    Sounds pretty right on to me. Many of his "ideas" can be attributed to others several years ago. Mandelbrot comes to mind. If he has all of these "new" ideas, I'd really have liked to see him DO something with them over the past 20 years (Yes, I know he was enlightened but a few years ago).

    Of course, the guy knows a lot more than I probably ever will about mathematics, but does anyone else get the feeling that he's bypassed any normal method of peer evaluation in order to claim credit himself?

    ... and what's the big deal? All he says is that the universe "might" be able to be represented in four lines of code. Wasn't Mandelbrot doing this 30 years ago?

    If he had published some formulas, I'd be impressed. For now, it seems hyped. Anyone read the book already?

    Don't use an image-only format at all. How often do you flip through books wishing that you can grep them? Use PDF or some other searchable file format.

    I read cnn.com regularly, and I often notice the articles in their "sci-tech" section a day or so before I see them on /. Many of CNN.com's ads are on the front page and I assume contribute somewhat to their site revenue.

    Does anyone else think that it would be appropriate for more "content" to be provided by the slashdot team in order to justify a subscription service?

    If you pick your nose in public, people might see it. The only thing is that this will ensure that someone sees it. Thing is, no one will care. No one will care that you jay-walk, no one will care that you look girls up and down, and no one will care that you spit your gum into the bushes. It will be accepted, and as long as you don't do anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about. I'm all for it.

    I feel as though we should find the terrorists and put them in front of the courts. This will show the rest of the world that Americans *CAN* be fair, in light of the tragic and vengeful voices portrayed in the media. I also feel that we should do anything that we can to avoid killing ANY innocent citizen.

    I also feel that we can all come out stronger after this. U.S. has been a bully to other nations, but we sure as hell didn't "deserve" this. We do a lot to help out other nations who will ally with us. If you extend an arm to a person walking down the street and they refuse to shake your hand, you don't have a good view of that person.

    I feel that G.W. will do the right thing (I voted for Gore)

    Personally I will never use Netgear hubs again, as I've had a 10/100 stop correctly passing traffic between 10 and 100 baseT hosts. The max packet size that it would correctly transfer was something like 872. I've had another Netgear hub actually explode, bringing down the NIC in a machine with it. Not great products. Cheap, but not reliable.

    As of Linux 2.2, Linux has better networking capabilities than those others mentioned above. It makes perfect sense to use Linux in embedded hardware as long as there is enough CPU power and RAM available. And the Disk on Chip looks to Linux like a hard disk. You can partition it, and dont have to worry about flash drivers. It's a rather nice interface.

    M-Systems (the maker of the Disk on Chip) gives you the kernel patches if you ask for it. Been using DOC with Linux for a while now, and M-Systems has given the driver out for as long as I remember.

    Kernel 2.0.34, I remember reading in a newsgroup of Alan Cox saying that the rollover was 490 days, but it doesn't seem like that yet. We'll see.

    In 2.2, there's an option to put console on the serial port. If that's the case, it wont print out the kernel messages to your monitor, but to your serial port. Check to see if that's what's happening. I'll bet it is.

    Ever think about Mad Scientist who spreads Nanotechnology as a virus? If they could do advanced stuff (I'm not really familar with nanotech, but hey. . .). What if someone (ie, the government) used their wonderful encryption to send these little robots out to kill? They could have them attack whatever they wanted, right? Who's going to control nanotech? Is it going to be publicly available? In my opinion, this is where it could be a lot better to have nanotech controlled by a central source. Releasing the technology to the public could cause some crazy stuff. Any ideas?
