"You can practice whatever religion you like, and no law can be resricting religion. However, if the Flying Sphaggetti Monster tells me to go do something illegal I am not protected under freedom of religion"
You know you just stated a paradox right? How can there be no laws restricting the practicing of religion, but if you practice your religion you are breaking the law?
Look at it this way, mormon scripture says that Polygamy is OK, at one time it was also legal to practice polygamy, then a law was passed that said that polygamy was illegal.
Should mormons then be allowed to practice polygamy without legal repercussions?
Looking at the Constitution the answer is Yes, otherwise we could just basically (by passing laws that restrict actions that make the tenets of each religion) make all religions illegal.
Same thing with rastafarians, they can legally smoke marijuana when practicing their religon.
To truly have religous freedom, you cannot hold accountable people who are acting on faith that their religion requires them to act a certain way. If you believe in the constitution then this is what you must uphold.
SO along this line of thought... can we hold accountable those who would kill themselves as religous martyrs?
"You ONLY get one life...I'll struggle and fight and do about anything to preserve mine as long as possible. Hell, if you live, you can always have more kids....but, you only get one you."
I was told I get another me that will live forever after this life?
It is material if you're saying that's why it was written into the Bible. Especially since it doesn't make sense why this would be a Mosaic law if people of the time knew the dangers.
Why wouldn't there be laws governing swimming an hour after eating, or playing with tigers?
Obvious mortal dangers is not the reason for the religous laws, or is there something about Golden calfs that I don't know?
The laws were twofold, one to seperate "God's" people from everyone else (making a big public distinction since most if not all of the people of the time would eat pork, easy and cheap source of meat), and of course protection from things that might be considered "punishment from God" such as breathing ailments and food illnesses, back int he day lepers were considered blighted by God, so would be stubbing your toe, so making a distinction in these areas were important also.
It used to be dangerous to eat pork. The expedient solution was to incorporate a ban into religion."
You're saying people 2000 years ago knew the dangers of eating pork and that's why they "wrote" it into the scriptures?!?
How would they know the dangers of eating pork and shellfish 2000 years ago? you really think that they would have made the connection between parasitic worms and something they ate months before instead of attributing it to "God's" will?
I'd like to voice my opinion of a gamer who is very mainstream and controls the purchasing decisions for 2 toher young gamers in my household.
I will not buy games with ADs, leave my games alone, leave me the frick alone, and go somewhere else.
Can I have one Fricken place IN THIS WORLD where I can indulge in a pleasure and not intruded upon with ADs?!?!?!
I ALREADY PAID FOR THE GAME!!!
Hands off, for the love of all things good and pure, please stay away.. where does this shit end?!?
Leela: Didn't you have ads in the 20th century?
Fry: Well, sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio. And in magazines and movies and at ball games and on buses and milk cartons and T-shirts and written in the sky. But not in dreams. No, sir-ee!
"..play as a Russian commissar and shoot Russian soldiers for retreating, to play as a civilian in London during the Nazi Blitz and I have yet to use any vehicle that isn't stuck on rails and doesn't use arcade-ish physics."
Did you actually play Call Of Duty? You play as a russian with "commissars" forcing you to advanced against tanks while you hold a rifle or you ARE shot.
Then there is the mission where you are driving Russian Tanks through the woods with full control and realistic physics?!?
And not to mention the games where you CAN fight as a Nazi, do you actualy play the games you are complaining about?
I HAVE a 3 yr old Athlon 2800+ that used to run a geforce 4 as the video card, the total cost to build the box was less than 500 dollars at the time, i just recently upgraded to an Nvidia 6800 OC (by BFG tech) and for less than 250 my system now plays everygame on the market with all of the eye candy on max (I play 1024x768 with no aa or af) so I figure im set for a few more years before i'll need to upgrade anything else...
"They can make this argument to defendants: settle with me for a fraction of your total expected defense costs, and we're both better off (defendants save some defense costs, plaintiffs' lawyers grab some personal loot).'"
I wonder if Ken Kutaragi and the Iraq Minister of information went to the same school of marketing?
"not only will consumers be prepared to pay the cost but that the console is 'probably too cheap.'"
