OK re-learnt something. Registry is not vital then. But what language or environment do you program in? - and if you do a search on the registry for the name of your application (say Foobar) would any instance show up?

This is merely a technical curiosity now. Can an application be completely detached from the Registry in Windows? Or does it need at least one reference - so that double clicking fires-it? Or a reference so that some icon is attributed to it? .. etc

Been a real long time; and am losing my knowledge of Win32 rapidly.

As far as my receding Win32 knowledge goes - I thought even the simplest of DLL's would have to be registered in the registry. Wether it is possible to have a program running without touching the Registry at all -- that I don't know; but my guess would be yes. I haven't programmed in Windows for years now. But I remember that even "light" applications like "Mirc" touches the registry.

That feels pretty "all-encompassing" for me.

Usually the accompaying .ini files you get are for exposing some of the configuration edittable under notepad for greater convenience. Noone wants to fire up regedit to change trivial settings like game-modes .. etc.

Linux is not hard for beginners to use.

I've installed Linux Desktop on laptops belonging to people that doesn't even know what an operating system is - and they got on well.

Now if you wanted to say Linux is hard to administer.

They yes, you are completely right.

If we get pre-built desktop system with Linux installed with all the compatible peripherals .. then I am of the feeling Linux is actually easier and less intrusive.

When you get a machine optimized for Windows, non-compliant BIOS, Linux-unfriendly video-card, broadcom wireless chipset, some Lexmark printer, some Canon Scanner .. some USB broadband modem, then you may find the prospect of installing Linux and trying to get everything as functional - as enjoyable as cutting your own eye-lids.

Not being a propagandist at all -- but one thing I find curious about non-tech users after they been exposed to Linux (for a while) .. is that they actually miss it once it's gone.

The Linux system obviously would have to be set in a very friendly way for that to happen - which is what I do to other people's dying PC when I am bored :)

not all software are meant for casual users - and I would agree on one thing - anyone trying to advertise Gimp as such, is not doing anyone any favours.
These days casual rhymes with MS-like interfaces, with Gimp it only takes following the manual to get into its new way of doing things. After which, the difference is pretty minimal. But trying Gimp by trial-and-error with no systematic approach will only lead to frustration.
User-friendliness is a matter of exposure. We all been playing on and off with Photoshop for almost a decade, no wonder it is "easier".
Maybe they should get a group of people never exposed to computers and graphic software - half are taught Gimp, half are taught Photoshop - and then compare results; which is the easiest to work with. I'd be curious to know the outcome.

Of course this shows that Gimp is a more technical tool geared towards professional use rather then Home & Family.

The secret with Gimp -> right click when in panic.
Under Linux, Gimp operations are lightning fast.

But I wouldn't insist trying - specially if you've already purchased Photoshop / Paint Shop and run MS Windows.

What is pretty ironically, is that a website which is compliant,
whose html tags are semantic and even offers greater accessibility scores very very high on MSN Searches.

Not for Google - for that, what matter is time, ever-changing content and a number of high PR links (but not too many links in case Google classes you as a spammer and throws your website into a running sandbox .. where frankly you will never resurface again) .. Such is the GoogleDance.

what these Linux distros really lacks is publicitity and marketting .. ie an excellent P.R Machine.
Microsoft can afford that, Apple too, contributors already spend much of their free time helping, they dont have the cash also.

So in short what Linux distros need are millionaire patron.
Ubuntu is an example of how much patronage matters.

Many tried in varies way - maybe you could try your version?

Linspire's approach is of Click to Install, run everything as root, offer interesting goodies such as iTunes, etc

Xandros which tries to appeal to the business man, hides even the terminal, if you are a techie, it is a difficult distro to work with. But non-techies find it a marvel.

Beatrix is probably the closest you've envisage, with but essential apps and very light and fast.

Puppy Linux approach is have it micro light weight in Ram, they don't strip the techie-stuff but add lots of tutorials, wizards and follow-throughs. I have to admit I liked it, its good for old machines too.

Yoper's approach is to get you up and ready where one-CD installs everything you might need and more - very fast. The community is very helpful and friendly. The idea is that the distro should be as multi-media ready as possible on things like plugin (which are short of impossible for a newcome to install).
Wonderful idea, but we need more help with that, like all free-distros specially - we need helpers, contributors, coders, packagers.

In the Linux community, the will is there, just the challenge and obstacle is very big. Drivers and hardwares primarily set for Windows machine and nothing else .. etc

What we all need is patronage, sponsorship.

What we need is what Apple, Microsoft + etc has:
money-money-money (even if its to pay for hosting our servers).

    Remember the saying: easier-said-than-done

So I would urge anyone that is really concerned to join a distro that matches your ideals and instead of criticizing offer help - there are many ways of doing that, learning being one.

If the idea of coding is really off-putting I found reading this pretty interesting and applicable to any open source project:
