What the heck makes you think an optimist doesn't also have, or won't make, contingency plans ?
That you generally have an outlook that things will work out, doesn't automatically make you single minded. A true optimist sees little point in expending energy on worrying.. this energy is better used at finding what will produce a positive result.. Also, an optimist would not be affected by a pessimists stress, but rather they would be annoyed at the wasted energy.
Things go wrong (and right) for both optimists and pessimists regardless of how much it was worried over... and both optimism and pessimism can be self fulfilling.
I believe he asked YOU what you thought was wrong with the UI.. whether or not likes Gimp doesn't mean that what he might say in response to your answer would be biased.. he might agree with you, or he might point out something you didn't know... For all you know, he may have the power to fix the dang thing to your liking... but you can't get past his username, so who knows.
You know, I always hated Bush from day 1, back in 2000.. But I did like Cheney at that time.. Would have probably even voted for him if he had been running instead of GW.. but he had me fooled big time.
Even now, it's not that he's an idiot.. it's that he thinks everyone else is.. and that they can't see through his self serving crap.. and that he doesn't care even when they do see through it.. And of course he's not going to run for president, he's already made a killing, and set up the future for more... He is absolutely no PUBLIC servant of any kind.. and deserves to be tried for war crimes along with his co-conspirators. Course that won't happen because, we just don't do that kind of thing to our high government officials, because that would admit that the US is wrong, and we never admit that.
There are a large number of elderly people playing golf, who have croaked from heart attack at the golf course (apparently Bing Crosby had just finished a round and died on the way to the clubhouse).. There are people who say golfers are not athletes, of course they have never golfed (and definitely not without a cart), I would say that the fact that so many heart attacks happen, show that it is a strenuous (and stressful) sport. Someone out of shape and newly retired is going to get pretty tuckered hitting a bucket of balls, let alone playing 18 holes.
I've dodged (and been hit by) many a golf ball, and it can be a dangerous sport.. I don't think there are many multiple fatalities though.
Don't know why Dell would have decided against Nvidia chipset for video for laptops. Doesn't make much sense considering that Nvidia has always had better support on Linux. The only thing I can think of is they went a safer route, in trying to keep people from playing with things like compiz-fusion.. But the other thing to remember is that it has only been recently that Nvidia is making any kind of inroads into video on the Laptop. This has been dominated by Intel and ATI for a long time... Desktops are a different story, Nvidia has been the dominant one there in general because there are both many motherboards with Nvidia onboard, as well as being the prefered add on card. Intel may have a lot of onboard chipsests, but you don't see people buying an intel add on video card.
I am not a laptop user, so I don't know about add in video cards for them.. sounds difficult to install, but probably more than that it probably would use a lot of power. If I was in the market for a laptop though, I would be looking for nvidia video specifically because I use Linux. Again I don't see why Dell didn't go that way, other than perhaps what they had good availability of hardware with Intel chipsets at their target price, but didn't for nvidia ?
Nahh, flash drive too easily confused with those wafers things used in digital cameras.
Key drive, although it makes size sense, is confusing given the fact that there are drives with and without "security" software.. which given that theres is a diversity in OS's in use, makes one not want a drive with software for an OS they don't use. Does a key drive have security keys for an OS I don't use ?... you see the problem.
I thought "thumb drive" was perfect.. Don't see why people have changed it...
That makes sense. You wouldn't expect them to offer you software support for your Suse install.. As far as upgrades.. not that I can see upgrades necessarily making some hardware permanently unusable, I can understand how they might not want to pay to fix driver issues to get it working again.
I guess it would depend on the hardware that broke, whether you would be SOL after upgrading. If you were able to reinstall, who's to know... If it was say the power supply, they'd probably just fix it.. I kind of doubt they'd check the Ubuntu version.. but who knows.. If it was the video card that crapped out, and you were running and upgrade with different drivers.. then they might freak on you and make you pay... maybe,.. or maybe they would play nice to give customer support... If the hard drives dead, I guess they are not going to know what you had.
