I'm currently at a public school in Colorado and they just changed their policy on SSNs. Previously they were used for everything, but they changed as of this semester to using randomly generated #s instead. Of course, I had already changed mine and then paid $25 to get my ID card changed as well.:-)
That is because sheets look pretty weird with a brushed metal interface (want to see what I mean? hit Command-D). So they probably thought it would look better as a modal box.
Allowing applications to say "Hey Windows, I need to run as Administrator!"
But you see, on a Mac an application does just that. You have to import and then basically call on the SecurityAgent to ask the user for their admin password.
SecurityAgent then prompts the user and says that the application (pathname) wants your admin password.
The other key difference between Windows and Macs is that the applications' names actually mean something on a Mac. How is your grandmother going to know that allowing iexplore to use her Admin password is fine?
Yeah, he wants the DHCP service off. Oh wait, what if someone gets a DSL modem and doesn't have a clue about how to set a static address? Guess they have problems/
DNS client service, isn't that for making DNS lookups work? Anyone know?
The WebClient service is used in the.NET framework if you want to get to any website using your.NET app.
The author also wants the firewall to bother the user everytime anything goes in or out. Sorry, you can't do that to users who doesn't understand what those apps are. I just fixed a computer that had had the DHCP client denied access to the DHCP server because the guy who was clicking the buttons didn't know what the app was (and he shouldn't have to!).
First, anyone with physical access to the machine can reconfigure it and possibly destroy important files, whether intentionally or accidentally.
Um, can't anyone with physical access just use a magnet intentionally? I mean granted, I don't think it is a good idea to run as root on Unix, but still! I'm not for having users be Administrator on Windows (and especially against the Administrator having a blank password when you boot up in safe mode), but this guy is making up complaints against Microsoft.
JavaScript is enabled. (We would leave it disabled.)
Uh huh, and have tons of websites break (including GMail and other popular webmail sites).
Conclusion
I'm not a M$ fan by any stretch of the imagination (I use a Mac and highly recommend that other people get one when they ask me), but this isn't an article, just complaining that Microsoft doesn't turn off everything that makes their operating system semi-user friendly.
And at least at the university I work for, we did just that. No way we want to have peoples' computers get hosed just as the semester starts.:-/

You probably don't know it, but marketing is about giving people the product they want. Unfortunately many companies (and Microsoft is one of them) talk about marketing, but what they are really talking about is advertising.
<marketing drone>Actually, marketing is all about "adding customer value". So of course, we (Microsoft) are adding value by allowing our customers to more easily see whether their computer has been compromised yet."</marketing drone>
And yes, if you can't tell, I just took a marketing class, yes it was a waste of time, and yes I'll be poking fun at it for years.:-)
Precisely. At this point, although I've just started my business, if I need some software to make the business work better, I'll buy it. After all, you just knock it off of your revenue (and taxes) at the end of the year.
Which means that Apple may have another buyer of Apple Remote Desktop 2 soon.:-)
Actually, msconfig isn't as nice. It is handy for certain things, such as turning off all startup items to make sure that is the problem.
But most of the time, the run keys I want to get rid of need to be deleted, not turned off temporarily. So because I'm going to be in there anyway, I just use regedit.:-)
I fix this type of problem all the time. The best thing to do is to boot into Safe mode without networking and run SpyBot - Search and Destroy with the latest virus definitions. AdAware runs better and faster, but there are some types of adware out there (specifically Vx2) that seem to mess it up.
Then, go into the registry and have fun deleting run keys.:-/ And as mentioned, CWShredder takes stuff off that neither AdAware nor SpyBot do.

Golly, the amount of time Amit seems to spend messing around with the very low levels of Open Firmware seems insane! Imagine figuring out how to get a mouse to work solely to get his 'Tower of Hanoi' program to work nicer!:-)
in their right mind is going to trust their life to Microsoft? Thanks, but I think I'll pass.
Anyway, I don't trust the current system at all, and don't want ANY mandated system
:-)
It sure is nice finding someone else out there who agrees with me on this.

This has actually been out for, say, 1 month? At least? How is this news?

Good grief, what a bunch of FUD.

A military brat friend of mine was born in Osaka, Japan. He is not Japanese. He has no right to Japanese citizenship. He is American.
Same thing goes in Saudi Arabia. I was born there, but unless one of your parents are Saudi (which mine weren't) you can't become a citizen.
Especially after they have put so much effort into branding the Rendezvous name. But oh well, guess they don't have much choice.
Not only that, their kernal extension system already disables kernal extensions you don't need.
Where did you learn that? I've been wondering about that very question for a while.
Now all we need is for Cpanel to officialy support it and I'll be able to upgrade all my software to use it; finally ...
But you don't get it. The point is that you can use either HTML+JavaScript OR Interface Builder+Objective C (reference: Here and search for 'further extensible using Cocoa'.)
So while Konfabulator is cool, Dashboard should be MUCH better. And yes, I'll be paying for it.

Very nice pictures. Anyone else notice that this is Windows CE with Mac OS X scrollbars?
:-)
Uh-huh, show me real screen shots.
They also seek the K-12 Academic markets where it's hard to employ a full time network admin to set up Active Directory, Exchange Server, etc.
And they only charge $500 (educational price) for the unlimited-client version of 10.3 Server. Very nice.
There is no such word as incented :-(
My marketing teacher uses it all the time and it drives me bonkers.

I have never had the need to use my music on more than 3 computers simultaneously
You do know/remember that with iTunes 4.6 it is now 5 computers, right?
Other than that, right on and ditto.
So stop gloating already. :-)

Wait, you mean they vote at all? So that is why that jerk^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H Bush is in the White House!
