"When it’s not on the highway, one of the humans inside will take the wheel."
Driving on highways is about as straight forward as driving gets. While neat, this doesn't seem as ambitions as autonomously driving through a city full of obstacles.
Why couldn't they start moving the files and calculate the total size in parallel? By the time they calculated the total size, they'd already have a speed benchmark.
You are not mistaken. My alma mater does this, and I graduated from the latter (SE). While my computer science peers were taking Operating Systems and Cryptography, I was taking Software Architecture, Software Engineering Process and Requirements and Specifications. There was overlap, of course, and I took many CS courses. I also took CE courses, Human Factors courses, etc.
Has anyone else noticed that Ask.com's Maps allows you to drag markers around? Bring up a point-to-point direction search and drag one of the markers to another location. Ask seems to search for the address nearest to that location and then recalculates the driving directions. Pretty cool.
"Oh, uhm... would not time be better spent at kde.org fixing the many bugs in KDE 3?"
What makes you think they won't? Migrating to a new version of the Qt framework doesn't require rewriting all of the underlying logic, therefore allowing for bug fixes in a major portion of application code. Not to mention, there are plans for another release in the 3.x series (development can happen in parallel).
Also, you should be happy to know that the things you complain about, kicker and kdesktop, are slated to undergo a major overhaul for the KDE4 release.
Because eyecandy affects a larger number of people, and most hackers probably don't have dual monitors available on which to test. But it seems that you do, so get to work!

I believe this server keeps sending digits of PI indefinitely (most likely using the fun Nth-digit-of-PI formula). It's already a slow site, and will probably be slashdotted quickly. (This is not a dupe of the.com posted earlier)

It needn't be contracted: "Do you not know that?"
That's one way to deter would-be hijackers: require a wing walk to get to the cockpit.
Assuming you're using Firefox, click the down arrow next to the "back" button and select the page you want.

Actually, many animal shelters don't let you leave with an adopted pet until it is microchipped (and spayed/neutered for that matter).

Someone has done something similar, but used photocells from RadioShack instead of a webcam.

Google image search for 'KDE composite'. There is a lot of work being done in this area (transparency, shadows, etc.). This is in X.org, not just KDE.
