You joke, but many years ago when I used to do Apple support I had a customer bring in a PowerBook 1X0 for warranty repairs. You see the big grey brick on the end of the power cord was inconvenient so they cut it off and wired up a standard 3 pin plug. An Australian 240v AC 3 pin plug. The next time they plugged the laptop in it made a bang noise and stopped working...

Yes, the brick was a step down transformer. Yes, they were told in no uncertain terms that be destroying the provided power adaptor they breached the terms of the warranty.

Apple's computers have come with bundled software since... um... I'm pretty sure my LC II had bundled productivity software. Certainly since the Centris range onwards and anything with a CD-ROM drive used to come with a bunch of educational CDs too.

The point being, they've bundled *useful* productivity software for many years before the release of Win7.

Unless you have a really odd failure state (intermittent faults suck), they should have a good idea of what the problem is. One of the more common video failure states in the older mac laptops [1] were daughterboard related, and sometimes PRAM battery related and were relatively cheap to fix out of warranty.

Besides which, I've been on LJ for something like 12 years or more. While it is getting a bit like 'would the last person out please turn off the lights', I don't feel the need to migrate to a new social network yet.

Back when I use to work in a repair workshop, there were certain faults for which percussive maintenance was in fact the recommended option.

Certain monitor repairs required a thwack at just the right spot to get things working again. Slapping a hard drive on a flat surface could get a stuck platter moving again (a last resort, single shot solution), and some mechanical faults in printer required a slap to clear the fault (usually something stuck in the gearing that needed to be dislodged).

I'd like to stress these were uncommon issues, and generally you tread lightly and have a soft touch with hardware, but on the occasions where it was needed, it was often particularly satisfying.

I think the only time I've ever got a book wet was when one of my cats who was walking along the edge of the bathtub slipped and fell in, splashing water everywhere in her frenzy to get out.

To record a 1hr program you generally had to set the VCR up to tape from 30 minutes before the advertised start time to 30+ minutes after. If it was advertised to appear immediately after a major sporting event, double the contingency window.

    I'm a leftie too.

I was born in a city and moved to a small country town around the age of 8 by which time I was already writing with some fluency.

My 3rd grade teach was adamant that left handed writing was wrong and tried to make me write right handed.

As a result, I am slightly ambidextrous. Though I found that learning piano and using a computer with the mouse on my right side has further enhanced the tendency to use either hand for various tasks. I still prefer to write with my left hand though, and cant use a spoon and cake fork at the same time to save myself (as I use both forks and spoons in my left hand).

If all you want is sex, go pay a prostitute. In the long run it's probably cheaper and a whole lot less fuss.

Rape is generally about one person saying their will has absolute priority over that of another. The difference between rape and say rough sex is consent. It is denying the ability of one party to say no, whether through force, deception, drugs or simply the maturity to understand the implications.

    It's all about power.
