus far is that I believe they should seperate the fields a bit more for address, city, state, zip, etc. It's not really too bad because it did parse my input correctly. It's just confusing and I think it would look nicer if the fields were seperate.
It's just another way for the university to make money. Seriously, if they have to go to school to learn how to write this software, they aren't a danger to us, anyhow.

Hehe, you really read that? I saw the date at the top of the white paper and knew what it was.
Would you mind summarizing for the people that don't have/want an account?
Are there going to be any serious posts today?

Dang it! Please tell me I didn't fall for an April Fools joke!
#include

Is this going to look bad to companies considering open source products? I can see a lot of FUD being generated as a result.
What do you all think?
Sorry to makek fun of some the regulars, but every D&D player I've ever met is weird. I don't even want to work with them.
Linus = JK Bafford (inside joke)

It's revenue, NOT uptime.
"What about *BSD?"

How ironic is that a London Nuke Plant Lost 30 Kilos of Plutonium just prior to this story? That's weird.
Usenet is huge. Why do people keep saying it's dead. If anything, I've seen an increase in the newsgroups I frequent.
Personallyl, I still prefer LILO over grub any day of the week. Of course, it's quite possible that I'm just stuck in my old ways ;-).

No, when counting Microsoft products, they're seperate. When counting open source software, together.
