If Nessus, as they pointed out, has recieved little or no outside contributions, then they still maintain the copyright to their code. They can do with it as they choose. If they wish to release new versions of their software sans GPL, then that is their choice. Neither you nor I could do that since we don't own the copyright.

This software was written in the 80s. Back then, all the programmers were supposed to have supernatural abilities and could, like, fit an entire operating system in 640K! What is this??!!! A modern JVM download is only 15MB.

Did I miss something? What is the motive for all this greediness? Are the record labels losing money? Are they about to go out of business?
If they keep up this behavior, its only a matter of time before Apple starts dealing with the artists directly. Why not?

Now Google, some believe, has a chance to rattle Microsoft by providing a cheaper, easier-to-use alternative.

    What alternative?

I fail to see how Google and Microsoft's core products compete. Google's profit model depends on targeted adds and data mining for market trends; everything else is a loss-leader. Microsoft derives nearly all of its revenue from Windows and Office; nearly everything else is a loss-leader.

Again, how does Google's success bite into Microsoft's profit margin? The web as a platform has its place. However, until my DSL connection is as fast as the bus speed between my CPU and memory, no web app will replace my operating system.
