Is a new language really what we were waiting for ? I seriously doubt it. Existing languages already do, or are capable to do, the most exotic things for us. I look at it from a software architect's viewpoint: what we need is not yet another language, we need new design and programming paradigms. Like, for example, people in the place I currently work for reacted enthusiastically upon the BDD ( Behaviour-Driven Design ) idea; most of the somewhat older engineers had never heard of it. We need new ways and schools of thought, resulting into what already happened and has been happening in other engineering domains for a long time: the hiding of complexity. IMHO, Dao does not contribute toward this goal. Certainly, as in intellectual and engineering exercise, the creation of a new programming language is interesting. Nowadays, such compiler- / interpreter-construction exercises are within the reach of any graduate student. It does not, however, reach into the heart of many of the "wicked problems" with which engineers in real life are confronted.
You can not stay in most european hostels for more than two weeks in a row. If you stay for longer, you would be considered by most european governments as some sort of settler. Then, european hostels are loud places: drunken teenagers, groups of loud Asian travellers, Brits looking for a fight... You'd rather be looking for the "pension" type of place. Most are family-run houses, quiet and simple.
For having lived here, now, for almost exactly three and a half years, I am strongly suspecting that a majority of Austrians would answer with a loud "NO ! Not worth it !" to your question.... This country is quite clean, almost as clean as Switzerland and Liechtenstein ( where they take it to absurdist levels ). Yes, Austrians simply agree to pay a bit more for electric power imported from Germany - they voted "no" on nuclear power long ago. I remember standing still, in my car, in a highway's emergency lane, waiting for the mechanic. It was truly remarkable: a highway without litter. Austria, simply Austria.
Nobody drinks from a lake river or stream anymore.
The entire city of Vienna, Austria - and that is: millions of people - drink from mountain streams, whose water is led to Vienna by aquaducts and pipes.
"We" as in "my generation": the engineers who are now 35 to 50. And this is what the place has become: a mostly commercialized place, a shopping mall peddling boredom against boredom. Where does this urge to vomit come from ?
The company I currently work for does this once a year, for all students wishing to participate. It is not a pitch at all, except for the fact that ( of course ) the coding / engineering problem is one directly related to the company's domain ( logistics, as it is ). The hackathons last for 8 hours, from 6 pm till 2 am. No recruiting done, no company pressure, just for the pleasure of solving problems. Lots of drinks and food help, as well as a quiet environment. When the hackathon is over, there is free beer and pizza till 5 am. Always a great success, I am told....
The tables in the reading and studying rooms of the ONB ( Austrian National Library ) all have power outlets concealed under their tops. The tables look like plain, solid wood to the casual stroller-by. Just reach to your left when sitting at one of the pre-indicated places, and you'll find one.
This thread is quite a nice practical demonstration that there are, indeed, adults who struggle with basic arithmetic, Whether or not the above Slashtards are healthy remains to be established.....
I don't know what is so hard about it, but the comments above your post speak volumes' worth of utter nonsense. People simply don't get, or may they don't want to get it. Why, dunno....
And still, massive numbers of people will deny both the effect ( melting of the ice cap ) and the cause ( global warming ), even when faced with measurable, reproducible results.
Tyson has his own show, now. Nothing against the man, and I can really laugh when he is being funny - but isn't this a bit over the top ? OTOH, popularizing science is a great and lofty goal...
The ruling al-Saud family will soon have to come with a follow-up for the current king. In the same time, a complete army of foreign experts & technicians is required to keep the entire Saudi infrastructure ( telco, roads, water supply, power generation ) running. Moreover, the Saudi government is continuously spying upon its citizens, as a habit. Women are slowly beginning to protest against the enormous discrimination and contempt they live under.
All of this taken together mixes up quite explosively. Mark my words: 25 years from now, Saudi Arabia as we know it will have gone down
I have mod points available, for once, and will mod you up. Yes, I know - that will obliterate this very post. So what ? What you said is SO well said.
Never seen them awarded. Baked air, most of the time. YMMV, though.

Or if only there was a way to filter the water (they don't already filter it?
In much of Germany, the water in the brewers' wells is so pure, they do not need to filter it.

At least here in Europe: a company won't get me if there is no free fucking coffee. I drink about 10 cups of it per day. No coffee == no work. Period.
This is the stuff the future is made off. Only thing still missing: flying cars. WTG !!

Something is wrong with either your cardinals or with your ordinals.
"News for nerds, stuff that matters". Is this news ? Does this stuff matter ? Just askin'....

. Meters and kilometers are strait-line measures, and can only approximate distance on Earth (unless you want to bore through the earth).
Which is bollocks. The one is not more "curved" than the other. Both can be used to measure distance on either flat ( Euclidean ) or curved surfaces.
reproducible: the measurements. Sorry for that.
And still, massive numbers of people will deny both the effect ( melting of the ice cap ) and the cause ( global warming ), even when faced with measurable, reproducible results.
Looks more and more like "crazy" concepts such as the Alcubierre drive will, soon, actually be needed.
How do you know that the planet, or rather: the life forms on it, did not already discover us ?

There, I said it.

Just saw one of my colleagues has some ubuntu under his shoe....
