Has the survey taken into account the fact that the number of people using the internet is increasing day-by-day ?
Another thing that I have seen is, that in a company for which I am a consultant, they have blocked all kinds of downloads or email websites etc. So, even if I as a user want to use Firefox everyday, I still have to make use of IE. And now multiply this with 1000 people in the company, and then multiply this with 100s of companies who do this.
So the survey is not accurate or even close to accurate.

Start with Logo. It's a simple language, plus some very basic graphics built into it. Kids like graphics and stuff, so if "something is happening on screen" it feels good.
Then move to Basic in a few weeks/months. Teaches fundamental procedural programming easily.
Then later in a few years or so, depending on your kid's intelligence, C, Lisp , Perl etc.

A better idea would be to genuinely figure out how to parallel process your database queries. If this is just a quick-n-dirty fix you want, you could use some perl scripts and use it to split your database, or you could get more technical, accurate and use MPI/PVM to actually parallel process your database accessing. Since Mysql is open source, you could look into it. Just an option.

Well this may be counted as a troll for some fanatics of anti-outsourcing, but since you have a realistic problem, I can give you one possible solution. You seem to have a huge amount of experience in programming. I suggest you apply to one of the top software outsourcing companies in India, and teach the workers/code monkeys there "good" programming skills (who according to as I have read on /., do not do much of a great job!)... So you will be in a challenging field in the sense that you will be working with a lot of intelligent people who have an interest in programming, on top of that since you will be a non-Indian teacher, you will definitely be paid a lot of money with which you can live a real good extravagant life in India. Although, the above solution requires you to leave the country you currently reside in, it is a possible solution :) Plus if you are adventurous enough, then a new country , new languages, new people is a lot of fun ...

I used to work for a company that sold software on a commercial basis with all licenses etc. etc. Every company keeps a database of their customers and their license keys. So you should be able to get the original key back, or get the company who sold you their software to invalidate your existing key and give you a new one. If the company you bought the software from, does not provide such a support, it would be a good time to start looking elsewhere for similar software.

Last year in my college, we had the same problem.. we just made usage of Linux compulsory. Any windows machine was not allowed to connect to the internet at all. If someone needed windows, they had to tunnel through a very tight firewall especially used for windows, to reduce the virus attacks. Once you make using Linux compulsory, and educate the people on the benefits and advantages of Linux with respect to safety and security of data etc., people will automatically convert. Initially you will have to face revolts etc, regarding usability of Linux, but in the end, all will settle down to using Linux. But you still should have to do a tunnelling for the Windows thing, otherwise they will throw you out! And as someone else has suggested, block MAC adddresses of virus affected computers till people rectify it.

I think it is more of a "What the fuck !!" shock attitude of corporates. When you spend a few years and a lot of effort and money on making something, you definitely want to reap the benefits of it. If you do not have IP then your competitors will take what you have and can spend lesser time making an even better/cheaper version of your product because most of the design is already done. So IP was started by corporations to ward off competition from other corporations but now they have to deal with hackers and more people starting off with small start-ups which is in fact not what they had expected to happen. Tyrants never expect their countrymen to revolt, which is what is happening. With the upcoming of F/OSS, there is a mutiny that the "tyrants of capitalism" see approaching and IP is the only cave in which they think they can hide and remain safe.
