Although I understand your point about embellishing resumes, I don't think that the USA has a lock in honesty when it comes to this, nor do I expect that there is a significant difference in other countries. Anyone searching for a job has to market themselves.. and that is just the first step.. Once you have gained the attention of a potential employer, you then have to close the sale. Although my current job is not in programming, it is technical, and required various skills.. My employer did test.. The tests covered various aspects of the job requirement.. Some technical, some problem solving, and multitasking.. After that phase there was the interview.. now I am not saying that these tests were difficult, they were not.. but it was a weeding process for the employer. The employer ended up interviewing people who's background history was compatible to what they were looking for, and had demonstrated basic competence in the skills they tested for. During the interview they could size up whether they fit in, and if so at what pay.

In a previous job, I was responsible for hiring people and it was a pain in the butt. Sad thing was we actually had an HR department, but they did little more than give me stacks of applications and resumes. In addition to my regular job, I had to hunt down and contact the few that were "somewhat" qualified and arrange to interview them. The job pool in my area was crap, and most went home with a "we'll let you know".. I would have loved to have had a pre-screening test and have HR give it, and only have to deal with those that passed.. that would have been great.. So I say.. test away, and have a little less stress.

What keeps getting overlooked in this thread, is that the phone call frequency GSM.. has nothing to do with the 3G frequency.. and although there are more GSM users on AT&T because of the i-phone.. the fact that they are using the 3G frequency has no affect on the phone calls being placed on the GSM network... What I would like to know, is if these "dropped calls" are specific to handsets (like the i-phone), because that would suggest there is maybe a problem there.. You see, if your Razr can operate all day without a dropped call, but your buddy with an i-phone gets dropped all the time, that has nothing to do with 3G, or even the GSM network, but more to do with the receiver in the phone.. Blasphemy I know.

The submission is misleading in suggesting that i-phone data usage is causing dropped calls.. phone calls are not made over the 3G network.. They are made over the GSM network, which is what all cell phones AT&T users use.. Now that AT&T may have a larger number of users because of the i-phone is relevant, but the users surfing over the 3G network have nothing to do with a dropped phone call of another user.

Dropped calls are also Dependant upon the model of phone you have.. if i-phone users are having a lot of dropped calls (I don't know), then perhaps that is something to look at.. I know someone who had an older Samsung phone that dropped calls a lot, switched to a Motorola Razr using the same sim chip, and never had another dropped call.

Just a simplified FYI.. CDMA, and GSM.. These are the phone frequencies.. WCDMA, is the broadband (3G) Frequency, which is an "add on" to your mobile phone, so you can have things like Internet.. and this can be added on to the phone regardless of whether you have CDMA or GSM.. this is up to what 3G technology (there are others than WCDMA) the carrier decide to use..

Here is what happened.. In the majority of the rest of the world.. GSM is the standard for "phone" frequency.. In the US, Qualcomm came up with the CDMA phone frequencies, and the US carriers used it.. although AT&T (Cingular) switched to GSM, and the other GSM carrier "Voicestream" was bought by TMobile.... CDMA "the phone freq technology" did not take off in the rest of the world.. In the rest of the world GSM is still king.. So it is easy for the manufacturers of phones to design and build for GSM, and it's easy for consumers to swap phones from carrier to carrier, or to just get a new phone.. When you throw the US CDMA into the mix, then the phone has to be specially made.. and that means that the manufacturer of the phone, has to do some serious work to sell the phone to the CDMA carrier, like Verizon or Sprint.. who may or may not decide to carry it.

To put it mildly.. The use of CDMA in the US is not retarded.. it's "special".

But the thing is with GSM it is easy to swap phones and carriers.. Then along comes 3G.. You would think, "lessons learned".. but nooooo.. now you have swappable GSM phones but the 2 major GSM carriers have different 3G frequencies... I don't know where the FCC is in all this, and maybe there is some logical explanation behind it, but regardless it has screwed over the consumer in the US.. All the really cool stuff in phones is childs play elsewhere in the world.. So to those who posted way back when, their love for Qualcomm and the superior abilities of CDMA.. well here you are.

Not to defend the movie, that to me wasn't "all that", but when telling the story of any large tragedy it does help people to understand the significance of an event when you can focus on the story of a few who went through it.. I think Titanic failed a bit in that, by too narrowly focusing on two people.. If you compare that with Saving Private Ryan, which is the same idea but done much better and with more characters to care about, then the technique of telling a story within a large event is acceptable and does not diminish the tragedy.. I could (and do) just as well send emails to those of my friends that have it... so the loss in messaging dollars is restricted to those with a data plan, who again also have a minute plan.. at the price point of $20 for unlimited messaging which is the same for non data phones with AT&T, it would be more cost effective for the SMS users to switch to data plans on their phones and have unlimited email and enjoy the web too.. At this point, GV savings become moot.. Really it all boils down GV giving you a break in communicating with people who only have SMS, and half those dollars are still retained, by whatever carrier they are on.

As to the international phone call savings, there are already many ways to save with phone cards.. perhaps convenience would eat into some of it.. don't know the impact, but again in all of this, I really don't think AT&T was sweating either one of these.

If you try and analyze the whole thing as to what would the impact be to AT&T with Google voice, there isn't any that makes enough sense to say "whoa.. you can't do that"... You see AT&T already gets paid for 1.) a minute plan ... 2.) an additional data plan .. this doesn't change with Google voice, and the only loss is perhaps dollars they "might" have made if people went over the minutes in their plan.. There may be some loss, as people switch to plans with less minutes, but probably most of the people that have the larger minute plans are people with multiple phones on the plan, and most of them are probably too worried about going over minutes and would be reluctant to change even with Google voice... So, when I thought about it.. I thought why would AT&T do this ?? What's the monetary reason ?? .. So it actually came as no surprise to me, that this was all Apple..
