    One word. Server.

Sure you can use macosx as a server but it's shall we say quixotic. Try getting a decent build of LAMP with an array of PHP modules and you'll see what I mean. Most linux distributions have some sort of a packaging system that makes that process relatively smooth. Mac has no such thing. There is darwinports but it does not resolve dependencies (really!). Fink is incomplete, pkgsource is iffy and out dated and neither one fits into the macosx file hierarchy. COmbine that with quirky installs of perl and python and you have a recipe for disaster.

If you want a g5 as a server you'll probably be happier with netbsd or linux (too bad freebsd does not support it).

BTW anybody use debian ppc on a g5? I'd like to know what your opinion is.

All fine and dandy but where do I get php with freetds? Certainly not from apple. Apparently not from darwinports, fink, or pkgsrc either.

Apple is ignoring packages and decent development IDEs hoping that other people do the work for them. So far it's not working all that great.

I just don't think they care all that much. Not about the developers and not about their customers.

Too bad Xcode is only good for objective C. When using java it's a total piece of crap.

If apple was serious about developers they would write a first class eclipse plug in instead of sitting idly by while the wolips project limps along.

While I am at it how about a decent package system? Darwinports does not even resolve dependencies. Fink and pkgsrc both live in their own hierarchies and don't hold a candle in terms of number of packages to their counterparts in debian and freebsd.

Apple is doing some things great but they are missing the boat on others. Unfortunately they have a culture of not really listening to their developers or customers.

Apple does things their way, they'll get along with you just fine as soon as you realize they are god.

Actually it's not. The crucial difference is that MS is a corporation whereas OSS is a movement. Most movements are cult like in the sense that they are based on shared ideals and values.

I find it odd that a corporation has cult like following while I don't find anything odd about the open source movement having cult like qualities.

Bill Gates is apparently a very prophetic figure to inspire such a cult of personality.

Like I said, harleys are fashion accesories not bikes. I bet you have a closet full of harley shirts and leathers too am I right?

BTW in no way, shape, or form are harleys cool. They are technologically obsolete, bad handling, heavy as all hell, slow and overpriced. Any BMW will run rings around it, any japanese bike will be more comfortable, perform better, get better milage and cost less and be more fun to ride.

If they were really nice people they would not get the loudest bike on the market and ride it when people are settled in for the night.

There is a reason why harleys are loud. People who buy harleys want the loudest most obnoxious bike on the market because they believe it makes them macho and impresses the girls (as the parent poster stated). For some reason the obnoxiously loud sound a harley makes is comforting to them and they don't give a fuck about anybody else who might be near.

Compare your typical BMW rider to your typical harley rider and see which one is polite and nice. Both bikes cost about the same and yet a completely different class of people ride them.

Why do you think that is?
