FYI Opera's M2 email client already does this searching thingy (more about it) and not having to download emails especialy the ones with attachements is a *good thing*.
With the risk of being OT here, the situation is rather simple. Think of the news as one giant magnifying glass. When a.ro cracker breaks and steals something news break and "Romanians did it again". There is no such thing as a cracking hype in my country but the news make the association between Romanians and cracking look so BIG, so strong, so people stop thinking that this might be just some poor smuck trying to get ahead in a country where people like my mom earn something like 100$ after 30 years of public service. This kind of crackers are present everywhere. Ok some of the.ro crackers were ingenious enough to crack some pretty tight servers but this doesn't justify generalizing.
People should STOP thinking that the world is black and white and START seeing the shades of gray. Good and Evil are in each and every one of us and the side the people see is often highly dependent on the angle of view.
Here is an example: Is Nicolae Paulescu EVIL or GOOD? If he is EVIL will you kill him if you have the chance to go back in time, if he is GOOD how come that he is such an anonymous considering what he has done for humanity?
I can't imagine much practical use, but it's still neat.
Couple the gizmo with some good AI software and it can turn into a mini RoboPet. It could use rechargeable batteries, have it's own pod where it could feed with energy... and with the help of a mini buzzer it can even sing. Add a little bit of LED technology and you could have you own voice activated firefly. All it takes is a little imagination.
I too hated whitespaces at first. But after playing with some code, after forcing myself to actually write something in python I discovered at fist an accommodation with the lack of {} and after a little while, looking back on code, I found myself smiling, it was in better shape than most of what I've written till that date... I could understand it better, I could see more and then I realised that the whitespaces that I hated at first were actually acting as a guardian, keeping my code together, helping me, this is the moment when I truly embrace them, the moment when I have fallen in love with the language.

If you put love in developing an open source project that love will get intertwine in the code and sooner or later people will notice that, people like Apache Software Foundation.
Adobe will port its software to Linux. Why? because Gimp is not Photoshop, because comparing Sodipodi to Illustrator is still a joke, because Kino is in dark ages compared to Premiere.
I could continue with Macromedia's Studio MX (Dreamweaver/Flash) but that's not something I use a lot however embedded DivX movies in PowerPoint presentations I do use so... OpenOffice?:) yeah... it is great but... only as long as you don't want too much from it.
Linux IS ready! It is already way better than Windows BUT as long as Microsoft will have the silent collaboration of the other big boys (Adobe, Macromedia, etc.) Microsoft will win.
The moment the OTHERS will start using crosspatform toolkits like wxWidgets or QT and produce versions for all the major operating systems is the moment when Microsoft will loose, it is the moment when they will go down.
One ideea that will fix this and many other problems is mega widgets. Pick one cross-platform toolkit and create mega widgets like "Photoshop canvas" or "movie storyboard", "movie timeline" stuff like that, and create the GUIs via scripting (python would be nice)
This way if someone doesn't like the GUI of a certain program... he/she could change it or better yet... pick one from the net.
progress in technology means cheaper stuff so all progress is good and needed. Some people really enjoy 2 years old technology at the price of a popsicle.
Solid state memory combined with superfast networking might make my dream come true: networked processing and networked storage, one silent computer in my room and a cluster made out of the cheapest CPUs in the basement.
1) It will feed the hungry if money spent on licences go charity/ social support.
2) It will bring world peace if people learn from its value of freedom, and its proof that it doesn't matter where you live, it doesn't matter how rich or poor are you, it doesn't matter what color your skin is you can still contribute to making this world better.
3) You got me here, I admit it cannot "Become a viable renewable power source" maybe just "Become a viable platform for people researching renewable power sources" (searching on Google for "renewable power source" linux does show 108 results;) )
this shouldn't have been a fork in Gaim but rather a joint venture between developers of IM software to create a library or a set of libraries that will handle the voice and video protocols, this way all the IM software would have benefit.
we don't need another hero (toolkit)!
It is not the toolkit that is needed but a shift in programmers mentality. We should stop wasting time and use the wisdom of people whom are way better than us at this. We should use PATTERNS. Like MVC for example. When applications will have all the code separated in Models, Views and Controllers toolkits will become irrelevant because as long as you can access the model you can create your own Views and Controllers. The use of higher level languages should be encouraged. The higher the language the easier is to understand the program and so more people can get involved. The cross-platform issue will fade due to the fact that there are already a lot of great cross-platform toolkits in which the View-Controller part can be implemented (scripted. The separation of the Model will have yet another benefit, no more reinvention of the wheel, at least in some parts. It could be highly optimized due to the fact that such an approach will encourage only one instance of the model per functionality. No more complex compiling schemes: script the interface (View-Controller) in python and compile only the model or provide it as a binary:.so,.dll, whatever.

It's Romanian NOT Romainian.
I'm not proud of what some of my countrymen did but I am proud to be a ROMANIAN.
I clicked the Vibrant Media link and got localhost. Well I guess is due to that big addition I did to the hosts file some months ago.
