This was about 17 years ago, and i believe i was asked, and did consent, but i was young and didn't know my rights (which i do now) so of course i consented.. it's kind of intimidating when you are handcuffed in the back of a cop car all of a sudden and being told you would be let go if he can search your car...
he came back a few times asking me where the drugs were hidden, each time i said I didn't know, and the third time he came back and told me how stupid i was for hiding the drugs "in that place".. I once again repeated firmly "I DON"T HAVE ANY DRUGS".
Police dog later, I was released and told it was a "favor" and I owed the cop "big time" for not hauling my ass downtown to be drug tested.
To be fair(?) the type of neighborhood I was in was known as a low income crime/drug problem area, and I was a middle class teenager who lived on the other side of town... but I had friends from school who lived there and was visiting before i went to work (had recently got a car that allowed me some freedom).
"have the leaked passwords reset by the account owners"
Yah they could have sent the owners an email asking then to verify their current usernames and passwords and maybe even provided a link to do so... Just make sure to tell them in the email that because of possible fraudulent use, they need to do this verification.
" I was hanging out with some dealers, but they never saw me using, buying, or selling any drugs."
Reminds me of the time i was pulled over, handcuffed, searched, and my car ripped apart looking for drugs because (as the cop said) "I was in the wrong part of town".
"Or more likely, they'd blame the drop in sales on piracy and direct their wholly-owned subsidiary members of Congress to push yet more ridiculous legislation through in support of their dying business model at the expense of the citizenry."
I think we finally found step 2, someone alert the gnomes.
I did, I seem to remember hiding behind a ramp and poking out to blast at the evil dudes.. it's been a while since I played it as it seemed boring the second time around..
"No religioun has ever given objective proof that their god does exist,"
But that's not true, Moses gave many (i think it was 10) objective proofs that his God did exist and was more powerful than the "God's" of Egypt. This is why the Pharoah let them leave... or do we not believe the combination of the bible and ancient hieroglyphs as "proof" enough that those things happened?
There are a lot of those types of "proofs" going back through the time of the bible even to current times...
"Somebody needs to offer a nice service where you can buy theatrical releases for $5, that become unplayable in 24 hours."
Or the option to pay a litte more (like 8 bucks) to "own a copy". I'd rather wait and pay 3 bucks to rent a movie than 5 bucks to see it once without the theater surrond sound and big screen.
I really don't understand the current model of make people wait or pay through the nose.. would people who wait for the DVD or to rent the movie NOT do these things if they could buy the DVD or rent the movie on the day of it's release? Or is it about artificial scarcity to try and drive up box office results?
No he's wrong, the PC port sucks ass, the graphics (for some reason) played like crap (on a Geforce4 compared to the Xbox's Geforce2), the mouse control was incredibly slow even with acceleration and set to level 10, this combined with the overall boring gameplay (why were all of the levels identical within a "chapter"?) made a truely craptasic game.
The multiplayer wasn't even that inspiring, Quake/Doom/UT style gamplay with crappy weapons (spray "cone" physics for an assault rifle?!?!?!), ugh...glad I didn't pay for that one.
"These clips are then being linked to by Gawker itself: 'Gawker.com, for example, on Thursday featured a YouTube clip from ABC's talk show The View. At the beginning of the video, there is an ad for Gawker."
If they are linking to the videos from the site that the ads are for, wouldn't people obviously already know about the site?!?
Sounds like maybe the problem isn't your mother-in-law, sounds like the problem is that you are a self absorbed, self important son in law.
Where did I say that I installed any of their freeware crap? Maybe that's what you assumed, but if you had cared enough to listen to what I was saying instead of rushing to tell me how stupid I was then maybe you would have gotten what I was saying...
When they merged with SBC, i used to have a pacbell.net login and email address but after the merger they wanted me to create a new yahoo ID to use instead.. i just ignored them for my main account, but for sub accounts i followed suit and was rewarded with a host of "free" applications that they wanted me to install to continue using their services (although direct setup of POP3 still works) and a new "improved" home page type "portal" that was full of obtrusive ads. UGH!
If I didn't game so much I might have looked into Comcast (which also makes me mad as there are only 2 options for DSL) but i value my low ping/lag.
"I had that problem years ago. I just learned to be ambidextrous while playing with my Wii and the forearms evened out."
How many years have you been playing the Wii???!? If you are playing the Wii enough to have muscle mass change in your forearms in the last 2 months it's ben out, you need to take that onscrren advice and "why not take a break, press the + key to pause the game"
My Idea was to put paddle wheels on all intake water mains for buildings, esp apartment complexes, with natural gravity providing the pressure (or just by the pressure of water mains) would be enough to provide enough force to power the wheels.. right?
You could also do this for outgoing water from bath/sink drains, toliets, etc.. as long as you put it on the part of pipes that lead straight down, and only part of the pipe (not block the whole pipe) then you would also get enough flow to do the job.
10 little power wheels should offset some of the power usage in a house.. wouldn't this work?
"Went past the company store on the way to work. The line was quite long. All MS employees. Looks like I'll have to wait a few days..."
