I never use safari on my mac. How could I possibly live without find as you type and live bookmarks. I have multiple RSS feeds on my toolbar including slashdot. I have foxylicious installed. How could I possibly give those up to use safari?
The Hauppauge MediaMVP, Model 1000 is a 85 dollar device that does pretty much the same thing without the wireless.
It can also act as a front end to mythtv.
The problem with the macs is not the front end, it's the back end. How do you get your mac to record the TV signal without spending a bundle bundle and how do you run your cable from the living room to your office.
If the apple wireless device you mentioned could also encode video and stream it back to the PC then you'd have something. Even then I doubt wireless would have enough bandwidth for smooth encoding and decoding of video.
I think I will copy your post and present it to anybody on slashdot who goes on a liberterian rant about how evil the govt is and we should just get out of the way of business so that they could make the world a better place to live.
"There is absolutely no substitute for intelligent, capable people. Even the best process is worthless if the people doing the work don't have a clue. "
I would add "people who care" to that list. Sometimes you have intelligent and capable people but they don't give a damn and you end up with crap.
Intelligence is only half of the equation. The other half is caring, work ethic, and the willingness to play nice.
A brilliant genious who is incabable of working with their teammates is not only worthless but an actual drag on the project.
Do you ever get one of those days when every time you get in your car the same band is playing? Sometimes it seems like the band is even follwing you around into the stores as muzak.
It happens to me occationally, I always get a kick out of it.
Oh and a few times I have left my car while a song was playing and when I entered it again after many hours the same song was playing.
Before you ask no I don't listen to top 40 radio stations where there is a giant loop.
"A pure computational method for generating randomness has not been found...and I'd guess it can't be done"
A serious question.
How would you know if you did generate one? I mean can you tell by looking at a stream of numbers whether the output is "truly" random? Also what time scale would you use to judge?
I don't know if it's true or not but supposedly when Freud read Marx he is said to have muttered "it will never work, people are just not that good".
Communism will never work because human beings are not by nature generous and kind. Communism relies on a misconceived notion of what humans are like.
Capitalism on the other hand relies on the evil nature of all humans. All humans are greedy and selfish. Capitalism tries to set peoples greed against each other to try and achieve some end.
Capitalism is satanism, it's the codification into a philosophy and practice the seven deadly sins. It works brilliantly becasue we are all evil as Jesus would have defined evil.
Lately it seems that treaties are just too hard and require the agreement of that pesky body known as the congress. Now we have these things called "agreements". For example you have the "North American Trade Agreement" NAFTA. It's not a treaty and does need congressional agreement but it's kind of like a treaty anyway.
Anyway you are right. In the end it's whoever has the bigger bombs does whatever they want. There is no such thing as civilization when it comes to international treaties or agreements. It's the wild west. The US has pulled out lots of treaties and of course refuses to sign others. We do because we can. If anybody objects we certainly have no compunction against killing a few hundred thousand of them to make a point or two.
"What processors and O/S are running in your car engine? You don't know?"
That is a stupid question and it proves nothing. I don't need to know what processor or OS it uses in order to operate my car. On the other hand if you are using a computer at work you do need to know what operating system it uses and how that operating system works.
My example of not knowing the difference between a stickshift and automatic is better. The difference between windows and linux is that one is a stickshift and the other an automatic. If a user can't tell the difference he is stupid. If a user tells his boss that the doesn't know how to use a stickshift and refuses to learn in order to get his job done then he should be fired.
" There is significant evidence that Intelligence did not fail, but rather was disregarded."
That's not really all that much better. Either way the head of the CIA should have been canned instead of being given a metal. In fact the president should have been canned too.
It's the job of the CIA to tell the truth to the national security advisor. It's her job to tell the president to truth, and it's the job of the president to make decisions.
So what happened? Tenant was given a metal, rice was promoted and bush got re-elected. Incompetence pays in the US.
I can't speak for the rest of the world but in America people don't give a crap. No matter how evil and vile somebody acts if they can promise you a couple of bucks or offer up some idealogy the sheeple will fall for it hook line and sinker.
