What launch window? Can B52's only fly 9 to 5 now? Does the autonomous drone punch a time clock and go home? Are they scared of bumping into all the other mach 10 aircraft wizzing around at 100,000 feet? wtf?
Really? How many wide spectrum (infra red, visual etc) live video feeds from his buddies and their sighting systems would an individual soldier find useful while getting ready to change position under fire?
your cell phone would still have reception
Well, yes. Almost any conductor will 'receive' radio waves.
The main problem with cellphones during a power outage is that they need to connect to a cellphone relay mast (those things they stick on buildings everywhere). Can anyone enlighten me as to how many of these have UPS and/or backup generators?
I have a PIII 600 200Mb ram which I use for software decoding digital tv (hauppauge nova t 90002 card) and writing the Mpeg2 to disk. It uses maybe 60% cpu resources max. Replaying the resultant (720x500 or something pixel) file uses 100% cpu.
I have been using M$ products from dos 3.3 to the present, and only in the last few years have I connected to the internerd. If the problem with M$ software was really all down to its ubiquity as a target for all the malware then you would expect that standalone pc's running M$ OS and apps would work fine. Not so. It has always been bug-filled, poorly designed and badly executed. Even the wordprocessing which has been through umpteen generations in still far from a quality product.
Erm. the last 3 phones I have had could do this I think. 7610, 6800 and an ericsson. I think it can only block ones it can see. Withheld numbers get through ( I may be wrong ). You can always set a 'muppets' ringtone so you know that a call is from someone you would prefer to ignore.
The new phones have a little OS in them so maybe you could delete all the junk you don't like. Or at least hide them.
I never use the organiser functions or the browser but it doesn't bother me thaat they are there.
Many people complain about battery life on phones, why not carry a spare if it is such a big deal?
You wanna swap? Crime here is rising fast, coincidentally you are not allowed a gun, mace or even pepper spray to defend yourself. Booby trap your house so a burglar breaks his leg? He will sue you and win. Meanwhile the government will prosecute you for infringing safety laws.
But surely it is safer with no guns? No. Drive-by shootings are getting quite common. Shootings of all kinds are common. Cops have guns, crooks have guns. You get to stand in the middle.
How's this for a solution to film piracy?
1. Make film (Citizen Kane: starring Adam Sandler or something).
2. Make a VCD cut and make blank label vcd's, using the economies of scale, sell these so cheap that the guys selling pirate vcd will buy from you rather than burn their own copies.
3. Sell the film as a download for the same price as you get for the vcd....wait a few weeks
4. Make a nicer, longer dvd cut of the film and sell this on no label media like the the vcd.
5. Sell the dvd cut online at the same price as the DVD wholesale price..... wait some more
6. Theatre release of film in lovely THX/35mm
7. Boxed set dvd release with extra everything.
8. Forget chasing 'pirates'
9. Profit!!!
By doing this you make money from the guys selling 'pirated copies' of films and money from people who can't be bothered to find a torrent of your film.
The money saved on lawyers and advertising would probabley pay for setting up the servers.
Since M$ was trying to get the lowest priced componenrts for their munged-pc game console, why aren't the drives standard ide, and standard usb ports? Is it really cheaper to order 1,000,000 slightly redesigned units than 1,000,000 of what is already falling off the end of the production line?
I am also doubtful that low spec components bring the retail price down from $500 to $150 as the crappy capacitors, random resistors and icky ICs still have to be bought and assembled into a unit. Surely the assembly and all the other costs are significant?

You are only a journalist if you are paid to report on people who are actually doing something.
A soldier: I am here to defend my country and people, even at the risk of my own life.
An opposing soldier: I also am here to defend my country and people, but they are different to that other guy's.
Civilian: I hope I don't get killed in the crossfire as I try to get the crops in.
Journalist: I get paid way more than any of you and if I get hit it is a big deal all over the world. Ha ha ha.
If I drive past a billboard that is next to some nude woman advertising soap then I woudn't notice the billboard. And I have to turn my stereo up when I am moving to drown out the noise of my broken exhaust.
Making a pc that does what most people need for $100 is possible, but first we need to have a fixed target to aim for. Let's say...
A gui interface.
Word processor
Spreadsheet
email
Doom II
web browser
that kind of thing.
Once we have our list of things that the pc should be able to do, then we can cram as many things onto one lump of silicon as possible and save oodles in the process.
Then for an operating system we can shop for the cheapest one that can deliver the goods(..hmm... should i go for XPeconomyEdition at $100 or Linux at $0, hmmm so difficult...).
I am unsure why microsoft would want users to stagnate their hardware since their apps become ever more bloated.
"Hey, loser, are you still spell checking on that $100 econobox? You could spell check on Longhorn and luxuriate in 256 trillion colour taskbars (hardware requirements: huge expensive everything, 1Gbit dedicated line to windows update)(disclaimer; your software may crash if you lose the 1Gbit connection to windows update for more than 30 seconds)"
Care to elaborate on the suppliers of this cheap stuff? I recently tried to buy an atx psu and was quoted >£20 by the comedians at the three nearest computer shops.
the author is James L. Halperin.
The 'documented life' in the book involves wearing a 24/7 audiovisual recorder with 360 degree vision. The data is notarised and stored off-site with encryption so only the owner can access it.
how many tests?
"well, it looks like a mouse, can produce heirs, ages the same as a normal mouse and doesn't grow and funny lumps so let's say the code we knocked out is junk"
Terrific. I bet the same logic will be used to fast track teleports as well "Yeah, it's not possible to store or transmit the entire state of all your atoms, but nearly all of it is junk so we make that up at the receiver. Cash in advance, please"
Yeah! That's what annoys me too! I wish i had read this before posting my sarcasm, but i had already launched into rant mode.
can I have some of their image enhancement software? That stuff rocks! Well done the producers for keeping it real.

is out of date. The military tend to alter the landscape as it goes along. I think an up to date minefield map would be useful.

.... is the DRM face recognition facility that deletes all your files if anyone else tries to watch.
How do you keep a windoze box running long enough to do any forensic work on it?
Bees are always busy. Busy bees. Hence they kept warm by working hard.
And by being all fuzzy.

Yeah, they are bound to be cheap, plentiful and in good condition, coming from crashed motorcycles.

if they want software?

how about an 'ordinary' cpu and another core that was good at floating point operations?
Council provided refuse sacks in the UK have been thinner than this for years.
