What a load of crap. I've had 10Mb full duplex for the last few months, and sure - I was quite happy with that. Do I really need more? No. Last week my ISP without any warning or notification decided to raise it to 100Mb. I'm not downloading (and seeding...) at around 9-11MB (yes, 11 MegaByte) per second. Do I need it? No. Do I want to go back to 10MB? No.
Also: "because the backbone is slowing everything down". Well, if the 6Mb is 6Mb only in theory, then it's not 6Mb, and the customers shouldn't pay for 6Mb. I understand that the situation is a bit different in the US than here (Sweden), but still - that sucks and is not acceptable.
Could someone please explain why this is news? Is the UK behind the rest of the developed world when it comes to communication? 3G phones/handhelds is nothing new, everybody (here, Sweden) has been using that for at least two years or so - and it's hard to find new phones/handhelds still using that other system, whatever-it-was-called.
...don't forget the C64. I still have the original tapes (+disk versions from Gamebase64, that I recently transfered to my C64/1570. I really look forward to playing through BT1, BT2, BT3 and Dragon Wars again!).
Be prepared to wait for an update far ahead into the future, the Restaurant at the end of the Universe won't be constructed for another x billion years.
Yes. If intergalactic lizards invaded earth tomorrow, I'm quite sure most political and religious conflicts would be forgotten pretty soon....until the lizards were defeated, that is.
Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands. Plenty of options there, starting at about $1.25 euro if you don't need a server to host large files on (=pay extra for bandwidth).
the option to use pure text? That is, no HTML what so ever. Not in the text, not when qouting, not ever? I've read a million howtos about this (for previous versions, on Win and Linux), but haven't been able to totally disable HTML - afaik it's not possible. Somebody please correct me.
But what difference did that make? I haven't been following the legal aspect of Edonkey, but I'm still downloading hard-to-find stuff from the Edonkey network, like I've been doing for the past 5 years or so. From my perspective, nothing has changed. Or am I missing something?
I don't know about the US, but here in Europe most public transit agencies already uses systems like this (at least since 5-6 years back), and in most cases better (more details). Which is quite useful for me, I live in Sweden but have my job and a bunch of friends in Denmark - I can use both the Swedish transportation search and the Danish one to search for destinations / plan routes in both countries.

It was done in 1983, you can get one for about $50-$100 on Ebay. See:
Q $0E0) What is the difference(s) between the Newtronics 1541 and the 1541C? (only one difference is needed)
A $0E0) (George Page, a noted authority on CBM Drives, indicated that Commodore made this a tough question to answer.) By the time the 1541C was introduced, Commodore threw a number of drives together and called them 1541Cs. The theoretical 1541C exhibited the following features:
No head banging, and other problems fixed by modified ROMs.
Case color matches C64C and C128 computers.
Eh? Could you please elaborate a bit on that? I've been using C64's since the mid-80's, and currently own about 20-22 of them in different revisions (plus 5 C128 and C128D), but I have to admit I've never heard of a C64 from 1980 with a "buggy rom chip". Also, the commodore techs didn't start working on what would become the C64 until January 1981. Are you confusing it with Basic 1.0 for the PET? There has never been anything but Basic 2.0 in any C64 revision.
I once had a colleague who was training to get an MCSE. Out of curiosity I took a look at the introduction course, at the very begining they were bragging about how Windows NT consisted of 50 gazillion-something lines of code.
Now, most Slashdotters would read that and say:
"bloated software."
The average non-techie computer user will think:
"wow!"
When seeing these silly requirements for Vista (oh, what a stupid stupid stupid name!), most Slashdotters are thinking:
"Incompetent idiots."
The average non-techie computer user will think:
"wow!"
...and that's their loss. I think that 75% of those who give FreeBSD a (serious) try will stick to it. It's the best thing since Amiga OS, and I'm happy to run it both on my desktop, and for my router+web/ftp-server in the wardrobe.
My ISP doesn't have any such limit (on my 100Mb connection). I usually take home around 100-150GB / week (BT, DC++ and Usenet).
No, I don't have time (or HD-space) to watch everything so I delete most stuff unseen, and yes - it's a huge waste of bandwidth. But I don't want to pay $35/month for nothing!

I've been looking for ideas for a future text-adventure. This is brilliant, thank you.

It should be, unless they want their grandchildren to live in a third-world country.

Please don't. Antarctica doesn't need more polluting humans.

Unfortunately not. Nothing in there can get rid of all HTML, unless you're talking about new options in the new version?

Please do. What difference does that make? I'm not using the edonkey2000 client, I'm using eMule. The network is still there.

I first read it as "Little Britain to log all vehicle movement", that wouldn't have surprised me. http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/bbcone/int/promo/img2/i/-/ comedy/littlebritain/
But "Britain to log all vehicle movement", that's just bizarre. 1984 indeed.

as not many people use FreeBSD ;-)

When you think about it, yes...
Just try to imagine what kind of hotdogs we would have to choose from if all great chefs of the world were developing new hotdog-recipes all the time!
Mmmmmm. I think I'm going to buy some hotdogs, hotdog bread and 5 different kinds of cheese to experminent with tonight.
"For only 99,- Euro, a bargain."
Even compared to FreeBSD or how much a Linux distro would cost me?
Sounds nice, but for 99 euro I would at least want a time limited installation to try out, before taking out my VISA.
Well... yeah. But I'm at work, bored to death and with nothing better to do pick on details in Slashdot comments.
If you're talking about the NES, your memory is a bit clouded. It has an 8 bit processor and can display 24 colours on screen, not 256 (8 bits).
