I don't know about all the drugs in the article, but I do know that one of them "Ritalin" is basically nothing but speed.
It's a freakin crime that we use these drugs on hyper-active kids. My nephew was one of those who took this crap for a couple years. In my opinion he didn't need it. Me and my brothers were also considered hyper-active too, and we grew out of it just fine without taking speed.. Attention Deficit Disorder.. what a crock.. It's called being a boy.
Your numbers sure don't sound right.. but maybe it will gradually kick in a higher download rate. Perhaps you are one of those who needs the program the article was talking about ?.. I have usually found that with new releases of popular distros, bittorrent to be faster than FTP
I use aMsn, which is a Tcl/Tk app.. It's kind of a a hit an miss to get it just right.. As to looks, it's great.. It's the damn fonts. I have had them right before, where I could use all the systems fonts.. but it's screwed up since my last upgrade, and I guess I'll have to wait to see if the next version gets the fonts working correctly again. (I am not going to re-compile from source)
As all these "facts", are very obviously humorous exaggerations.. there is no offense to anyones beliefs. All this person has done is taken an opportunity to preach.. They are not offended, merely exploiting a joke thinking that this will somehow make someone turn to christianity, when often doing things like that only worsens their cause... because people do understand jokes, but don't understand people with narrow minds who do not.
Close races are close races.. can go either way.. that's when manipulation is useful... If there is no doubt that someone was going to win, and they didn't, manipulation would be kind of noticeable wouldn't it ?
Not bringing this up as an argument against owning guns, I could care less.. that's up to whoever wants one.. But, the whole "protection" reasoning just doesn't seem to fly very well with me.
I have never had an instance in my life, or those I've known, where a gun has or would have protected them. The closest story is an attempted break-in where shouting to the person that they had a gun and were calling the cops caused the person to forget about it and flee... (in that case they didn't even have a gun)
I think most instances where having a gun would actually help someone, they are caught off guard and surprised and don't have it at hand anyway.
Everyone is only as influential as they want to be. To influence others toward your point of view requires a great deal of work, unless it is blatantly obvious that your point of view is the correct one. To influence others to act on something requires an even greater effort... but as difficult as these things are, they can be they can be done.. of course you have to keep in mind that your point of view nay not be the correct one for everyone, and that no amount of effort would overcome the majority.
As to cameras... I would not wish that on anyone.. but it would sure be interesting if they were required when meeting with lobyists (including private citizens with an agenda)
First of all the government is not a corporation.. but in using that analogy, a taxpayer is more like a shareholder than an employer or a customer. The problem is, you can't sell your shares if you don't like the way the company is run.. and worse yet, you are forced to invest whether you want to or not... then of course we also have inside traders (lobbyists) who's' trading outside the system give them a larger say than the average shareholder.
It could be also argued, that you don't know where any of your "particular" tax dollars were spent.. for all you know the taxes you in particular paid for the last 15 years were not spent, and others dollars (as well as debt) were used, and your big nest egg is actually paying a salary... who's to say ?
One last note.. The term "public servant" is supposed to mean you work for the public.. so a public servant has a whole lot of employers who pay his salary... now it may be "laughable" to the guy with the 200k a year job, but it's really not funny... and yes you damn well do have a say as to hiring, firing, and what they do on the job.. the government isn't omnipotent "yet".
in most programs, tools come from a menu that is fixed/attached to the window that contains the image that I'm working on.
ummm... the tools are in a menu in that very window... true that they are "ALSO" in the window titled "gimp" which is the toolbox...
If you look at the "tools menu" in "the window of the image your editing", there is a menu item called "toolbox".. this pops up the toolbox if your having such a hard time finding it.
Now, since you brought up the color pallete, it is true that the selector for foreground and background colors is not in the tools menu of "the window of the image your editing" so getting to the toolbox is necessary.. but it's not that hard and there is even a keystroke shortcut "CTRL-B" that will pop it up (even easier than using the tools menu)... it's not rocket science.
I am interested in how you got apt-get to work and install flash, but yet the network wasn't connected yet... did it come on a CD repository or something ?
You knew that the login manager was different, why didn't you just install GDM instead of a complete Ubuntu replacement ? this would have in essence given you the ability to switch back and forth (as you obviously know) and perhaps work out the kinks in gOS.. although maybe everything worked out for the best as it was..., it wasn't too helpful for gOS users who probably don't have an Ubuntu CD handy like you apparently did.
one that was rolling over itself... breaking wave top part where you steer the boat... bridge or pilot house
If the wave hit them from the side, there would be an extreme danger of rolling over (capsizing)
Facing a wave head on also has a danger of flipping. An angle as opposed to head-on or from the side probably has the best chance of riding through it.
