Poor Google. U probably need to tell gmail about this. As far as I know , gmail uses activeX scripts for IE and JS for mozilla.
you need to hang yourself from your server rack with a cat5 cable Anyway we can expect all the pigeonrank pigeons working with gmail hanging from cat 5 cables... Brings a new meaning to the the cat ate the pigeon
I used enlightment for a couple of years before switching to kde since a year . I have to say that E was a really intuitive and lightweight WM ( I had a really slow computer then.. switched to kde after geting a better machine) . Anyone out there who use E as their primary WM on resonably new machines ??
Unused !! you must be crazy . My bookmarks toolbar goes there. May be u have a huge monitor and dont care abt destop space but since I run a measly 2048x1780 on my tiny 21inch pda I do need to be stingy abt every pixel. Anyway do try keeping the bookmarks toolbar next to the menu.. it does save space.
yep , u are right. But even then , they did'nt really do anything to harm the university(like stealing something) and they were jounalists so their publishing in the newspaper was to be expected. What I think is , if some one points out that you are wrong (though publicly and rudely) u shud just accept it gracefully and thank that guy. Especially if it is going to save the univ further embarassment And I wasnt wrong in the above analogy... I will sue u:)
Like social security numbers, health information, whether the student is seeing the school shrink, grades (any teacher's temp internet files), scholarship information...
What he meant (and thats true in my school too) is that all this info is guarded with much greater care and at a different level of security. The lan accounts in the lab ( and also the departmental email.. diskspace accounts) are not really considered high security. I mean I am a grad student and there isnt really anyone who would be interested in my latest results (and if he is I would gladly send him all my files:) And the departmental emails are also primaraily used for the college junk mails.
. Did it ever occur to you that... someone might actually send mail while pretending to be someone else!!! I guess u have never used a smtp server which allows email address spoofing (most do)
So next time u are in UK and you see someone forgetting to lock his door or forgetting his bag beware before you go and tell him... U could be a possible housebreaker or a purse snatcher. Come on guys this a couple of collge students finding a flaw in their universities system which may compromise their privacy and bang.... they get punished !!! Ok ok they went for some publicity but shouldnt Oxford just say thanks and bash/change/think abt their network administration
SCO's principal argument in opposition to AutoZone's motion is that it will suffer irreparable harm if the case is stayed.
Well I thought they loved that.... From the track record they have of suing people. And isnt it impossible for an almost dead company to suffer more harm ? Oh..I get it.. The SCO executives when looking for new jobs say "We almost won, but the court stayed the case and we suffered irreparable harm"
Mod parent down guys and think before u mod something informative.
What is the matter with the mods. This is a troll, try installing it and see. Common Even historically secure browsers like Mozilla Firefox 0.9.2 with Adblock and Flashblock were foiled by it. is laughable. Search companion may later sure be a fertile ground for spyware but right now atleast it is not.
there are half a dozen places that sell computers, none of them carry any macs or anything that doesn't have XP on them. Let me see, there's an office despot, walmart , a k-mart, and three whitebox shops Maybe you did not really look around. As far as I can remember Walmart does sell computers with the Sun Java Desktop System (which looks like XP so maybe u got confused or maybe Walmart doesnt sell them everywhere)

