I'm guessing that Intel still plans on making a 4 Ghz P4 chip at some point in the future...

  3. Copy-protection on Sony Launches DVD-Burning Appliance · · Score: 5, Insightful

No word yet if it will record straight from your television, or from your DVD Player to circumvent copy-protection. *wink*

Software that manages copyright ownership (or any other software for that matter) doesn't require a PC to be ran. I'd guess that Sony, which has large interests in the motion picture and music industries, has some kind of copy protection with this - with or without a PC.

    You have to do:

    God I hate VBScript.

On another note, how much money does Microsoft stand to make from this? If they're running VBScript, they're using Windows (I suppose they could use DOS, but I doubt they do) - I would imagine MS makes quite a bit when hundreds of thousands of these voting machines all need a copy of Windows.

Do you turn off your displays when you leave the office? My coworkers always leave them on, and it drives me nuts.

OTOH, I have no problems leaving my CPU running - it takes long enough to boot up that I'm willing to contribute to global warming.

Also, many OEM and corporate PCs share CD Keys, and there's really no way Microsoft can tell how many PCs the software is licensend on.

Don't you think MS keeps track of which keys can be duplicated and which ones can't? It's not like they just randomly generate them and ship them out the door without any record.

This would be really slick for storm-chasing. Often times you find yourself in the middle of [some flat state] taking pictures of a storm, and once you go home you may very well forget exactly where you were.

Also, I recently saw a TV show where they had to track down a killer based off of some digital pictures a murder victim had snapped shortly before getting killed. This technology would have made that murder much easier to solve... of course this probably has never happened in real life.

  13. Seeing Conditions on Exceptional Seeing At Dome C in Antarctica · · Score: 5, Informative

    What is "seeing"?

"Seeing" is a term that astronomers use to quantify the turbulence in the atmosphere and how it affects observations from the ground. The stars appear to twinkle because of the effect of this turbulence. In conditions of bad seeing, the stars appear to twinkle vigorously, and the images that you take with your telescope are blurry. In conditions of good seeing, the stars appear more stable, and you can take very sharp images.

You'd think they'd have a cooler word for that...

I started taking a programming class in high-school in 10th grade, where I learned basic C style syntax, as well as "how to think like a programmer," I really enjoyed it, so I started to teach myself new things. By the time I graduated high school, I was highly capable with PHP/MySQL. After seeing a website I developed with PHP/MySQL, I was offered a job at the college I was attending, where I do work with VBScript/Oracle. Additionally, I started playing with Linux on my own time, and now I'm starting to get interested in C++ again. I'll be a sophomore in college this fall.

If you start early, get a project you can focus your energy towards (mine was weather information), the rest comes naturally.

By the time I graduate I think I should be in pretty good shape.

I know that my high school dumped HP several years ago because they didn't offer as good of deals to the schools as TI did. My school could get one of the overhead projector adapters for 10 proofs of purchase from TI-83/86's, which was apparently enough to sway them to go with TI.

I've never seen an HP calculator being used by anyone - I usually see people using the TI-83 Plus, TI-86, and the rare TI-89.
