But.... what will we talk about then?? Star Wars isn't out yet, and Linus can't release a new kernel every few hours.
How about the latest Gentoo install disk?
A one time try is all that's needed for success

The Case for FreeBSD

· Score: 5, Interesting
I've been using Linux since around '96 something, first Redhat, then Slackware and recently Gentoo when I got my AMD64. I tried FreeBSD for the first time a few months ago when I had an old 200mhz machine that I just wanted to use for something, and since that seemed to work ok (a very basic install, no X or anything like that) I decided to give FreeBSD/AMD64 a try when I had to do a reinstallation due to hardware changes.
I downloaded a minimal boot CD, burned in, booted installed the base system over FTP and then X, KDE etc via ports...
After only a few hours I was totally confused. Everything just worked!! Well, almost everything. I had some problems with the soundcard, that was solved thanks to great documentation pointing me to a very logical solution.
I'm still a bit lightheaded. An operating system just can't be this good, I'm probably going to wake up soon.
I've used the 64-bit version since March or April something. Build 1069 had it's fair share of problems, but I've been running build 1218 for a while now, and it isn't much different from normal XP.
All hardware except for an old USB webcam works fine with the built in drivers (but I ofcourse downloaded and installed 64bit drivers from Nvidia for my FX5600). I use it quite a lot for gaming and remote access to manage porn-downloads from work (dualbooting FreeBSD for useful stuff). All in all, works fine.
SMB, the game I keep going back to again and again and again after more than... 16? years, sometimes slows down when there are a lot of things happening on the screens, like on the "open" levels such as 1-3.
Aaaargh! It's like this in the C= community too. When discussing the Commodore One (basically a new improved C64 designed by Jeri), 50% of the posts in comp.sys.cbm and the mailinglists is about that computer itself, the rest is Jeri this and Jeri that...
I can understand why there are so few females in the business, most of them probably gets overwhelmed by the attention they get because of their gender, and not their merits.
There's some funny examples of various copyright holders' cease-and-desist-mails (and the replies they got) to a Swedish torrent site on:

One they day will get a clue and start hunting down the users instead.
Yuck. I've just turned 30, and every day I think to myself (and say to others), "it was better in the old days". It really was. I despise today's teens and their total lack of respect for the older generation(s), I'm constantly depressed over the fact that people are playing Half Life 2 without ever having played through Last Ninja 2 and every summer I see more and more annoying tourists polluting my neighbourhood.
Also, why do they always have to play awful junk on the radio these days?
I really don't want to think about how depressed and cynical I would be in 970 years time.
As other have said above, so what? I use 2.91, I have the installation file in my backup directory and I see no reason to change, ever. I tried the later versions (3.x or 4.x or whatever it is) and decided right away that I do *not* need another bloated do-it-all-multimedia thing. I want an MP3/OGG player, 2.91 is great for that.
I wonder how come the parent was rated funny, it sounds like a quite common use for the C64 by someone who likes the machine but doesn't have a real die-hard attitute.
There are still a few thousand people who use this machine for various stuff (I'm one of them, I currently have 5 C64's in the living room and one C128 set up right here next to my AMD64(!) PC). Most demo coders seems to be located in Europe, while North American Commodore users for some reasons seems focused on using their Commies for "serious" things like accounting etc.
Huh?
I live in Europe, and I played the game from the beginning - got the box two days after the release IIRC. How is it not launched in Europe yet? The only thing is that we can't get the comic book thing that they offer in the US, but that's not really a big loss.
Slightly OT, but anyway: Who cares who many words a text is, why not give us the figure in bytes or kb instead? I have no idea how long a 2600 word text is (ok, I don't really need to know either, it's not *that* important), but 15 or 20kb ascii text would mean something.
How could this possibly affect commercial space flight in any way? There are other countries to launch from, and space is free for all (at least until the Borg are back).
I had a shot at the first post, but now I've been sitting here for five minutes, and I can't come to think of anything relevant, even less interesting, to say. And now I'll probably get modded as offtopic. Life sucks.
"10 out of 10 Terrorists agree - Anybody but Bush in 2004"
Huh? Not too long ago some Al Qaeda spokesperson in Lebanon issued a statement saying that they hoped he would win the election. He's simply giving them what they want - more angry civilians turning to fundamentalist organisations.
But anyway, I agree. If people don't care enough to know what's going on, then they shouldn't vote.
The operating systems link goes to encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com, which is a scam-site that steals articles from other sites, in this case from Wikipedia. The only thing they've added are ads.

I was going to write a reply in response to some of the comment above, some of them said something like that there's "no need for another OS. We already have the alternative - Linux!". Well, in some parts of the world we like to have more than just two alternatives to choose from! And I was also going to make the point that we *do* need more alternatives because an OS should be *great*, not slow and bloated like Windows, or decent but still slow and in some cases bloated like most Linux dists and the BSD's. Those of you who were once Amiga users know what I'm talking about.
Anyway, before rushing to the defence of Syllable, I thought it'd download it and install it on an PIII that I happen to have for spare, just to make sure I actually was going to have a point.
But wtf? No full installation available! You can download a live CD, download a "basic CD" download the disks... But to get the "Premium CD" (with sourcecode and all the goodies), you have to pay US$10.
Well, that's it for me, I'm not interested anymore. If I had been able to download the full installation and had liked it, then I would gladly have supported them with $10 (or $100 - just got my salary!), but this... No thank you. I guess Linux (and the BSD's) are THE alternative(s) for a good reason.
I've got 100Mb connection at home (yes, I'm Swedish). And sure, it's nice to be able to download a 700MB DivX-movie from my local DC++-hub (usually takes about 2-3 minutes), but that's the only I really make full use of my connection, since most people on kazaa or eDonkey has 10Mb or even slower connections.
I used lived in Australia a few years back when I was studying at the UWA, and IIRC (which I do), John Howard is an idiot. He's the only thing that's not amazingly great about that wonderful country. I guess all the positive things about Australia (the climate, the friendly people, the bizarre animals, Tim Tam, Cottesloe beach etc) has it's negative counterpart... concentrated to a single individual.
Right. Please dupe this article when the game is in the FreeBSD ports collection. Until then it's quite useless.
But.... what will we talk about then?? Star Wars isn't out yet, and Linus can't release a new kernel every few hours.

What's up with apple and German tanks? First the Panther (http://www.achtungpanzer.com/pz4.htm#panther) and now the Tiger (http://www.achtungpanzer.com/tigerp.htm). What's next, the Leopard? When apple releases Mac OS 1x.x Leopard II, then I'm buying a Macintosh!