Look at it this way. 9/11 was the single largest failure of american intelligence since pearl harbor and the guy most responsible for it got a metal. The people that were most responsible for sloppy planning and execution of the invasion of Iraq were all promoted, the guy who wrote the memos justifying torture was promoted.
If an average American can't get lathered up about widespread torture of humans under our care why do you think they will raise an eyebrow over widespread unethical and sleazy behavior by Bill Gates and his company?
Evolution is faster, has more features and is easier to use then outlook IMHO.
The exchange connector is crucial for me but I agree that we need something to get rid of the exchange abomination.
Its been over a week and I am still waiting for one of the exchange admins to add a mailing list. I guess they are all too busy trying to keep it running to actually take the (apparently) hours it will take to create a mailing list. Here I thought they would just have to click a couple of buttons or something.
Nah his point is stupid. People will switch to linux when their workplace switches to linux.
MS got into the home because it first got into the corporate desktop. People bought PC at home so they could take their work home.
Linux will make headway into the corporate desktop in the next couple of years. The workers will soon install linux at home and the people who make hardware will start writing drivers for linux.
If I guy just wants to get to the supermarket but can't tell the difference between a car and a truck, or between a stickshift and an automatic then he is stupid.
It's not enough to "just want ot get your work done". 90% of getting your work done is knowing how to use your tools.
Anybody who is trying to get computer work done but does not care about the OS is stupid and should immediately be fired.
Yes but can we pump them with 49 bullets if they resist arrest, that's what I want to know.
I could see this being used in all kinds of mugging defenses. "Well you honor you see he was resisting a citizen's arrest. I saw him spitting on the sidewalk and when he refused to submit to arrest I had the beat the crap out of him"
"Can anyone tell me why ChoicePoint never did any deeper background checks on their clients knowing full well that identity theft is at an all time high?"
Because it would cost money that's why. The only reason you know what happened is because the left wing hippies in california passed a law that holds businesses sort of kind of responsible.
Businesses have no morals or conscience. They don't care about you. It's up to you (through your govt) to make sure the businesses don't run amok.
Where we work the exchange admins (yes we have multiple admins to make sure the email server is working) have turned off IMAP. It's a security problem they say, MAPI and DAV is much safer they claim. I asked one them about IMAP over SSL and he just shrugged.
I honestly think people like outlook because they haven't ever used anything else.
I am forced to use outlook 2003 at work and it is by far the worst email and calender client I have ver used (except maybe for mail.app).
Evolution kicks outlook from here to sunday in virtually every respect and it connects to exchange flawlessly. If it ran on windows I would install it on my work mandated windows box and never touch outlook again.
They hired a deputy CIO who did not have a degree. More accurately she had a degree from on a non accredited diploma mill check it out it looks like a church.
Normally I'd have no problems with a deputy CIO not having a degree but apparently the dept of homeland security did not check out their deputy CIO carefully enough and now they had to "put her on leave".
Now we find out they are putting the fox in charge of the hen house.
Something is seriously askew at this dept. How can we trust these guys to safeguard our country when they have shown such awful judgement?
The message is simple. Crime pays. If you commit crimes and make lots of money in the process it's A-O-K.
Go tell your kids that before you tuck them into bed.
Nafta is not a treaty, it was passed by a simple majority.

All that is great if you have a patient and understanding management/customer.
If you are working for a "I need this by tommorow" kind of guy all that flies out the window.
The point is that project management is not an end in itself. It's simply a means to an end.
ITIL concentrates on the end, leaving the means to you (and your certified ITIL consultant of course).

Basketball players have described being in the zone where the basket seems huge and their averages skyrocket for a game.
I don't think it makes any sense to deny that a basketball player may get a hot hand and have an occational exceptional game. We have all seen it.
I don't know if it's true or not but supposedly when Freud read Marx he is said to have muttered "it will never work, people are just not that good".

It's not a fair world. In this world choicepoint is one of most politically connected companies in the world and nothing will happen to them.
