Steve Jobs would never let "pirates" have his OS. I honestly think he would send out an update to fry every PC that was running OSX even if it meant Apple going out of business.
And anyway, when you say "A lot of people buy boxed distros", just how many is alot? Because I doubt it's enough. Not to mention the fact that Apple would not be able to provide any type of support. People would be running with hacked drivers on their Pentium II boxes and telling all their geek friends how unstable OSX is.
No, Apple would sell a few copies, then it would show up on file sharing networks and Apple would make $0. I say this because only more technical people would ever think of installing an OS,and a very large percentage of those people would be likely to pirate the OS instead of paying $200 for an unsuported product (myself included). Thats not to say that I wouldn't like to run OSX on my A64 machine, but it would be a poor business decision.
Here's my wild theory.
Apple had MS sign that 5 year Office agreement to give them time.
In the next couple of years Apple is going to come out with an OS update (like 10.6), in which a major feature is some kind of virtualization software. Think VirtualPC on steroids. This would allow Mac users to run Windows.exe files just like native Mac apps. The 5 year agreement will allow transition time for users on older OS versions. If not for the 5 year agreement MS would drop MacOffice the second they heard about the new Windows-compatibility software. Now however, MS will have to continue making software for legacy users while they find Apple in a position to start taking market share from Windows.
I for one will not be buying an HDTV until they come down in price to near what regular TVs are now. And I'm guessing that by that time there will be a new Gen of consoles out.
Yes the Apple hardware is cheaper than they sell it for, but the OS is worth more than they sell it for. The profit from hardware sales allows for thier huge R&D budget, without which OSX would suck. Plus you have to allow a little of the extra price for the innovative and usually high quality cases that Apple designs.
Corperations have trained us well. We have come to think that right or wrong doesn't apply to business. If the companys are doing whats right for the stock holders then thats all that matters.
What precisely is it that we need for a desktop GUI that isn't already in KDE and/or Gnome? 3D alpha-transparency spinners? Corona effects for the "glint" off metallic 3D lettering?
It's not about being able to do alpha-transparency, it's about ease of use. Sure OSX looks pretty, but its main draw is how easy it is for anyone (even a computer illiterate) to get something done on the machine. That is what I would like to see in a new GoogleOS, or any new OS for that matter. I don't understand why Apple is the only one who can manage this sort of thing.

To me there are arguments for both sides. I don't like the idea of MS putting everyone out of buisness because they include every possible app with windows. But I also would like to have a functional, usefull computer without having to install a hundred different programs. I mean, an argument can be made that MS should only ship the core of the OS since there are other options out there for almost every component of Windows, but I wouldn't want to pay for that.
Why don't you just pirate the music? The artists would get the same amount of money that way, and you wouldn't have to worry about who in Russia is getting your money.
I'm not talking about the guts. Apple isn't a hard drive manufacturer any more than they are a cpu manufacturer. I was refering to the quality and thought that they put into thier computer cases, laptop shells, keyboards, etc. You pick up a PowerBook and it has a high quality feel, like it's put together better than PC laptops. It's like old cast iron hand tools that you used to get in the 40's compared to the crap they make today, it's all about the "feel".
I don't know about anyone else, but I don't really have any love for Apple, I just love thier computers. I think that OSX is the slickest, most well designed OS you can get, and no one can deny the build quality and attention to detail that goes into Apple hardware.
But yeah, other than that they are just like any other company, just out to make a profit.

Exactly. Post-Jobs Apple will only be a shadow of it's current self.
I think we're going to see Intel own the next generation of processors the way AMD owned this one.
And the answer is no.
I hope it doesn't have an iPod dock integrated. Apple changes thier iPod dock designs more often than I change my underwear.

This should have been from the all your internet are belong to us dept.
Why should it affect it at all? Just because Apple used FreeBSD code in OSX doesn't mean that they care what changes FreeBSD makes later on.

I couldn't decide between modding you funny and offtopic, so I decided to post a reply instead. Just consider your post modded +1 Sideways.
Should I be gratefull or offended that my post was modded funny even though I had no intention of it being funny? :)
Your safe. Not because Adium can't be compromised, but because no one cares enough to do it.
This isn't going to be a laptop class chip, when it comes out it will be better suited to herald the comeback of the Newton.
It will now stand for iTunes Media Store.
What, with no native programs to run on it?
Maybe a little off topic, but I've always wondered what Linus runs on his computer.

I'd like to see Elektroplankton for the Revolution.