The next blurb I expect from Ken Kutaragi "The PS3 will change the way people think about games, it will rise up from among the lowly consoles and start a rampge acros the country, devoring the revolution as snack and then raping the Xboxs through their USB ports, people will watch in amazment at the PS3's feats of strengths and praise it for releasing them from the tyranny of boring consoles".
"I've never shot heroin into my cock, but I'm pretty sure that would be a Very Bad Idea."
See I think that is the parent's point, you have never tried H in your wee wee but yet you think it is a bad idea, in fact it might be a great idea and something you would love personally, but alas you will never know?
Actually the AI in WC3 doesn't spend all of it's resources immediately, often times it hordes a lot of resources but never spends them, this can be seen by wiping out their main set of people and unit structures but leaving the castle/town hall intact and peons alive, the computer will continue to gather resources but never build any supporting structures.
I think it's due to an AI routine that doesn't reset itself, once a barracks or whatever is built the computer no longer considers that building needed, so when you destroy it then leave their base it never rebuilds it.
I think what the internet user's are saying and what i'm saying is we've given the telcos and cable comapnies big tax breaks as incentives to make an investment, and I don't think the Telcos and cable companies should be coming and telling us how we can use our public spectrums, simple as that,' I said during a slashdot discussion about issues faced by consumers like myself, adding, 'Why don't they go and tell the radio companies what they should be charged for using the airwaves?'"
So it seems you are either a troll or once again misunderstood what I have written, let's see if we can figure out which it is...
"Propoganda is a loose term." propaganda Audio pronunciation of "propaganda" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (prp-gnd) n.
1. The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause.
2. Material disseminated by the advocates or opponents of a doctrine or cause: wartime propaganda.
Doesn't seem like a loose term at all...
"You disagree with Thompson, so his opinion is equal to that of a Nazi."
I never called Thompson a Nazi, I was explaining the parent's post (does anyone ever read the parent?) who was comparing Propaganda that Nazi's used with what Thompson does with his "News releases".
"Comparing him to a genocidal maniac borders on lying. You stretch the truth to the point where it is utterly obfuscated by hyperbole."
Once again I didn't compare him to Nazi's nor did I stretch the truth.
"So opinions we don't agree with is evil propoganda, and we're just good guys."
Actually when looking at the definition, what he does IS propaganda, when the information that is giving is purposely contorted using lies I would call that evil no matter what side of the arguement someone falls on...
"You want to compare him to a Nazi because you disagree with him. You use the very same tactic as the person you loathe."
Since I am not spreading false propaganda nor comparing him to Nazi's I don't see how you can call me relatively "bad". I agree with the parent as he is using the same false propaganda tactics that the Nazi's did (the parent made the observation, I happen to agree with it, notice the difference?), not because I disagree with him but because of what HE does... I'm not the one spreading lies as truth.
"The difference between the US government using cartoon characters to convince our children than all Germans and Japanese were evil is only different fron Nazi propoganda in that we agree with out side, and don't agree with the other side."
I would consider them both reprehensible, anytime someone or something spreads lies I am repulsed.
"One can argue that you are closer to the Nazi here, because you insinuate anyone who disagrees with you is the equivalent of a genocidal fuck."
Actually no, you got it wrong again, no one is saying jack thompson=nazi, they are saying (and i'd agree) that his method of "informing" the masses is akin to propaganda, the example given was jewish propaganda given by Nazi's and how jewish people chose to ingore it:
"And the Jews had every right to ignore the Nazi party in the early 1930s. Ignoring those who preach for the restriction of our civil liberties is every bit as damning as signing those civil liberties away yourself."
Let me restate the point, do not ingore propaganda, instead stand up to it and shine a light that will decry it for what it is, untruths used to sway opinions for one's personal agenda/vendetta.
Can you point to where I posted lies stated as fact thus being actual propaganda?
"No, it's not mind boggling. If your business partner told you to do something boneheaded, you'd have the cajones to stand up and say it was wrong, and not do it."

You could say the same thing about GTA 3.
There is animated blood, but does that grab an M automatically?
"The Nazi party was responsible for something like 30 million deaths. Thompson is responsible for angering soccer moms. The two do not make for a fair parallel."
If the parallel being made was how many people they each have killed then fine, the point being made was how the Nazi's and Jack Thompson both use/d progpaganda as a tactic to accomplish what tthey are trying to accomplish and why ignoring both groups proved and will prove to be a bad decision when trying to fight such propaganda.
