I had an incompetent manager for just over 8 years before getting transferred out to "Data Security" (where i did most of the same job). Now, she is gone (position eliminated), and I'm going back to "Network".
I will say that she was a heck of a politician.....
Mark Cuban's example of Google is also way off base.
Google does use a "proprietary" software system: Google File System, which is the core of all of their major systems, including: Search, Gmail, Maps, Google Office, etc...
Google's core business is selling ad space.
What makes them so different than any other business Mark?
The "free" stuff your bantering about shows your clueless....
"..if you drive over some schoolkids while fondling with your car-radio, you are still guilty of murder."
In Miami, someone killed a U.M. student, injured her friend and ended up paying ~$150 for the "running a red light" ticket. There may have been some "probation" for a year or the like, but that was it.
Sorry, but it's not murder, it's just a ticket (sometimes).
That depends on the type of Bank you worked for. May certainly is no different for us than any other month. Then again, general consumer accounts aren't major for us.
Actually, it's not hard. What gets in the way is two things:
1) Vendors that refuse to certify patches. I have one that for a long time wouldn't support Windows 2000 SP4, and we could only install *certain* hotfixes. (Yes, it broke thier app)
2) Culture. Many companies install Firewalls, and AV but patching doesn't hit the radar, even after they've been hit with viruses that used a vector that could have been patched. They just use the "party line" of Microsoft and blame the virus author, missing the fact that they could have patched and never had a problem. This is a *real problem* that even GLB and HIPPA havn't solved:)
Have to admit that I have more problems patching my Linux boxes (2) than my Windows boxes. Even with apt-get under Debian I've had problems, and since my RH is out of "support" I have to manually download patches and install them. Ever tried to talk a newbie into installing a kernel patch:).

You might want to take those guys over in the Network Department out to lunch. Sounds like the've been working their tail off to keep your computer from the dozens of viruses and worms that are loose on the internet.
It only takes one laptop, or email to fry all but the best of the best networks.
It's work keeping Anti-Virus up to date, the Firewall setup with the correct inbound and outbound rules, the IDS alerts along could make one bonkers. Oh yea, and let's not forget about the patching....
You joke, this really happened to us. About 5 years ago they plugged a vacuum into the Matrix UPS. Blew up the Bay 5000 Switch that was our 10/100 core at the time. What a glorious mess!
I can remember talking to someone who thought that a reboot had fixed it, arguing that "No, it's down" with the "No, it's back up" replys going back and forth...
Needless to say, the cleaning crew is not welcome in the server room any more:)
Do you think that the motion to dismiss with prejudice from IBM is going to fail??
I imagine that the other guy was thinking that it actually might suceed.......:)
Here in Florida, you can go to your local Publix that doesn't use "loyalty" cards and often times beats the prices of their competitors that do use loyalty cards (Winn Dixie).
I've found it amusing that Winn Dixie is having financial problems and they heavily advertise their loyalty card.
It will eventually catch up with you though.

I guess I'm doing something wrong: Firefox v3.5, noscript.
Video does not play unless Javascript is enabled.
You haven't lived in Florida then (esp. South Florida). The local politicians make Washington DC look like fine upstanding citizens.
Let's see: Cronyism, kickbacks, bribes, Friend of a Friend deals, Spouses on the payroll (doing nothing), and the occasional rape and/or murder.
It's like a roach motel, money goes in, but none of it gets to the taxpayers......
What about those of us that walk/run on a treadmill instead of outside?
Should we skip the shoes and hope that we don't rip off a toe with a misstep?

Easy to say, but it's not always IT's fault. It could be outsourced to a provider and they failed to handle the upgrade correctly causing downtime.
Heads shouldn't roll if the vendor (who was doing the install) didn't do their job.

Hmmm.. I wonder, can't Daryl's comments be used against him on this one.
