Actually, it is directly the fault of Microsoft. Why they would design an OS that requires/allows third party developers to insert/replace files/directorys in the operating system itself is beyond me. Application files should be separated from operating system files. I should be able to remove an app completely by deleting the directory it is in. I should not have to worry about a buttload of orphaned or modified DLLs being left behind in my fricking system folder.
Then there is that fucking disaster they call the registry.
I would lay odds that he is an accountant. I've seen far too many beancounters in my time who think that learning to use some arcane text based accounting system makes them some sort of computer guru.
I've had many a beancounter tell me they "know how to program a computer" which on further investigation turns out to mean "I can put =sum(A1:C1) into Excel"
No, actually you dont need a long antenna, you can use a loop antenna which can be made quite small. I had a portable am-fm radio that was the size of a matchbook 15 years ago. It can be done, it's just that the target demographic for DAPs is teens thru twentysomethings and this age group has no interest in AM hence they don't build them.
Actually, I agree with that, I would use my ipod to listen to sports occasionally. Unfortunately for us, I have never heard of an DAP that offers AM, it's just so seventies I suppose.
If you are gonna use Google in an attempt to sound knowledgable on a subject you know nothing about son, you should pay more attention to what you are reading. Prunes? Surely you mean purine, which is found in many types of food and is a major contributor to gout.
The following is a more complete list of purine rich foods:
* Organ meats such as liver, kidney, heart, brain, etc.
* Selected fish and shellfish ie. ikan bilis, sardines, mackerel (including selar,
tenggiri & kembong), herring, salmon, fish roe, cockles and mussels
* Meat & yeast extracts such as Bovril, Marmite, Vegemite, essence of chicken, brewer's
and baker's yeast
* Meat soups & stock cubes especially Bak Kut Teh
* Game meat ie. venison, black chicken, pigeon, goose, etc.
* Beans & lentils such as tofu, soya bean, bean fillings, etc.
* Selected vegetables ie. spinach, rhubarb, asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms & peas
* Strawberry, strawberry jam, durian, tomato & tomato products
1) Does anybody really care about radio reception much at all beyond the pre-teen set? (*Many* existing players have FM radio and it has made no difference to their sales.)
Netscape - A single product company (web server + browser) driven into the dirt because MS gave away a competing product free with windows.
WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3 - both companies foolishly refused to provide Windows versions of their products, meanwhile MS made equivalent products that did support Windows, ultimately bundling them together as Office.
These scenarios are not even remotely analogous to ipod vs Zune unless you are suggesting that Microsoft are going to resort to giving Zunes away for free in breakfast cereal boxes. Even then I very much doubt people would start using them.
I wholeheartedly agree. My entire collection is in MP3. Granted I'm an aging male now, so my hearing is probably not 100% anymore but for christ sake, even if WMA/AAC *were* slightly better sounding at the same bitrate who the hell cares? When I'm driving in my car I cant hear the difference. When I'm grunting and sweating at the gym and trying to drown out the "chick radio" they have there I cant hear a difference. When I'm sitting in a room full of buzzing PC's I cant hear the difference.
Who the hell cares?
What I do care about is being able to listen to my stuff on my car MP3 player or my ipod, or my linux box, or my portable DVD player. What I do care about is that I won't accidently find myself in a vendor created dead end like the grandpaernt poster who has spent the last year trustingly sucking on the Microsoft teat with WMA only to have Microsoft change their minds because they think they can make even more money by making their vendor lockin even more restrictive on their latest product.
Another failed slashdot automotive analogy. The distinction between DRM schemes is entirely artificial. It as in no way analogous to fuel types and the engines that run them.
There are valid performance related reasons to produce diesel enines as opposed to petrol (gasoline). The same does not apply to music players and drm. For one thing, the engine manufacturers do not get licence fees from the sale of fuel.
"How about actuallly focusing on users and existing products for once?"
Because the writing is on the wall. Their OS cashcow won't live forever and they know it. They need a new source of revenue already up and running at the time that the Windows cow dies. It's that simple.
Gout is caused by an excessive buildup of uretic (sp?) acid which is generally caused by excessive consumption of tomatoes. The only episode of gout I had was caused by a sudden fad I embarked on that involved drinking large amounts of V8 vegetable juice for breakfast. As soon as I stopped doing that it went away and hasnt returned since.
The problem is it is AFAIK impossible to encumber the file you put on your customers USB stick with the requisite DRM restrictions necessary to keep the movie studios happy. I dont think you will see Blockbuster being allowed to do this at all.
What you WILL see is Steve Jobs positioning the ipod as the portable movie device of choice and I wouldn't be surprised at all if you found "ipod rental kiosks" in Blockbuster stores where you place your ipod into the dock and it downloads DRM controlled movies onto it.
Jobs is already on the verge of joining the Disney board which will mark the first step towards this goal.
No, the point being made was that "activation has already been cracked". The discussion was prompted by the news that Vista Ultimate won't be available in a Corp version, therefore your cunning plan to use a corporate key is utterly stupid.

and don't forget the enhanced rate of battery dissipation. The Zune is able to drain its battery much faster than an equivalent ipod.
Take that apple!
Mod: -1 Troll
hehe, nice one. I guess that's what happens when you give a monkey mod points eh?

Oops, no prunes.
An excellent point with only two minor flaws.
1) Does anybody really care about radio reception much at all beyond the pre-teen set? (*Many* existing players have FM radio and it has made no difference to their sales.)
2) Zunes Wi-Fi "feature" sucks, and sucks hard.
3) The Zune is _already_ done.
Oops, that was three, sorry, my bad.
You are crazy.

"They clearly state that they are paying up to prevent frivolous lawsuits."
Yes. Frivolous lawsuits bought against them by . . . . Microsoft.
But no, it's not a protection racket, no. Not at all.
I worked for a company that lost the support code for a voice codec once. This stuff really happens.

"Kidall mistakenly thought he had more time and a stronger position from which to bargain.
CP/M-86 arrived too late and cost much more than people were willing to pay."
Replace "Kidall"(sic) with "Gates" and "CPM/86" with "Vista" and we may have a case of history repeating itself.
I doubt Big Bill will end up drinking himself to death in a bar tho . . .

Uhh, yes he did.
He wrote;
"Meanwhile, the A300 was renamed (at the last moment) to the A600, and sold at the same price as the Amiga 500, which was abruptly dropped."
followed by
"A few months afterwards, the AGA machines were released."
Your reading comprehension problems are yours and yours alone.
"Perhaps you'd like to meet my friend, Mr 'Corporate Key'"
Er, but excuse me, corporate keys are for use on versions of XP that DON'T require activation.
that is much more impressive.
Is the seat leather upholstered or just some cheap material?
Congratulations
hehe
The difference between men and women.
A man will spend $2 on a $1 item which he needs, a woman will spend $1 on a $2 item which she doesn't need.
