I just had a bit of a panic and cancelled my aTV order. I was able to fix quicktime on my Mini to play a52 audio, but it's a dealbreaker for the aTV if I can't pull the same trick.

I know that it *says* Intel Processor, but the iTV has a slightly iPod feel about it, especially the limited looking range of supported formats.

I'll probably dedicate a Mini and an AA960 to drive my HD (Component only - stupid WalMart), unless someone can tell me if I can get a52 audio to work on aTV.

Yes, there's so much stuff on a mac these days that you can't get to it all. Core Image funhouse, all the dev kits etc etc. I have Common Lisp (SBCL) and CLSQL and mySQL on mine.

If you need a laptop, get a basic MacBook and throw some more memory in it. The screen is great, and the machine seems pretty tough. The main bugs of discolored plastic and the random stops have been exorcised.

If you want to go cheap, get the base Mini. It's awesome. Runs Parallels, which in turn runs XP, Ubuntu, OLPC etc etc.

I installed from the alternate and my ThinkPad is running great. Even the wireless is working , though it needed some prodding of the /etc/network/interfaces file since it seems preferable to have the wireless card configured *prior* to ifup'ing it.

I didn't bother to read those links. Just downloaded SuperDuper and backed up my wife's MacBook, and my PowerBook to (separate) WD 250 Gig External USB/FW drives. It worked faultlessly, first time for both machines.

Both machines booted happily from the back-ups. I'm sure happy to have both machines backed-up.

It's not a clone either, since the backups are missing all the pre-linky goodness of OS X until you actually boot from them.

I was very happy to pay the $30 for SuperDuper.

I believe that we are possibly shaping up for a long overdue OS war, with obviously Windows XP being currently dominant, but with the possibility to move to similar Intel-based hardware, but with 3 radically different operating system choices.

In particular the re-training and hardware upgrade requirements for Vista and Office make it more likely that companies are going to say enough and start to move to OS X or Linux, now that both these operating systems present a reasonable alternative to the status quo.

    - Writing clear and commented code a junior developer could maintain (Developers will love you)
