I used to use GAIM, but now I greetly prefer meebo ( http://www.meebo.com/ ), an IM embedded in your browser (with AJAX). But no files transfer, nor video or audio! But freakly useful!
Don't worry though, this event should be a lesson to all.
??? Why? It is clear that it wouldn't work 'out of the box'!
On the bright side, I'm sure someone will hack the installer "correctly" if it is at all possible.
Yes, but in order to do so, it is necessary to start "playing with the fire"!
Too late ^^ However, your trick has worked. IE7 has installed itself on the system, asked me to reboot; I did it, but then things started to go wrong.
It had a problem with IEDKCS32.DLL during the post reboot install. Now, explorer.exe crashes in shlwapi.dll, and more mysteriously, when I run iexplore.exe, a message box appears and tell me that iexplore.exe is not a valid win32 application...
So I sum up: no more IE (don't care, use seamonkey), but no more desktop also (for now?)... which is more embarassing!
Tried to hack the installer (update.inf file, to be correct) in order to install it on Win2k.
The process starts, but ends saying that the cryptographic services isn't running... Does someone has an idea to bypass this?
The logic here is that Microsoft is thinking that every one will upgrade each time to the latest brand new OS. The high number of computers still running Win98 shows that this kind of thinking is wrong. By adding ads in an OS, if the computer isn't upgraded, the OS will/still/ brings incomes to Microsoft.
Futhermore, if the OS is free, people will be more willing to upgrade and so the argument 'Linux has no cost' will fall off. It is a way to have money *and* market share.
Just a though, but I agree, I don't think something like that will happen in a near futur.
As an MS employee, the data on our speed of patch delivery is pretty upsetting (...) Sorry about that, everyone:)

I'm thinking that within 10-20 years, the RIAA companies will either be defunct or will have gotten out of the business or will be healthy because of biased laws and active lobbying.
not really. Let's say you are a spammer; you need a lot of mails accounts. If you need to pay just a little per account, this will be less interesting for you and so gmails accounts can stay clean. (It has the same goal as the invitations gmail used to use)
Yes, but before, all the interesting features where there when you bought the console!! (ie playing games... I agree now we can ask more)
More over, once you started this kind of circle (new features->new bugs->update firmware, which includes new features->new bugs->update...) it's not a good thing, for you customers(you need to update a lot, sometimes losing your data or your habits) and for the company: it shows that the software department isn't able to cope with what they are asked (functionnal and bugless products).
wxWidgets ( http://www.wxwidgets.org/ ) is also a very good API, and has a license which is better than the QT one (at least, it doesn't cost anything). wxWidgets is, as they said, "a cross-platform native UI framework".
I do prefer it. The code can be ported to MacOSX, Windows, and *nix (using GTK or Motif).
"Developers should ensure that their sites are ready for the IE 7 user agent string and treat IE 7 just like they would IE 6,"
I hope not. IE6 is not totally standard compliant, I would be more pleased if they ask web developers to treat IE 7 just like they would Firefox or Konqueror (at least for HTML, CSS and Javascript...).
or is it useless??? What if I dislike the music played by the car in front of me? OK I can turn off the system. And because I am afraid of listening to bad music, I will keep it down! Or did I miss something?
(I am angry because the car in front of me doesn't move in traffic jam, now I will be angrier because its driver has bad taste..)
I agree in a way, but I think you should see that sometimes, you can't do (or think) different: try to replace the wheels of your car by something else. I bet it won't go faster, because the wheel shape is the best for what it is intended to do.
And so is the case of a text editor: you will always have a place where to put your text, etc... Of course, some softs will try to challenge this and will provide new ways of doing this, and I bet there are more OSS taking "risks" than commercial applications.
You can say that about softwares, but this includes also kernels (which is a software of course).
They should do that! At least, if they are not able to have better functionnalities than KDE, they can claim they have a bigger revision number!:p

IMHO, the firmware should be as stable as rock.
What I find strange is that the submitter of the news ( vd ) has a nickname very close to the name of the author (Varun Dubey)...
Isn't this article a way for him to have a lot of hits?
