Why do they always compare mysql and postgres anyway. Ingres and SAPdb can both compete oracle on a feature for feature basis much better then mysql can and so can firebird.
Wake up people there are more then two open source databases and some of them enterprise ready TODAY and have been in heavy production use by fortune 500 companies for a long time.
I too opposed our response to 9/11 and so did billions of other people. You want to kill everybody who opposed your response to 9/11? Typical American. Their only response to critisim to kill the other person.
By the way chaves did not mock your need for help. He mocked bush for his inadequate response. He was right. Bush sat on his ass and did nothing for a few days. What's worse bush had cut funding for the army corps of engineers who had done a study and wanted to fix the problem (by 80%). Bush also turned over wetlands over to the developers even though the scientists said wetlands would mitigate flooding in new orleans. Finally Bush sent a ton of national guardsmen to iraq to secure the oil wells and so there was a shortage of guardsmen in new orleans.
You are right. Businesses have no morals and will do anything and everything to make more money. Most business people will never make a decision based on what is good for society, what is good for the world, what is good for their neighborhood, or country. Most business people will never even for a second consider the morality or immorality of their actions. TO them money is the only real ethic and moral.
The problem is the human beings do have morals, and the open source community seems the especially moral. If the open source community abandons mysql then it will no longer be able to keep up it's popularity and feature race.
Mysql is a business build on the popularity of mysql int he open source world. Once that's gone they don't really have too much else. Their product already lags most other open source databases in features.
A fundamentalist Christian cleric recently called for a fatwah on a world leader urging his followers to assasinate him. Oddly enough not one prominent moderate christian leader or american political leader condemned him although some did say they personally had no plans to obey the fatwah.
You want to give this nutjob money? He later said he never called for an assassination even though it's on tape, you trust him to tell you the truth about his own organization?
I have never heard of any company who is using VB actually switching to another technology. It seems to be a cult of some sort.
I remember when MS told all their VB developers that they could no longer use any VBX components and had to switch to OCX components instead. At that time I knew several VB developers who had invested thousands of dollars in third party VBX controls. Not one of them chose to go with Delphi or java or some other superior product. Not one. They all bent over and took it up the butt and paid for new controls.
That's just the way VB programmers are. They just don't trust their ability to program or learn new things.
"No, actually you decribed a nightmare for most business people. "
Really? Then why don't you provide a link to web site where the chamber of commerce is FOR higher wages and FOR environmental regulation. Really don't bother they are never for those things. Ever. They fight tooth and nail against every single safety and environment regulation and against every benefit and wage increase.
"Businesses must sell products to consumers; in order to do that, consumers must have money (and since the vast majority of consumers aren't wealthy by legacy or investment) and so must have jobs to provide that money."
You will find that most business are against the middle class. They are for having the masses be slaves to the few rich. That's why today businesses employ prison labor (in the US and in china) and why they chase the lowest wages possible all over the world. THey would rather pay a vietnamese girl 50 cents to work 13 hours.
"Healthy customers who have disposable income make happy companies, and these conditions are only generated by a somewhat resonable wage market."
That must happen in La La land. IT doesn't happen on earth where businesses always chase the lowest wages possible even if it means moving manufacturing to countries where people live in slavery and near slavery.
"Hey, I dislike Capitalism as much as the next guy (hey, wait...) but let's not be stupid about it."
By the same token let's not let those rose colored glasses distort what is actually happening all around us.
"Agreed, which is why they should just stick with MS Office (which they've apparently already purchased) and save as XML instead. Problem solved. No need to have the Boston Office Party."
MS XML formats are proprietary, and have both patent and copyright limitations on them. Plus they can be locked via DRM. Try to open up those sample PPT files that MS provides you in open office for example. You can't because of DRM.
MS formats are locked so that only MS products can open them. IF you bypass the DRM then you can go to jail under the DMCA and MS can sue for patent violations.
Yea, word crashed on me once and filed a bug report. Then MS sent two engineers to my house to try and figure out what happened. I served them some beers and ordered a pizza after about 10 hours but eventually found the problem. Apparently there was a bug in a DLL. Well the engineers just fixed the bug and installed the new DLL in my system and everything was hunky dory. I even had some leftover pizza for the next day.
MS rules man. If word crashes they will fix it right away.
75% of all businesses fail and leave their customers, vendors and creditors up shit's creek. If business ran education 75% of all schools would fail. 75% of all roads would close.
You get the picture. Businesses have no qualms about screwing their customers, vendors, and the public at large.
Let me put it another way. To a busiess person the ideal environment is one where slavery is legal and there are no safety or environmental laws. That way they can make their slaves work all day for bread and water, dump their waste in the river and maximize profits for the shareholders (which in most cases is a handful of people).
People are sheep. They will eat whatever you cram down their throats, they will drink whatever the sexy model is holding in her hands, they will wear whatever bit of cloth is labled with a celebirties name on it.
Coke and Pepsi spend billions of dollars a year because they know they can make people pay for sugared water if they put up a picture of a sports star holding a bottle.
People are stupid consumers, get a picture of bono or paris hilton using linux and every body will buy it and like it. It has nothing to do with quality, ease of use, or anything else. The sheeple will make themselves love it if they think it makes them attractive to the opposite sex.
I think it's wonderful. It saves taxpayers money, it hurts the MS botton line and profitability (a little). What's wrong with that? I wish every corporation, state, city, country in the world did the same thing. It would be such a happy day if MS reported a loss one quarter.
