I go down to Speaker's Corner I'm thunderstruck
They got free speech, tourists, police in trucks
Two men say they're Jesus one of them must be wrong
There's a protest singer singing a protest song - he says
'they wanna have a war to keep us on our knees
They wanna have a war to keep their factories
They wanna have a war to stop us buying Japanese
They wanna have a war to stop Industrial Disease
They're pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind
They wanna sap your energy incarcerate your mind
They give you Rule Brittania, gassy beer, page three
Two weeks in Espana and Sunday striptease'
Meanwhile the first Jesus says 'I'd cure it soon
Abolish monday mornings and friday afternoons'
The other one's on a hunger strike he's dying by degrees
How come Jesus gets Industrial Disease
Every person at an organisation should provide value and make a positive impact on the company, but that doesn't mean that their absence should bring the place to a standstill. It's called succession planning, you should always have a plan for if any mission critical staff get hit by a buss, have a heart attack or simply win the lotto and decide to quit. This might be having all procedures well documented, status reporting so that someone else knows what is being worked on or training and job shadowing.
It's 2 years since Steve Jobs passed away, Apple hasn't crumbled yet. Partly due to succession planning, he at least knew it was coming.
In Australia, typically notice periods are specified in your contract and often are aligned to your pay cycle. I've worked for organisations with 2 week and 1 month notice periods.
If the employer decides that they want you to leave sooner than the contracted notice period they generally have to still pay you for that period - in lieu of salary (it's sometimes referred to as garden leave).
In addition to this, any unused annual leave time must be paid out. Sick leave is not paid out. Long service leave is paid out pro-rata for periods of service greater than 7 years (however you can't use Long Service leave until 10+ years with the organisation).
If you are made redundant, there is usually additional terms of an addition X number of weeks pay per year or part there of service. For a long time employee this can add up to quite a bit, and may be capped in your contract to an upper limit.
The biggest payout I've received from over half a dozen redundancies was nearly 9 months salary. It certainly softened the blow of losing the job quite a bit. And I've stayed on good terms with the guys from that job, I've ended up working with people from there at several jobs since.
I was talking to my husband on the way to work yesterday that we aren't that far away from 2020, as in CyberPunk 2020. I wrote a con module over 10 years ago called Wimbledon 2031 using the UK Sourcebook, it's not that far away from me dusting it off and offering to run it again in 2031. It will be interesting to see how much of the tech in the game (and the environmental disasters) has become reality.
Now trying to work out how I would get a permit for one of those. Somehow I don't think it would fit through the existing cat flap to access the litter box though.
The ink costs on these would make them prohibitively expensive to run - you'd go through a cart a day. And these little portable printers do not like environmental contaminants like dust, which block the nozzles in a hurry - which means more printheads/cartridges tossed and wasted.
The important bit is how you store the paper and ribbons - you want them to be kept as dry as possible, try not to open paper until you actually need it and keep unused stock in sealed cartons or packets. Damp paper tends to misfeed a lot.
I used to do client printer audits for Xerox and have seen printers operating in some extremely harsh environments (such as smelting plants). If you can find and get working (driver support) an old HP LaserWriter 4/4m/4+/4m+ those old dinosaurs just keep on keeping on. They had steel frames that were vibration/drop resistant and over engineered mechanisms that never seemed to wear our or get clogged by dust.
I'm not going to judge why in the early 80's it seemed like a good idea to take a new born camping. But since then there have been reports of dingos taking children in other situations, such as on Frasier Island from a resort hotel where the balcony door had been left open.
What if she's just slut who was out fucking when she should have been working?
Well that escalated quickly. Where the hell did that come from? If she's not doing it on work time - it's none of your business. If she is doing it on work time - beyond 'she wasn't actually sick' it's still none of your business. Chances are if it was a guy who'd blown off work because he'd picked up you'd be congratulating the bro.
however I kept nagging stating I wanted to publish within a few hours
Has this guy ever worked for a large corporation? They can't decide they need to take a dump within a few hours let alone anything requiring thought and consideration.
Anticipating a WOOSH, but Xerox haven't made 'Copiers' for a long time now. They make Multi Function Devices (MFDs), so by very definition, they have more than one job.
More likely she's trying to get her reputation restored. Though in my experience, filing wrongful termination suits make you less employable rather than more employable in the long term.
While the cited article says they will be receiving a higher Superannuation contribution from their employer (and this is frequently calculated as part of the total package when quoting salary), no where does it say that their take home salary is being increased. On average, women are still paid less if in the same role doing the same tasks as a man, therefore it is highly probable that even including the bump in Super, these women are still receiving the same or less than their male counterparts.
The only real alternative I see is to hide the form behind a login, which in the end is more inconvenient for the end user than a user friendly captcha.
That's the catch though, "user friendly captcha"s. Most of the time I encounter them I need to generate at least 4 of them before I encounter one I can actually read. And my eye sight is reasonably good.
That's before you take into account visually impaired users who are trying to do it from an audio queue.
Unless they were actually Toads.
Which gives a whole new meaning to the play Much Ado About Nothing.

Recent studies have shown that shaming obese people leads to greater weight gain, not weight loss.

That's OK, MySpace will take care of that for you. Or for the deluxe special, we could bring back Geocities.
All that organisational knowledge going out the door every 3-4 years? Awesome for efficiency and productivity I'm sure.
You had better hope you are never dependent on services provided by a government for anything critical.

Otherwise a dot matrix printer is pretty durable.

I have formerly worked for FXA as an analyst and can confirm that most digital copiers now "scan and print" when they "copy".

Surprise and fear
... and ruthless efficiency
I prefer Solid Rock.
I paid extra to get a 40Mb HDA put in my first Mac in 1990. The first computers I used had no HDAs and you used 400k floppy disks for most stuff.
Congratulations are in order, but I'm sure people will still keep using it :|
Bonus points for the emoticon.
