hmm, i have a directory for Starcraft that has followed across multiple installs and different boxes in my house, it has all the files needed to play multiplayer AND the campaign (original and BW), the only thing special i have to do is run a registry crack, otherwise the no-cd executable works just fine without ANY info from a CD.
IIRC, the install.exe is in the dir and the reg hack just takes the current path for starcraft and adds it as the CD path in the registry. then you use a loader to play.
and yes i still play it now and again.. can't wait for SC2 woot.
Hmm, let me see, *rummages through bag* i have a smug sense of self satisfaction.. want that? Oh wait we already promised that to the apple users... hmmm *looks some more* how about a fluffy penguin?
"What's up with Dr. Paul wanting to abolish all federal laws anyways?"
It was always the idea of the founders for federal government to have as little an influence as possible over state matters, i would rather be able to make a law in my state that fits what my state requires than be under the thumb of a federal system that does not truly represent me. Wouldn't you?
That way the power would be (more so) in the hands of the people.
don't get out of your car and attempt to pick anything up, unless of course, you're "into" that kind of stuff (not that there is anything wrong with that).
"I'm talking about the ones where the amount of piracy determines whether of not the movie reaches its break-even point. "
Really? Which movie would that be?
First your point was "think of the key grips!!!", then it was "piracy stops investment in new media!!!" now it's "somewhere in between blockbusters and flops!!", the only consistent point i see is that studios aren't making enough money, period, we should make anyone who has seen a movie pay for it in some way. (remind anyone of the MPAA?)
"but you know that even if 10% of the pirates paid for the movie then that could make or break a movies profitability."
Sounds like a great idea!! so many people obviously want to be able to download a full length movie on it's release date you would think they would find some way to tap into that market, i'm sure the 10% of overall "pirates" wouldn't have a problem paying for movies this way.
you know what also helps a movie's profitability? being a good movie. napoleon dynamite made tons of cash on a very small budget, very profitable in fact. are you saying this movie wasn't pirated or that it doesn't matter because it was a good movie?
"are you under 30?" nope. If you find it insulting to be called an industry shill then maybe you should be honest in it's debate and not reiterate every bullet point the MPPA has made?
i see, that would be easier than a hardware firewall (which i have) but software firewalls are pointless anyway. I agree steam is a good product and does a hell of a lot better than other DRM schemes, this is one of the things that pisses me off tho so i choose to bitch and moan until something is done;)
"PAs get paid from the upfront money that the investors put into the production."
right, so they got paid.
"The reason why the investors put money into the production is that they think they'll make a profit."
and some do and some don't
"that profit comes from revenue that the movie generates, be it from ticket sales, rentals, ad placement, etc."
And some movies completely Bomb, are you now blaming the public for not "supporting the little guy" because they don't watch every movie made? I surely hope not because that would be ludicrous.
"You downloading their movie and enjoying it without paying for it harms that revenue."
If I NEVER was going to PAY for the priviledge then how does it harm revenue?
"If enough revenue is taken away from the investors then the next time a movie is trying to get made the money-men may not be as enthusiastic about putting their dollars in."
Like i said, if it is a gamble none the less, my downloading a movie i would never watch in a theater, buy or Rent does NOTHING to that "revenue stream" and thusly does not "harm production assistants".
"If your attitude is 'tough fucking shit, the world needs to be more equal and they're too rich anyway and incomes need to be more even' then there is a nice slice of humble pie coming your way because that will never happen. People don't want to be equal, comrade. I certainly wouldn't want to be as bitter as you, for example."
No my response was to your blatantly obvious heart string pulling so people would "think of the ____" instead of the real issue, the true value or loss of someone downloading a movie/song/whatever.
SO... be honest, do you work for the studios or just get paid to shill out their propaganda?
"This is a real problem, though it should be noted that this doesn't happen after a game is signed to play offline."
I'm sorry this got modded informative because it is not true, i have played pretty much all of my games in offline mode, but none of that is relevant if steam won't even start because it is asking you to authenticate.