I remember a while back all the MS shills and astro turfers were bitching about how MS will never support OASIS because it sucked as a standard. I would not bet on MS supporting any standard anytime soon.
The new nissan micra seems to have some sort of a bluetooth or a RFID key. When you aproach the car it unlocks the doors and then you simply get in and turn the ignition without taking the "key" out of your pocket and putting it into the ignition.
When you think about it that's real cool, but only if they can make it as safe as a key.
"This isn't "for you". Any average person seeing this will get confused."
Well I can certainly see why somebody as ignorant as you would get confused.
" Hell, BSD's ports tree resolves dependencies too, but does that make it easy?"
Yes it does.
"That's one of the main reasons Windows is generally easier. The only "dependency" conflicts are dll files which are handled automatically without the user's knowledge."
You mean that in windows installing software can actually lock up your system, put it into an unstable state, and prevent your windows from booting up. And you think that's easier.
"Are you not familiar with english? What you're trying to say and what you actually say don't match up. How many more times must I show your own contradictions?"
So far you have shown NONE. IT'S EASIER TO INSTALL SOFTWARE IN LINUX THEN WINDOWS. Get used to it OK.
"Jesus christ... will you grow up and make valid, logical arguments?"
It's a perfectly valid argument. YOu are pointing our a.00001% scenario to try and prove that software installation in linux is as easy as windows. I have pointed out that for the vast majority of cases software installation is easier in windows. Remember even if I have to download an RPM and install it that makes it as easy as windows not harder.
"Yes it's free and organized, but that's all I can think of what it has going for it. Do you think the average person is going to know how to solve dependency conflicts, or did you just forget to mention that in your ramblings?"
Once again you are a lying ignorant fuck. YAST resolves dependencies for you, so does aptitute and YUM. Stop lying please.
"You're a hypocritical moron who can't tell the difference from words or shit falling out of your mouth. The next argument you make better have some sort of logical base"
I have proven you to be a lying, ignorant corporate shill. It's up to you to prove that installing software on linux is harder then installing software in windows. You have failed miserably every time you have made an attempt. Now you are simply reduced to trying to insult me and are doing a very poor job at it.
"Is that no different than getting an RPM package for Linux off a website that isn't in the package manager already? Linux isn't immune to it."
99.9999999% of linux users don't ever do that. So stop lying.
"With zipping built into windows XP, you don't really have to "unzip" it since it acts as any old folder. Just go into it and double click to the installer."
Only XP. And even then it's still an extra step which makes it harder to install software in windows then linux.
"How is searching through a few websites or even google different than searching through *hundreds* of pieces of software? The same manual intervention done finding the software online is comparable to the search done in the package manager."
The fact that you don't know the difference shows how immensely ignorant you are about this subject. In the windows way you have to google, you have to visit each site to figure out what the software does and whether it would work for you, you have to find the download link, you have to agree to a license to download, you have to put in your email address (and more usually), you have to download, you have to unzip and you have click on more dialogs and agree to more outragous licenses.
In linux the descriptions are all there, no need to give out personal information, no need to fill out forms, no need to download, no need browse to multiple pages. You click, you install.
IT"S MUCH EASIER TO INSTALL SOFWARE IN LINUX THEN WINDOWS.
"No matter what you do, there's manual work involved. Get over it. Stop counting insignificant clicks."
Less manual work in linux. I will repeat myself. IT"S MUCH EASIER TO INSTALL SOFWARE IN LINUX THEN WINDOWS.
"Since when did you have to always go to a store to buy software? You can order it online as well."
How is this easier then windows. You still have to fill out a form and type in all your personal information as well as your credit card info. On top of that you have to pay. It's more work then linux, it's more hassle then linux, it costs more money then linux.
"Steam is designed exactly for that (HL2)."
How was that easier then installing softare in linux? It was not.
"Stop lying. Stop skewing the facts. Stop exaggerating. Stop ignoring the downfalls that Linux has while focusing on one possibility in windows. Every single install method requires work on part of the user. Get over it."
I have now proven you to be an ignorant liar. Every single argument you have posted actually proves me right, that it's easier to install software in linux.
Next time you are shilling for a corporation don't resort to lies. People don't take you seriously.
So you are going to let 10 year olds choose what technology you use to surf the web? Why not let them choose your car, which news papers you read, which magazines you subscibe to and what clothes you wear too?
Why are you letting your kids dictate how you live your life and which products you use?

Lucky for me I am not in school anymore, I would hate to have chosen such a clueless school. If they can't build a web site that works in more then one browser imagine how screwed up the rest of their stuff is.
I am not saying you should leave, but if I were you I would ask the administration why your school is incapable of writing web sites that follow standards. It's a serious question and it should be answered.

The only exception to this is the microsoft web sites where I have to go sometimes and I have to use IE because most of their pages don't work in FF.
The average person will eat whatever you shove down their throat. MS knows that, Politicians know that, why don't you know it?
You are working off an old sheet.
Oracle 10G is as easy if not easier the MS Sql. It also costs the same feature for feature. Oracle has now matched MS on price on every level.
Why not use SAPdb or ingres. Both are open source and both have virtually every feature you are likely to need.
Why do they always compare mysql and postgres anyway. Ingres and SAPdb can both compete oracle on a feature for feature basis much better then mysql can and so can firebird.
