  3. vi rules on mobile devices on The Birth of vi · · Score: 1
On something like Nokia 770 or Communicator or some S60 symbian device vi is infinitely better than emacs over SSH connections simply because you never need control or alt keys.

Vi is perfectly usable over GPRS connection using a virtual keyboard + touchscreen. Typing in ctrl-sequences requires much more work.

I used Emacs/Jed for 12 years but have now more and more found myself in vi(m).

A former work buddy who used marijuana (and also other crap so he's not the perfect example) told me that while living in USA it was easier for a minor to acquire marijuana than booze. That strikes me as odd. One is an illegal substance, the other is not. Oh well. Catholics.

  12. Why feed? on The Failure of the $100 Laptop? · · Score: 1
Why is feeding such a big deal?

If they overpopulate and cannot feed themselves, then feeding them with foreign money only worsens the problem. They will overpopulate more until eventually there WILL be famine. It's not a given RIGHT to recklessly multiply and expect someone to come to aid.

Best let the population self-regulate its size to manageable levels. Just stop feeding for 20 years and check the outcome. The only working form of development aid is education. Education will drop birth rate, improve living conditions etc.

  21. Eudora never had good UTF-8 or IMAP or LDAP on Future Eudora Based on Thunderbird · · Score: 1
Eudora version 7.x still does not have correctly working UTF-8 support. The LDAP support is hard to use, and IMAP is really flaky.

On top of that, version 7 introduced bugs that sometimes destroy mailbox indexes (that's why Eudora nowadays keeps multiple backups of everything). HTML formatted messages sometimes crash the whole thing. Its "fast indexing" sometimes hangs. The junk mail filter is abysmally bad. Sometimes perfectly fine filter rules cease to function. And so on.

It was good, cheap software, but started to show its age in late 90's.

With 2000/XP, _every_ WLAN-card, graphics card and sound card seems to have different configuration utility. The XP wireless zero configuration is of no help since it sucks and does not work well with many cards.

Will these FINALLY be replaced by consistent, generic configuration tools offered by the OS, the drivers just sitting somewhere there behind a sane API, Linux-style? Explaining WLAN configuration stuff to Windows users is painful because every case is different.
