There was one pirate in the story, but he was characterized as quite a narcissistic asshole (though irresistible to the main character), and most of the people in the reclusive society of "doers" did not approve of his methods.
I never thought of Ragnar Danneskjöld as a narcissistic asshole. Their disapproval of his methods has more to do with his safety than the injuries he might inflict on others.
In the US, the tuition that undergraduates pay may be much more than the universities spend on them, particularly for undergraduates taking large lecture courses.
For the system to function, it has to place trust in a group of people at some point.
How much trust do we have to put in them? Or do you mean faith?
If the police can't be trusted, then they can't do their job.
If we don't trust the police, then telling us that they require our trust is not going to convince us to give it. If we can't trust the the police, then perhaps we need new police.
So even if they do their job poorly, and with frequent abuses, the system will tolerate this because the system depends on the assumption that they can be trusted (regardless of whether they can or not). By arguing about whether or not there are safeguards against police brutality, or legal recourses, or any of that, you're sidestepping the critical issue: At some point, you have to trust them.
And you are sidestepping another issue. At some point on the road to a police state, you have to stop trusting them. If the system requires that trust, then perhaps we should discard the system.
If the W3C can't produce a browser that follows its own standards, isn't that a problem? Might that be an indication that its own standards are too difficult to implement?

Except that then Cardinal Ratzinger used his position in that office to encourage bishops not to report pedophile priests to secular authorities, and he did so on the orders of John Paul II. That the Church performs good works is not a Get_Out_of_jail_Free card.
As fot the historical role of the Church, some would blame it for causing the collapse of the Epire in the first place. And even if Europe would have fragmented in the absence of the Church, would that have been worse? And to say that Galileo's case is too stereotypical doesn't help your case. Galileo may have been "restricted a little bit", but Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake, and Hypatia was brutally murdered with the connivance of the Church.
Get some human decency!
Do you expect human decency on Slashdot?

My cognition of a fact is an idea; the fact is not an idea. Are you saying that if I stopped thinking about my laptop, it would disappear?
And you are also a minority among Slashdot posters.
I think you could spend much less money just getting more meat doctors into the bush.
But how gynecologists do you need?
The slashdot posting clearly said that it was a Massachusetts high school, and Beverly Hills (at least the famous one) is not in Massachusetts.
Is that different from the Church of GNU Emacs?
The GP didn't say that open-source companies were more profitable than closed-source companies, only that there is value in open source.

At what distance?

In the US at least, requiring such an oath would violate the free exercise clause of the First Amendment.
That's larger than my emacs installation, and I have three versions.

So Amaya is similar to a computer built from evaluation kits and reference boards? Isn't that what the GP is saying?
And where do you work?

Which is why I doubted the OP's ability to do exact, real, computable math.
It also could have a chilling effect not only on other climate scientists
But how would this chilling effect affect global warming?
And yet you were able to represent this value with only 4 characters.
Then I didn't need continued fractions or computer algebra, did I?
Exact computable real arithmetic? So what is pi+e? An exact irrational number requires infinitely many integers to represent it.
Isn't setting the respawn to reboot a bad idea? Or is my sarcasm detector malfunctioning?
But how often do you have to boot up Linux? Doesn't it just keep running?
What is 98,000,000 miles away from the Earth? The Sun is at most 94,500,000 miles away.