But if you are an MS employee and you didn't show some kind of Vista support (like omg i'm installing it right now) wouldn't that look bad on you as an employee? Could these people be chalked up more to show than actually "needing" Vista?
I'm not trying to troll, just curious, from what I have read on the MS blogs it seems to be the case?
"Seriously, I won't use Vista until a) some app I want requires it "
Which is exactly why MS is providing DX10 on vista only, to cash in on the gamer market, first using the enthusiasts to buy the newest DX10 games, which will then drive more development of those games and less DX9 development, eventually to be able to play any "current" game wyou will need to be running Vista to use DX10.
Sucks because I always liked Opengl and it's not proprietary.
"The alternative is "rebalancing" the weaponry if it's determined that the M4 is too powerful for it's price."
But the whole point was that they are balanced, this is after 5 years of "balancing", changing the price just throws the whole dynamic off again. and because the price is always changing, there is no way to rely on what it is "worth", this now changes weekly depending on price. At least if there was a one time change to the damage, accuracy or whatever, everyone is on the same field again and will learn to adapt.
"Authentication is not required if you are on the same LAN as the server, the server is configured as LAN only, and if the internet access is off. Otherwise, there wouldn't be lan parties for Counterstrike in areas without Internet access."
This is my whole point, internet multiplayer games were killed off and the community divided with the closing of WON. Of course you can play on a LAN, but that does nothing for my casual gameplay.
"I am skeptical of your conclusions. It sounds quite possible that you were generally more consistent or strict than your wife and this could be the cause of the effect that you're seeing, rather than the spanking in particular."
As well you should be, not actually seeing it first hand, I always made sure to explain why they got spanked and the noticeable effect of the same behavior not being repeated spoke volumes. I was spanking them left and right willy nilly either, it was more of a last resort, as time progressed, there were "fewer and farther between" spanking episodes as i could just explain the eventual outcome of persistent disobedience would be a spanking. What I meant to say (or didn't clarify possibly) is that by 5 I didn't really need to spank them any more. all in all we are talking maybe 10-15 spankings over their lifetimes per child (if that). no bruising, no broken bones, just some well deserved humility.
"If your kids had continued with whatever was causing the spanking, would you keep up the spanking? How long? Do you spank a 12-year-old? A 16-year-old? I'd rather use techniques that the kids will get used to and will continue to work for a long time."
Well if a child is stubborn enough, eventually nothing is going to work, even spanking. Every child is different, so it would depend. I know some 12 year olds that i would love to spank (because they are consistently self centered little shits) and coincidentally enough they never were (spanked) by their parents. Once again, this is pretty much a last resort, they are still grounded for misbehaving as they have priviledges that mean something to them when they are taken away.
I recently got a dog from a breeder, surprisingly, training the dog reminded me a lot of raising kids, i had to establish my dominance in the household as alpha male and he quickly fell in line with the pecking order, i think it is the same way with kids in some respect, spanking them early on established this pecking order between myself and them, but it was never developed with my wife who they constantly ignore and walk all over... so now I don't have to establish who is the parent, they still respect this bond that was established early on.
My main point overall is the disgust of "outlawing" spanking and calling me an abusive parent, i find it offensive, probably as much as you find the thought of spanking your own child, but I would never try and force you to do so.
"I remember the spankings but I sure don't remember the lessons they were intended to teach. "
But you did understand there were consequences for misbehaving, and you did heed your parents after those times, right?
It doesn't have to be about a specific lesson, it is more about understanding limits, punishments and respecting authority. It doesn't have to be the first response either and in most cases shouldn't be...
In my house, when my kids were younger, eventually if they kept misbehaving they would be spanked by me, my wife would never spank them because she felt like you did. Both of our methods worked for the most part but when it came down to it I was the one who would finally spank them and they would behave. I haven't spanked any of my kids (I have 3) for at least 5-6 years now (longer for the older ones), i pretty much never had to after the age of 5 or so because they would just listen to me.
Flash forward to now, they don't listen (or in my estimate) respect my wife as an "authority" figure, no matter what she does, but they do respect me and do seem to be able to see me both as an authority figure AND someone who they can come to with problems for help.
"Physically striking anyone is abuse in my book. If you have an employee and he misbehaves can you hit him for punishment? "
If a protestor acts out they are most certainly "hit", if a criminal resists arrest they are most definitely "hit", if you verbally assualt someone on the street most likely you will also be "hit".
Spanking is a form of punishment that is actually in line with real world cause and effects that children will see once they are in a real world situation, shielding them from this does not prepare them for real consequences of their actions.
Spanking is not the be all end all of the range of punishments (just as in real life), but it does have it's place, and it can be used as a tool in parenting, to restrict parents from a range of options when trying to teach their children consequences of their actions and then expecting the parents to be responsible for those same actions of their children is ludicrous.
Of the reasons I still have a CRT television, and recommended this to my Mother who recently needed to purchase a new TV, the one she bought even has Digital tuner support so she won't have to upgrade.
With the new emergence of these different technologies I knew it would be a while before any of them matured enough to be worth the purchase price (to me anyways) as i expect to be able to use a commodity item (like a TV) for at least 10 years before needed to upgrade or replace...
