Class rooms are broken. Fix them and you will find more student engagement, which will improve the teachers' morale, which will result in a better education.

I'm curious, as a former teacher, what would be your top 5 initiatives which would fix broken classrooms?

I'm not asking to put you on the spot, but rather to get a better understanding of what you think we should be doing.

As stated by another poster - I currently have no horse in this race, my partner and I are unable to have children, though I have nephews who will pass through the school system, neither are we teachers or Californian. But I am interested in what will result in a better educated population in the long run.

We're renovating at the moment, and will be installing a couple of downlights (approx 10W LEDs) over where the BBQ will be located. On a separate set of switches we are putting another set of positionable downlights (some with dimmers) under the pergola. It means we should be able to control how much light we get around the terrace depending on whether it's just us chilling out, sitting out having a meal with a larger number of guests or having a party.

The other option we are investigating is chaining some colour changing LED lighting strips through the strip drain that runs around the entire perimeter of the terrace (about 7 x 7 meters). We've seen some that allow you to change colour by remote control. Likely to be expensive, but potentially awesome.

Ben Elton is perhaps better known in Commonwealth countries as a TV comedian, but he writes a fine line of satire which frequently swerves into the SciFi realm and is almost always a form of social commentary.

Blind Faith is an interesting posit on where the current obsession with social media, coupled with government surveillance and the slide away from science to religion could do to a slightly futuristic society.

Well worth a read, and if you enjoy that, you may enjoy some of his older works, such as Stark, This Other Eden, or some of his more recent stuff (there's dozens).