Anatomy of a 419 scam
By Team Register
Published Friday 9th July 2004 13:06 GMT
Exclusive Regular readers will be familiar with our ongoing coverage of variations on the 419 advance fee fraud scam. Occasionally, we report on people who have been suckered by the promise of riches beyond the wildest dreams of avarice - and duly fleeced for their trouble.
Two oft-posed question from readers are "how could they be so stupid?", and "surely everyone is aware of these scams by now?" Indeed, we have been accused in the past of carrying too much 419 coverage.
Sadly, though, it's clear that the 419ers continue to operate with considerable success. The following is an account of how one US citizen (we have called him DG) recently lost $1,000 to a UK-based 419 outfit who used a combination of plausible correspondence, phone calls and a fake bank website to reel in their victim. We have appended the full email correspondence between DG and the 419 gang to the end of this article.
On 22 June 2004, DG transferred his last $1,000 via Western Union to an unknown location within the UK. He believed that the money would be used to set up an account with United Mercantile Credit & Investment Bank (UMCIB) in London into which $8m would then be transferred.
The illicit funds were courtesy of one Moser Gilmore, who had sadly died intestate and left the booty sitting around in a European bank, just waiting for a willing partner to claim his share of the loot. The 419ers initially contacted DG purporting to be investigators looking for Gilmore's relatives - a classic approach.
DG took the bait and offered himself as a willing accomplice in the transfer of the funds. Inconveniently, though, UMCIB required an initial deposit of $8,000 to activate DG's account. DG could not himself raise the required funds but - believing that one of his "partners" - was willing to make up the difference - he duly parted with $1,000.
Shortly thereafter, DG received confirmation from his personal "Realtionship Manager" at UMCIB - James Cole - that the $8m was resting in his account. All he now had to do was access it .
DG found this rather more difficult than he had expected, since he was unable to log in to UMCIB's e-banking system. And no wonder, because UMCIB is, of course, a bogus bank. Its website gives 232 Great Eastern Street, London EC2 as its location. The Royal Mail lists no such address and our man on the spot confirms that the street numbers end at 82. Neither is UMCIB registered with the Financial Services Authority.
The bank's blurb makes entertaining reading:
About UCMIB
Since 1994, UMCIB has constantly shown an ability to work as a financial partner and confidante to Heads of States, Diplomats, Businesses, Prominent Individuals, Companies, Conglomerates and Governments worldwide.
Using our specialised London offices and various affiliate offices across Europe, we are well equipped and positioned to meet the international banking needs of our clients offering them utmost confidentiality and privacy for both personal and tax purposes.
Clients interests are our paramount concern.
Clients of UMCIB, do not require authorisation under the Financial services and Markets Act 2000 and as such are entitled and qualify for the Financial services Compensation scheme. Copies of the banks last audited reports are available to clients only and are sent to you via secure courier in your welcome pack containing your account information cards, pin and cheque books.
We offer our clients the use of our exclusive debit cards and ATM cards in over 50 Countries worldwide and access to over 50,000 ATM machines globally.
Credit facilities may be provided but are subject to status and available to customers/account holders only.
We would only deal with a nominated attorney/next of kin of our clients, we do not entertain third party discussions on or about our clients from any Individual or organisation.
All very reassuring.
Interestingly, www.umcib.com is registered to one "Simon Williams" at an address
He is a a contract computer programmer and I guess looking out for jobs and he posts his resume on his (very stable.. no/.ing yet !!)site as a DOC file ??? Common this isnt a medical convention where people appreciate docs. The last ver of Word I used (maybe 2000) had a save as html option. Atleast a 10 mb html ( u know with all the extra MS tags and crap) file would be better than a doc if u really want people to read your stuff.

Rickford's writeup is not on why GNOME is better than KDE. He writes on Why I like Gnome better He doesnt really make any claims just says why he likes somethings. Infact he says Just to be fair, however, I should state that KDE is no dog. In fact, the first Linux desktop environment I used was KDE, and it was sufficiently impressive to reel me into the Linux world for good. and concludes the article with Enjoy finding out which environment is best for you by playing around - that's half the fun, after all. Which to me doesnt seem like KDE bashing at all.

All of us working at google totally agree with you. As a token of our agreemennt and thnaks we have decided to extend you an invitation for a new type of an email account. You get a useful 2Mb instead of a measly 1Gb account space. And unlike the self proclaimed geeks who claim they beta test the Gmail software and dont even get a single bug after 4 months of use, we promise that you will be using a webmail program which will be eternally buggy. Also if you sign up really soon(within the next 300 years) you will get a daily advertisement for penis enlargement totally free !!!!!

I got a better deal, he said he would trasfer some of his (real life) Karma on to my Slashdot account.
Old jungle saying -- 10 points of Karma( I'm hoping that the Lama has been good recently) is worth 100 moments of perfect clarity( We do have alcohol for clarity right)
.... A company patented a particular algorithm a few years ago which essentially stopped all research in that direction. So researchers started looking at different classes of alternative algorithms and now have come up with a much better class of algorithms than the patented one - basically nobody uses the patented one anymore. Now, had the company not been so greedy they could have seen further development of their (very promising at the time) algorithm
Though of course it wouldnt have remained their algorithm any more. (At least not in a money making sense..which is the sense that stock holders care the most about)
The article says Not all optical media is vulnerable. The rewritable variants (RW) use metallic materials that change the phase of the light, rather than light-sensitive dyes. Commercial magneto-optical and ultra-density optical systems are different too. Do they mean to say that CD RW's are resistant to aging compared to CD-Rs ??
I always thought that CD-R s are more reliable than the RW's and genrally back up my data to CDRs ( and of course CDRW are more expensive)
How about offering to send your payload outside the solar system like the Voyegeur.
You can send your buisness card so that when he aliens arrive to conquer earth you could handle all their real estate needs. Even better if there is someone you really hate just send a Windows CD with his name and address on it...

What about Marvin ?? He should be on it. He always reminds me of so many people I actually know
Wow !! Thats neat
I mean its cool that you can actually draw a smiling bunny. Anything cheerful I try to sketch looks like a mix of an armadillo and a Vogon.
Also, several new teams are entering, among them Stanford, and Florida Tech. Should be a very interesting Challenge next year!"
Its actually University of Florida and not Florida tech.
