It should be obvious that the "power user" as defined as a generally "results oriented non technical person i.e a "tallented accounts clerk or CPA" is the person that is going to have the most issues and conflicts with any migration from one tool to another as they have the greatest degree of adaptation to do. These persons "know the tool" as it relates to the process more than they know how the process relates to the tool. It's a matter of direction of inspection proportional to the scope of the individuals relationship to the context in which the process is performed. These are the persons that are most in need of instruction in the use of the new tool.
These "power users", in general, are persons with adaptive tendencies that readily internalise a specific set of rules to engender a specific result or set of results that they have been given or taken ownership of. When given a new tool intended to be used in generating the same results that uses a different though parallel set of rules rather than starting the intensive adaptive process over from the begining will usually first try to apply the rule set from the the tool the have mastered and, when differences are encountered, make adjustments to the variations in the rules believing that due to the parallel nature of the the rules that there will be a significantly large congruency in them that this will be the most facile process of adaptation. They are generally incorrect and become frustrated and resentful of the new tool and consider differences in the tools to be defects because they do not conform to their habits.
This is just none of the more visable of the propaganda pieces being scattered about by the various net inrastructure holders in an attempt to sway opinion and to garner support for their desire to channelise the net.

is an is an egregiously inappropriate use of technology and only makes fraud easier by increasing the opacity of the system. It is rather like using a remote control laser scalpel to do pedicures and the use of paper reciepts from the computer are like welding a pair of cuticle scissors to the laser scalple, utterly absurd and useless. They will never be used, and are just an added coplexity and another avenue for manipulation.
There are only three kinds of people that accept "electronic voting systems".
1) Those that develop and manufacture them (jobs and profit!, (and control where they overlap with #3 below)) as well as those that are simply enamoured of the technological challenge to make it work even though there is NO compelling reason for applying any technology more complex than a paper ballot and a pen to this particular problem.
2) Those who are ignorant enough to believe that "computers can't lie so this must be better, besides it's so much easier to use than wielding a pen or a punch, besides it's prettier and so modern. Also those that just blindly trust the system and go along with "whatever".
3) The people who realise that not only does increased automation reduce the number of people involved in the process and therefore the number of people with an interest in the process but that overt or covert control of the system (now easier becuase of the concentration of control) not only guarantees their success in elections, they can present it both as a means to correct the abuses of the previous system that were so problematic in past elections (without mentioning that the prior/current system is more difficult and costly to manipulate) and as opportunities to most of the people in #1 above.
Yes people can stuff ballot boxes, and vote from the grave etc. with paper ballots. But with paper ballots and physical counts, the electorate must be more involved in the process and oversight. Simplicity in the system is essential for there to be any sembelance of transparancy.
I visit and read non-US and non-English sites numerous times every day.
Mostly German French Spanish and Italian as these are the languages in which I sufficient fluency as to not need Babelfish et al.
Regionalized Internet is a BAD BAD BAD idea.
This one is available for ~USD300 a bit more than you wanted to spend but well worth it. It can do contact or thermal, is compact, durable and very configurable.
I'm amazed at how naïve some of us are with respect to the machinations of enterprise.
Yes, they live in a different universe and they have just found a new tool to use is all, one that will reduce the risk of doing business and give them an edge over their competitors.
In their world ethics and "the right thing" is for weenies and grannies. Marinating a good public face is the job of the PR department. A conscience can only interfere with ones ability to exploit the resources at hand. Revenue is just the way that the score is kept in the BIG GAME. If you are a player in this game all non-players (consumers) are only things to be used like an ashtray or an ear swab.
Advertising/Marketing is the propaganda and espionage arm of business, it is a very big cost center for many but it is also a great source of revenue if it is done well. Until now the espionage (market analysis/consumer profiling etc.) was mostly benign (increasingly not so),crude and rudimentary, using tools like focus groups , sales data from "discount" cards in supermarkets and gleaning data from POS / credit purchase cross-references (usually illegal but still done). Now it is possible to get direct access to the habits and preferences of (Great BIG Number here) individuals. This enables micro-targeted marketing, allowing for appropriately adjusted production allowing for stricter inventory control and an enhanced profit ratio and the ability to "innovate" within a set of parameters that reduce the risk of failed new product offerings.
It's just bisiness and it give me the boak !!!!!!!!!!!!!
and start over. SQl is an abomination. Even well constructed SQL is an UGLY, syntacticly obscene, maintenance pain. Code to generate SQL is usually pretty nasty too bahhhh...

Just posting this story probably puts me on their radar.
