This is how some load levelling is actually done at modern power plants. During the non-peak hours, a bit of extra power is used to pump water to a higher reservoir, which is then allowed to flow down through the same pump to generate a bit of extra power during peak hours. It is elegant, simple, and awfully cost-effective.
Well, whatever you do, don't go to Jackson Hewitt or H&R Block. I had the experience of going to JH last year, and I kid you not, they just have a "tax preparer" (who is not an accountant) use what amounts to a copy of TurboTax to do your return. And then they charge you $150.
If you're going to get your taxes done by someone, I would recommend a local small business/CPA, as they will likely actually KNOW tax codes and be able to suggest things you might otherwise miss.
Right. So aside from maintaining a separate frame buffer for each window, providing a toolkit that allows resolution independant user interfaces, forcing developers to stop assuming that only one user is logged on at a time and that that user is an administrator, moving most of the device drivers out into user space where they can't crash the rest of the system, improved scheduling on multiple cores, improved memory management, non-destructive re-partitioning, a version of DirectX where vendors can't claim their hardware is compliant when it really isn't, full disk encryption, 3rd party credential providers that don't replace system libraries, Media Center, and a desktop that doesn't look like ass, what does Vista actually offer?
I just wish we could figure who is forcing people to have kids.
I do hope you realize that your solution, not having children, would cause the extinction of the human race, right? If it is not possible for people to afford to have children, then there is very, very big problem with how society is working, and it needs to be overhauled in a hurry.
Automobiles are a lot more energy effecient then say a human.
Actually, that's not even close to true. Cellular metabolism in humans is IIRC about 90% efficient at converting chemical energy into food. Cars who burn gasoline are, at most, about 30% efficient. There's really no comparison in efficiency, the major difference is that we can't eat gasoline.
What the hell? Okay, so basically you're saying "the hell with everyone else, they should die because I'm too crowded." And someone modded you insightful. Come on, people!
Congratulations, you appear to be very healthy. You also hit the good numbers in the genetic lottery and have no congenital defects/chronic illnesses/hereditary conditions/disabilities that need treatment.
Please don't assume everyone in the world is healthy. Also, tobacco is bad for you when smoked, even if you don't see the effects right now. I smoked for eight years and never had a cough, but that means nothing.
To my surprise, it is even more responsive than the gas burner I previously had (I don't know how that works, but it does).
Okay, I don't know whether you were speaking figuratively or not, so I'll bite. The induction burner works by setting up some fast-switching AC, which induces current flow in the pan/pot you're using to cook. The burner works by directly heating the metal through EM induction, so the heat doesn't even have to travel through the metal from the outside (like with a gas range) since it's already there.
Very cool tech, IMO, and I would like to get one eventually when I buy a house.
As I stated, I am a Christian, which means I know that God created man
I would disagree. I think you believe God created man. The problem is that, given your statement, it doesn't appear that you have any doubt whatsoever as to the truth of your conviction. This is a good demonstration of faith.
Faith and intelligence are in no way mutually exclusive.
I would have to disagree again here. In adopting faith, you have closed the door on any kind of reevaluation of anything you already have faith in. Given that you know that no one can prove the "who", why do you "know" which one it is? It seems, contrary to what you said, that faith and intelligence (defined here as a search for truth, or a logical explanation of an event, or a greater understanding of the world) are inherently incompatible.
Although I think eventually, those people are just going to have to suck it up and learn to enjoy looking at turbines
You know, I remember driving through a valley in southern-central California (somewhere between Indio and LA) and seeing hundreds of huge lily-white turbines happily spinning away. Granted, I am a techie geek, but it was one of the most beautiful pieces of "architecture" that I've seen to this day.
I must agree with some of the other posters: Starship Troopers is one of my favorite books of all time, and I think that should be required reading for anyone wanting to get a feel for his work.
I am a Heinlein fan, and I think Number of the Beast is pretty bad. I heard from my father that Heinlein switched medications somewhere in the middle of this, which could account for its meandering nature and lack of resolution to any of the infinite silly plot threads it introduces.
As for the morality aspect, I would say (at least, for Stranger in a Strange Land) that society has moved on from when the book was published. I suspect that it was a very revolutionary book when it was published, and nowadays doesn't have the same impact due to a slightly more jaded, cynical, and liberal society.
In any case, give Starship Troopers a try, and if you don't like it, well, I'm in no position to dictate taste to you. I really enjoyed it, and if you don't then at least you don't feel that you have to pretend to in order to fit in:)
Interesting. I didn't think I would mess up on not selecting the right components.
I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the Slashdot mod system right now. Someone gets a +5 informative mod for unsubstantiated claims of Apple superiority, and I get modded 'Troll' for asking him where he got the numbers from.
Come on, people! I personally like Apple computers, but let's not call them cheaper when they're not!
I don't think so. I just hit the site, and an E1505 laptop with all the same vital specs (including better 15" display, though the video card is an X1400 instead of the X1600) comes out to be $1558. Where did you get your price figures from?
Right, since IBM (#15) doesn't have anything in Austin.....
Actually, it will come out as a pot of petunias, whose final thought will be "Oh no, not again."

The FBI investigates? I would have assumed it would be the Postal Inspection Service instead...

...but I can see how this would be the case. By the way, is there any comparative study about driving after racing go-karts or using bumper cars?
Thanks to the nested comment structure, I thought you were talking about "Crowther and Woods' Colossal Cave Adventure"...
Which works just as well.
I'm not saying that the GTA series is a good role model, but I don't see how it is inherently racist that the PC is a black man.
Or let some racehorses loose, so they can just gallop on through

News without propaganda in it? Eeew!

I can't tell you.
They are, only problem is that you can't know both what their position is on an issue, and how fast they want to implement it.
Also, I think they have a dead cat, or something....
Actually, this is much more like Fark. I think they own a trademark on the "poorly photoshopped Admiral Ackbar" meme.
