  1. Re:Well... on How Secure is Windows Firewall? · · Score: 2, Informative

Yes, Kerio 2.1.5 is the best software firewall for Windows, in my opinion. It is still available for download on the official site, although I can't find any links pointing to it. I used it before getting my new Nvidia nForce3 250GB with a firewall on the actual motherboard.

Definitely avoid Zonealarm, whatever you do. It is more bloated and less effective than most alternatives.

I had this problem too until I updated to Firefox 0.9(.1/.2). Before that I used the trick to change the text size up and then back to normal, which miraculously solves all rendering problems.

One site that I still find doesn't render properly is Teoma. I always use Google though, so that doesn't affect me nearly so much as Slashdot.

  3. Re:You know what this means, don't you? on New Alliance Hopes To Standardize Web Plug-Ins · · Score: 1

This will probably be a problem in the future. I think we can expect several spyware-type plugins if the alternative browsers to IE continue to grow in popularity.

While I believe this standardisation is a good thing on the whole, abuse becomes more likely as the spyware companies are given an easier way to get to a larger audience. Of course, given the relatively small amount of users (and a low percentage of clueless users!) using these browsers as opposed to IE, we're safe for the moment.

Credit cards come closest to an international standard for funds transfer, but few Europeans have them

I know of no one who does not have a credit card, with the possible exception of an old relative. I live in the UK. Is it different elsewhere in Europe?

Other than that, I agree strongly.

  7. Re:Yet another reason for the US to switch to metr on The Logic Behind Metric Paper Sizes · · Score: 1

Exactly. I think it's all to do with upbringing and reluctance to change.

I was born and live in England, and was brought up on the metric system. If anything, I hate the fact that "English measurements" is always used to refer to the older, mostly less sensible system (with the exception of in the construction inductry, from what I hear).

As for paper sizes, I had absolutely no idea that you people over the Atlantic used something other than the familiar metric paper size system. In fact, I had no idea that A4, A3, and so on were metric - I thought they were just the common paper measurements.

  8. For a Windows user on First Ten Programs on New Install? · · Score: 1

For Windows, I'd recommend a few:

    1) Firefox. Obviously.
    2) Spybot S&D (and AdAware, just to be safe).
    3) Agnitum Outpost Firewall (or equivalent).
    4) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (unless you already have some commercial one).

After you've got that sorted, you'd be free to mess around with Winamp, Foobar2000, Powerarchiver, Azureus, Emule or some such.

  9. Re:Give me a break. on Say Goodbye to BuyMusic.com · · Score: 1

That would be great news, but I reckon that having it linked on /. is likely to decrease the percentage of IE viewers quite a bit...

Still, I like the idea that people in the tier above most basic users are starting to get rid of IE.
