  1. PhD means a single-minded goal... on Google's Ph.D. Advantage · · Score: -1
PhD just means you spent an incredible amount of time in a narrow pursuit.

A PhD can NEVER be a entrepreneur. He/She is too straightjacketed brainy fellow who knows the BEST solution to a specific problem.
A PhD in Computer Science may be a wing of CS (Encryption, Chip Design, etc) in which she is a king. Take them out of the area and put them... let's say work on configuring W2K for a proxy Server and they will fail miserably.

PhD do NOT have presence of mind and adaptability and would never fit into a take-risk venture.

If google wants to venture out of search business into other arenas, it needs to hire more jack-of-all trades guys and not PhDs.
BTW, i did not rant against PhD, George Soros words were the ones i quoted above.

Salaries in india have stagnated but still comfortable. According to Parity Rates indians are paid $3500/- average per month in a city like Mumbai where living costs along take $2000 and taxman takes the rest. This lives you with nothing to spend on food and makes you depend on campus canteens in offices. And there are other people managers, project managers and morons who make the equivalent of $6000/month and enjoy a lifestyle like cleopatra and driving slaves to work to death. I had worked on a deathmarch project which involved working for 72 hrs at a stretch for 9 months without holidays (not even for Diwali which is like christmas here). My project manager was a wonderful guy who used to work from home. He used to call us from his home on sunday aft.noons to see whether we are working. And he got a promotion to a VP after we finished the project. And us: we got ourselves new jobs. He: has changed jobs now and works day-night shifts for his boss. Sweet Revenge.

Your statement that you can do everything on Linux that you can do on Windows & Office can itself is a proof that Windows is necessary.

Iam not supporting WIndows & MSFT, but they set standards that others including Linux follow. Why else would Linux want to "emulate" windows desktop (and fail...)

In theory what you say will be right. Like socialism. In reality each company will strive to become a monopoly publishing its own standards and divide the industry in to a thousand fragments. DO you remember the days of Wordstar, DR-DOS, Wordperfect, Lotus, etc?

You can't open one file in another because they were closed specs.

Humans and especially companies are not so enlightened as to work for the benefit of consumers. They exist to create wealth, and the best way to create wealth need not be in consumer's interest.

That is why you still can't open a Mac executable in Windows or vice-versa. If Mac and Linux were so "open" and consumer-friendly, they would have long allowed competitors access to their propreitary stuff...
