    If I were designing an OS for deaf individuals... I uh... wouldn't spend a lot of time on Music Players?

    It seems to me like a lack of eyesight would be a bigger barrier to computer usage.

    Why should someone have to code a webpage in order to have a blog?

    Should a user need to know how to install their operating system in order to use one?

    As slashdot geeks we sometimes get narrow minded, but there are different types of intelligence. Just because someone isn't a computer scientist doesnt mean they don't have something interesting to say.

    Where does it say that they will change wikipedia to fit in with KDE design? Nowhere? All right.

    Skype is a file-sharing application and that's used by millions of people. (Universities) are using file sharing as a way to disseminate research papers and other legitimate items. Getting away from centralized servers and going to peer-to-peer communications all across the map means the communications are faster and much more user-friendly. I will predict that within a number of years, most of the uses of file sharing are going to be legitimate.

    I think you mean Peer to Peer, not "File Sharing", which is one kind of P2P. Using Skype for internet telephony and downloading legit files from bittorrent are completely different things. The first is at risk from phone companies, the second is at risk from **AA organizations.

    Why is it still safer? Open Source / Freeware (no spyware) clients.

    Plus, even if you DO download a file that ends up being spyware, when you download the torrent from most sites, they allow you to give comments like "I FOUND SIXTEEN HUNDREN VIRUSES IN THIS TORRENT", and although some people lie, if people are complaining about stuff like that, you can usually guess that it is a spyware infested torrent.

    Of course, even this only matters when you download something containing an .exe or some such program. One program I did download asked me to install third party software... I quicky realized that the EULA was of a spyware company, asking me to waive all rights to privacy, and did not belong to the developing company.

    This is not geared towards people who want to play games, this is geared to those people who want to meet people, but don't like the bar scene. This is not aimed at the cheeto-stained keyboard users of /., it's for Joe Sixpack. The games they are playing include things like: "They run open-source Linux software and serve up games such as the Tetris-like Bloxx and Zillionaire, a trivia contest.", it is definitely NOT a LAN Party. The games are secondary to the environment it is creating.

    I can vouch for this, I'm using the RT2500 on my Averatec 3200 Laptop right now. Works beautifully, but the driver is a little buggy. OpenBSD supports it out of the box, which is neat. (K)Ubuntu forced me to install it manually (hard, when your only connection is wifi).

    I'm sure there must be a situations where PDAs using current technology must be useful, I'll even hazard a guess: mobile, local database access for doctors, engineers and stock controllers, but really that's an industrial application for a consumer product.

    Interestingly enough, the LiveDrive was originally made for Pfitzer (makers of Viagra), and the name comes from their magazine, LifeDrive. Internally, it was referred to as the Tungsten T6, I don't know why they're using the name outside of the models made for Pfizer...

    BBC.co.uk reports that UK cable firm Telewest has had almost one million email address blacklisted by an anti-spam firm.

    So... ISP allows spam zombies to run free on its network, anti-spam firm overreacts by putting entire network on blacklist.

    Is this really out of the ordinary? Weren't they doing this to US ISPs like Comcast until they started disconnecting zombie PCs?

    Is there anything really out of the ordinary here?

    It's worth noting that Intermix also runs the popular "networking" website MySpace. This site is used by lots of people, and many bands have pages set up on there. Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins fame even has a profile on there.

    Makes you wonder what they're doing with the information people put on there.

    They implemented both audio AND video capabilities, when gaim has just started whispering about possibly including it. It's only available in the Pro Version, but you get what you pay for.

    Windows only, other than that the only complaint I have is that it uses its own skin interface. I'd much rather have a native version, but you can usually find really nice skins to match Windows.

    I wonder how many people installed the beta, had problems, and now are just never going to install SP2?

    Installing it slipstreamed is really the only way to go. You're already going to have to back up all your data in case something goes wrong.

    Upgrading from XP->SP2 works just fine. Except for the fact that it backs everything up, allowing you to uninstall it. Why is this bad? Simply for space reasons. You have all that crap that you don't need backed up, wasting space. I'd much rather just start off with SP2 (and that's what I did.)

    I did have some trouble using some custom themes, they don't like the wireless configuration. I just use trial and error nowadays, because some don't like the slight changes, but theres always Windows Classic for peace of mind.