"there's an easy solution to that problem: use your firewall to block it!"
that's not an easy solution, blocking and unblocking ports for an application is a PITA, an easy solution is to allow steam to ALWAYS allow offline mode regardless.
the other day i couldn't play online or off and many others had the same problem because the clientregistry.blob was corrupted. this was not my fault, steam did something wrong, but yet i could even play in offline mode (I have 20 games under steam currently) while waiting for some resolution in the forums.
"trumps some production-assistants need to eat and pay their bills."
I didn't know production assistants got paid from royalties or box office receipts, i was under the (apparently false) assumption they were paid for their work while they worked.
Thanks for the insight into how movie production really works./sarcasm
What confuses me is how all of these movie production companies are still raking in Millions of dollars in profit if piracy is so rampant? Box office receipts alone show that they are, not to mention the money made in DVD sales and rentals.
Oh, they aren't making "enough" money... i see, that makes me really feel for them then.
"Unfortunately where I am it seems that Verizon FiOS is filtering out port 80....why is Verizon offering me 15up/15down service and then telling me "absolutely no servers"? "
I'd be pleased as punch to have webservers blocked, you can get an online webserver for dirt cheap (5-10$ a yr for under 1-2gb of transfer per month is the norm in my area?) and then just link to your content on a home server.
what i would use it for are gaming servers, bandwidth is still expensive and combined with renting rackspace and such makes it unaffordable (like 100+ a month to host a 12 person server), but i could host a couple of game servers on spare cores i already have running at my house, and since most game servers use a central tracker i could use any port i want above the 8000(?) range.
"You can't get it in San Francisco or Marin either."
Or San Jose, i've been trying for the last 2 years or so to get anything above 768 upstream for residential in SJ and have been out of luck unless i want to pay 300/mnth and then i think the highest i've found is 1.5 up for "business" (not available for residential)
"Likewise, people doing research in genetic engineering, particularly with totally novel life forms, need to ask themselves "what could possibly go wrong,"......it makes sense to prevent or mitigate the risks."
Don't worry there are already plans in place, we will cordon off the city and a small nuclear device will be detonated, the media spin will be "catastrophe at nuclear plant obliterates racoon city".
Looks like this is still a guess, what do people do who have their appendix removed? why there and not higher up the small intestine (like halfway along the whole digestive tract rather than at the end 1/5?
even the article you reference says "apparent" which means "what we think so far".
"Humans are a group animal. Autistic individuals are kinda like a fuel injector - they can greatly increase efficiency while you can make a car work without them and they are useless by themselves."
Maybe in "slight" cases of autism (or idiot savants), but most cases are severe enough to make the opposite true, my wife works as a teacher's aide for the mentally handicapped children in her school district so i have seen first hand the spectrum of mental disabilities, if left alone these children wouldn't make it, if anything they are a hindrance to the "group" (think lions and antelope).
I agree there might be some benefit in a group system (like humans) but to think that genes know or care about those factors when mutating to create new subspecies would be silly.
"Lets see, one is the bastard offspring of Judaism, and the other is the bastard offspring of Judaism... no, no, you're right, they are totally unlike each other. No similarity at all."

"What authority decides who is a true Christian and who isn't?"
Jesus.
"At what point do we start judging the tree by the fruit that it bear ?"
you will know a tree by the fruit it bears, you will be judged with the same judgement you mete out. (SPOILER mercy triumphs over judgement)
i'm not sure what you are asking if this doesn't explain it? care to elaborate?
"that they which commit such things are worthy of death"
spiritual not physical.
we all have to die (mortal flesh)because of sin, but spiritually we can be reborn.
in the OT there was capital punishment for sin, in the NT there is not. (think testament = contract).
*hands penguin over* sorry about the bits of fluff and the tiny holes.. my dog is teething =/

"You're missing a significant issue. If paint flecks can get in, what else is getting in there?"
the summary explains paint flecks got ON the pills, not in them, when they covered the bins used to store the pills the problem went away.
"Do i win something?"