I agree with you that authors should demonstrate more simplistic ways of doing things in their articles. For example, you don't see articles where a windows user opens up a command prompt to copy a file, even though you could do it that way.. I suppose when an author uses apt-get in a terminal as opposed to the simpler to understand Synaptic he is bragging about his knowledge of the command line.. which in not helpful to potential users (although may benefit new users)
If you are a particularly fast typist, and have good knowledge of the command line and file names, apt-get can be a little quicker, as there is loading the gui program and then searching for the program and finally installing.. but we are not talking a huge amount of time.. and in truth you may find alternative in your search that you didn't know about.
I mention Synaptic, which is in Debian based distros like Ubuntu. There are of course other similar gui software "package managers" for other distros and for the most part I think that reviewers do test them out.. and they should, because it is a good indicator of how good the distro is. If things like Flash are not readily available in the package manager, then the distro community is not too great.. and you should look elsewhere. I personly think the Debian based distros are the way to go mostly because of apt-get and Synaptic.. your millage may vary.
The problem many police have, is they feel that it's compliance or pay the price. Your drunk cousin told off an officer, verbaly I take it... how dare someone speak to a cop like that ? Attacking him escalated the situation.. where talking him down a bit, and asking him to do things leading to hand cuffing might have worked.. but we'll never know.
The problem is fear. I can guarantee you, the big guys will have a higher rate of tasering, and less chance of compliance than say a 90 lb 70 year old lady who calls the cops every name under the book.. and really they should have the same chance.
I popped up a terminal window and installed it using "sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree." I didn't spend any time trying to figure out if a naive user would have been able to get through this step.
These are both issues related to the author, not Linux or this distro.. He could have just as easily installed with Synaptic, or as the other poster says, the web site... I also notice you using html tags, which is about as complicated to understand as the terminal apt-get.. I guess this Slashdot thing will never become a mainstream player either.
Theres 20 people in the room..1 to 2 of them have a birthmark on their left cheek... how RARE.
Theres 200 people in the room..10 to 20 of them have a birthmark on their left cheek... how RARE.
Theres 2000 people in the room..100 to 200 of them have a birthmark on their left cheek... how RARE.
Given distances between galaxies 5 to 10 percent seems rare, but if distance didn't matter then this percentage is hardly RARE considering the vastness of the universe, and number of galaxies.
There are many strange oddities to the food business... for example...
If I am purchasing cups for my restaurant, they are non taxable.. but napkins are.
Food coloring is taxable.. don't ask me why, any other edible ingredient is non taxable.
If you were in the construction business, I would guess that it would be possible to have a resale card, and not pay sales tax (passing it to your customer later)
He is invoicing me for the freight to recoup the cost he paid for it. (or will pay once UPS or whoever invoices him)
The point is.. UPS collects tax for shipping.. to pay it again is double taxation.. example...
You sell me a carburetor for $ 200.00
UPS charges you 5.00 plus.35 for tax to ship it to me.. 5.35 total
Traditionally, the invoice is like this.. ..Carburetor.... $ 200.00 ..Freight........$ 5.35 ..Tax............$ 14.00 (using tax on goods only) ..Total..........$ 219.35
Heres how it works the other way... ..Carburetor.... $ 200.00 ..Freight........$ 5.35 ..Tax............$ 14.37 (using tax on freight and goods) ..Total..........$ 219.72
So the state has collected.35 cents from him, and.37 cents from me, for the same shipping charge in the latter version.
Always bugged me.., food was non-taxable labor was non taxable but prepared food (food + labor) WAS taxable
Now in a different state, and I am running into this scenario that makes no sense to a former Californian..
Invoice has.. .....Goods .....Freight .....Tax on total of Goods + Freight (as opposed to just tax on goods)
This makes no sense because that is a double tax.. right ? The supplier paid the tax on freight once (to UPS).. why am I paying it again (but higher) ?
When you realize that most real money these days is itself intangible, existing entirely within networks of communicating banks and such, the analogy becomes even clearer.
And yet the bank WILL replace your money when there are charges to your credit card you didn't make.
You served your country, followed orders, and did some good I'm sure., however..
To claim your fighting for everyone in the US, and the world, etc.. is just insane dogma.. first I don't believe you.. and second if you truly believe that you are out of touch with reality.
To serve your country is honorable. (done it myself) but to expect people to appreciate you doing something for "them", that they don't want you to do for them, and really isn't doing anything for them, is expecting a lot... To clairify.. I appreciate you serving, but don't expect me to appreciate you fighting for "my rights", because that is not what is happening here... regardless how many times it's said.

Just my 2 cents, your mileage may vary.

Well the overlooked bright spot in the article is that there were 86,500 survivors to begin with.. see Nukes are not so bad after all.

Using this law, wouldn't it be illegal to make a mixed tape from your CD collection ?.. after all you would be changing the format.
