I think we need to combine the forces of South Park and DVD Jon...the future Janus Jon, a.k.a. the chosen one to stop the advancing forces of evil. I wrote a song to cheer us all up for the upcoming battle.

(Melody: What Would Brian Boitano Do)

    What would DVD Jon do
If he was here right now,
    He'd make a plan
    And he'd follow through,
    That's what DVD Jon'd do.

When DVD Jon was in the cs lab,
    Cracking that hard code,
He broke two ciphers and a CSS tab,
    While wearing a blind fold.

When DVD Jon was in the alps,
    Fighting grizzly bears,
He used his magical fire breath,
    And saved the maidens fair.

So what would DVD Jon do
    If he were here today,
I'm sure he'd break a code or two,
    That's what DVD Jon'd do.

I want this V-chip out of me,
    It has stunted my vo-ca-bu-lar-y.

And I just want my president
    To stop fighting everyone

For Garcia I'll be an activist, too,
Cos that's what DVD Jon would do.

And what would DVD Jon do,
He'd call all the hackers in town,
And tell them to unite for true
That's what DVD Jon would do.

When DVD Jon travelled through time
    To the year 3010,
He fought the evil robot kings
and saved the human race again

And when DVD Jon built the pyramids,
    He beat up Kubela Kong.

Cos DVD Jon doesn't take shit from an-e-y-body

    So lets all get together,
And unite to save our rights
And we'll save RMS and Linus too,
Cos that's what DVD Jon do.

And we'll save RMS and Linus too,
Cos that's what DVD Jon dooooo,
    That's what DVD Jon do.

Yeah, I've just been made redundant so I have too much time on my hands these remaining days in the office. DVD Jon: Hvis du leser dette håper jeg du ikke tar det ille opp.

Scandinavian is a "language" that many Icelanders learn in school. It is sort of a hodge-podge mix of Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, using the words and accentuation that is the easiest for anyone from the three Scandinavian countries to understand. This way, they don't have to learn each of Swedish, Danish and Norwegian, but can get away with one "language". IANAI(celander), so, Icelanders, correct me if I got this all wrong.

I actually have to agree with the parent - the interview didn't focus on "fair rights", it focused on a very narrow point - particularly, playing DVDs under Linux.

Which is an example of how "fair rights" (whatever those are) are infringed by the very laws Mr. Valenti is advocating.

I agree, though, that this wasn't demonstrated as an example of copyright law (in this case the fair use portion thereof) being violated.

Ok...the vikings and others had shipburials. Due to the immense differences in practicality between:
    I) hauling a ship out of water onto land and into a pre-dug hole, and
II) hauling a ship out of water and thousands of meters up a mountainside, I'd assume most people here (moderators included) would consider the above post less than insightful.

Before anyone even considers the "What if it was built on-site, for this particular purpose?"-nonsense, it appears that this would be well above the tree-line, even in nice'n'hot Turkey, and it's not the sort of altitude that people would like to do hard work in.

To further debunk your middle-of-England analogy: The middle of England is never too far from navigable rivers. Viking ships had very shallow keels, allowing them to navigate many of them.

Furthermore, viking shipbuilding skills were wide-spread after conquests to the East, West and South. Any rich fuck could commision a few people knowledgeable in the art to chop down some lumber and make a boat on-site.

Your argument has no relevance to the matter at hand. Sorry if mine has a sort of neurotic twist to it...the coffee got to me hours ago.

What about different kinds of data? What if you're pasting multiple ranges from a spread sheet into text for instance?

In my experience, this is the one kind of thing that could, perhaps, make me appreciate windows. The ability to copy a row from, say, Excel, and paste it into an appointment in some undisclosed program ;), and the data still making sense. (I work in an environment with a lot of semi-repetitive tasks where this feature alone can save me a noticable bit of time every day).

Combine the ability to impose hyperabstract models intuitively onto the data and to sense/"see"/"touch" the data you're working on, and the GUI starts making sense over the command line. Yet the core GUI developers cannot foresee all types of data that will ever be displayed, and so they'll need to provide a model that's flexible, but inherently powerful, for application developers to use. Otherwise we'll all be stuck with the limitations of the GUI people's imaginations.

If this doesn't make sense, ignore it... I need more coffee this, oh-but-too-early morning.
