Why play Minesweeper or Solitare when you can play a SpyHunter like game?
In Excel under file menu, do 'Save as Web Page'
Say 'Publish Sheet' and 'Add Interactivity'
Save to some htm page on your drive.
Load the htm page with IE. You should have Excel in the middle of the page.
Scroll to row 2000, column WC. Select row 2000, and tab so that WC is the active column.
Hold down Shift+Crtl+Alt nad click the Office logo in the upper-left.
Use the arrow keys to drive, space to fire, O to drop oil slicks, and when it gets dark, use H for your headlights.
Requires DirectX and Microsoft Office 2000 SP0.
If you update Office it will no longer work.
Living in the DC area I decided to try the metro way. Three weeks later I figured that the $20/week for a hour commute on bus and train versus $10/week for a 20 minute straight drive just wasn't worth it.
I'm about to move from the 20 minute drive to a hour drive. Perhaps then the train will be a decent alternative.
This may seem amazing to some slashpeople, but not everyone can afford a computer upgrade and a new OS every couple of years.
I'm fully aware of that. This article was submitted more of a PSA than anything else. I know that people still run older versions of operating systems. Heck, I only recently changed my home Windows machine to XP as 98 worked fine for me. The reason I felt this was a story was because the numbers themselves astounded me. 108 million PCs are still running an outdated version of Windows. I thought it was news. Slashdot editors thought it was news. Washington Post thought it was news.
Computers running an older OS is not necessary a bad thing but tends to be interesting that despite the current trend millions find no reason to upgrade. If you don't like it, don't read it. The best thing about Slashdot is that if you don't like the news you can submit your own
But why exactly was the author running a linux desktop then if BSD is so much better?
He said it was his machine at work. Could be company policy, who knows?
Other than that I do agree with you completly about personal machines. If a Linux distro is going to be used as a server than an able sysadmin who knows what s/he is doing should set it up, as with any other OS.
Why does this have to be vendor specific? Will it have support for *nx, *BSD, Solaris, etc?
Or this a contract with Microsoft?
Is the specs to this opened or closed?
I believe I read somewhere that the Supreme Court ruled it is ok to use a trademark as long as it is not associated with financial gain. Can't find the link right now but it had to do with how sites similar to the corporate hate sites got away with it.
The patent describes software that automatically guesses when a gift is being purchased by extracting key words such as "birthday" or "anniversary" from an attached message. It might also note details such as the fact that the buyer has asked it to be gift wrapped or that the recipient address is different from the purchaser address, according to the patent, which was granted on 8 March.
And people screamed over Google's ads with Gmail.
Most worrying is that the patent appears to target children, says Karen Coyle of the public interest alliance Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility in Berkeley, California.
Isn't their a law regarding this? Something about consent from a parent if the child is 13 or younger?
According to Amazon spokesperson Patty Smith, based in Seattle, Washington, these worries are "a little premature and a bit speculative". She adds that the company has no plans to implement the technology at present.
For now.
What gets me is how easy it is to find out which channel these bots go into and what commands they accept. What prevents any Joe-Blow with a little sniffer from logging into one of these 25,000+ bot rooms and sending them DoS or self-destruct commands? I'm really suprised that their isn't any "bot wars" from disgruntled 13-year olds (no offense to any 13 year old/.ers) who want to take control of all of thoses infected boxes.
While I was going to submit this as a story, it would seem more appropriate as a link from this one.
News.com has an interesting article talking about how bot nets have migrated mainly from DoS to wide-spread spys. A growing increase in bot nets have been used to gather sensitive identity information and install adware and spyware. The Honeynet Project estimates that some of the networks are made up of more than 50,000 computers.
Thanks but it is spelled with a k;)
As for my kid, I'm really hoping for a boy. Right now though I figure he is Mark.66 as we're 3 months into it. Still in alpha stage:)
That doesn't mean they're not going to release it at all. Though the private use does make one weary on if we'll ever see it. The article is down and Panic Struck Productions only have the synopsis.
The movie looks pretty decent. The CGI effects are better than the original movies though the acting could use a little improvement. For an independant film I'm really impressed with it. If they showed it at my local theater I'd be willing to cough up the $9 to see it just for the original content.
Any word on how they are going to release this film? Online? Select theater?
Google wouldn't lie!
Sweet. Thanks for the info. Now I can catch it in theater as well as download it.
Anyone know if this is a one time showing?
should they be allowed to generate 'closed-source' solutions at the taxpayers' expense?
No. I paid for it I want to see it. How else will we know if it works the way they say it works?

Sounds similar to the jetgun the military use to use. Does anyone know the difference?

Does it include Slashdot first posters who do not RTFA?*
*I'm gonna go read it now...
Here is a picture of one.
I think the submitter meant hand tremor not hand tumor, but maybe both would cause problems.
:(
Yeah, I had just finished reading an article about a tumor. Checked what I wrote twice and both times it escaped me
It's just an extension of the childhood game where you write a word on a piece of paper, fold it over, and pass it along, purple monkey dishwasher.
I think you have a freaking best seller on your hand there.
He then sold his book and made millions only to purchase an Italian, lesbian monkey who would...
Anyone care to finish?
8008?
Oh thats the calculator....
and at least notifiy the owners of these machines?
Something like that already exists.
Feel free to contact any of the infected and cross them out.
Maybe I should have sent THIS in afterall...
making this a hardware-vendor lead initiative

Easy way to make an ISO from a cd is /dev/cdrom > mycd.iso

Oh, better yet, maybe you should auction off the name?
Thats better than my whole version naming scheme.