For the most part, I'd say you were pretty safe playing with upgrades to Ubuntu.. but you have to live with and work on any problems yourself, and revert back to your original version if it's not working out for you.. Although I would imagine that Dell might try and work with Ubuntu for future upgrades that will not void your warranty.
If you are into math (usually people who use math), and can appreciate it, you would enjoy watching it.. Just as people who are into golf (usually people who play golf) can appreciate it, and enjoy watching it.
Legal Execution: 1-in-58,618 (unless you live in Texas)
Asteroid Impact*: 1-in-200,000** (would like to know how many total in the last hundred years)
Terrorist attack 1-in-80,000 ?? (I doubt this, even globally.. although taking into account "conflicts".. maybe, but legit terrorist attacks ?)
There are sales reps that I deal with who do stuff like that.. salesman22@(yahoo or hotmail or gmail).com.. or their personal home email account.
It's not very professional, and doesn't give me good feelings about their company... I understand the convenience and ease of having the web mail accounts, but it make me that think either their company is nothing but cheap bastards, or that the salesman is shady by keeping his email separate from the company. (they are representing their company)
Now, an address of salesman22@(the company).com really guarantees nothing, other than they care how their business is perceived.. and that they want to be professional.
When choosing between two unknowns..., a professional appearing company, and bobsgotstuff4u@(hotmail).com.. who do you think I will give a try ?
Tried Beryl (in Linux Mint Celina), and now Compiz Fusion (Debian Lenny)... both 64 bit. Have had crashes in both.. but seem to have less in Lenny with Compiz Fusion... This stuff is soooo damn close to being stable. I am using onboard Nvidia 6200, and really fast enough for me, but makes me wonder what it would be like if I got a "real" video card.
Am I angry that I crash ? not really. I can turn off Compiz and run the standard window manager and be stable.. then I can turn it back on and get an idea what it would be like if I could keep it (for days instead of hours), and to tell you the truth I will be glad when it is stable, because I "would" like to keep it... so not angry, just anticipating the the future. It will get there,
So if the cost of support is built into the price of Windows systems.. what the heck are we paying all these IT guys for at my work ?
The whole cost of Linux vs Windows support is BS.. costs for both of them.. at least until they invent a machine that can zapp users with knowledge and common sense. Personally I think it's harder for someone (let's say not as knowledgeable) to screw up their Linux system.
I was thinking along the lines of the "Nvidia" effect, where good support for linux has made it the card recommende by geeks regardless of OS
Luckily, I don't think there is much support needed for a Linux user. If it can't be installed through Synaptic, then it's probably not a good idea for a non tech user.. luckily pretty much everything asked for is in there... although the multimedia codec thing is a bit of a problem.. I've been looking at Linux Mint though (I want to call it Mint Linux.. but I don't think that's correct) which may be an alternative as a give away distro, as then you don't have to explain how to get codecs installed. (although the "light" version you would). I haven't tried it out yet, so can't say yet, one way or the other, if this would be better for newbies than Ubuntu.
I think most people think of anti-Semitism as relating to religion.. In which case your comparison wouldn't work... but..
The problem with this is that first of all, the religion is very intertwined with the government that it is often called "A Jewish state"... and secondly, there is this notion of a Jewish "race" (like to see the genetic research on that one).. So since everything is so intertwined, I guess your right.
BTW.. My remarks are not meant to be anti-semitic, or anti-Israel.
I'm not sure how big a market it really is. If you unlock the phone, how many GSM networks in the US can you use it on ?.. I guess you could sell it to a furriner.. but I don't think there is the demand you think there is.
I don't know who this WE is though. I don't taser people who don't do what I tell them to.. or talk back at me. I am sure there are instances where a taser could be warranted, but I watched the library video and to taser a handcuffed person repeatedly is just very wrong. I kept thinking why doesn't somebody call the cops on these guys.
Cops have a hard job, and it's a strange individual that even wants to be a cop in my opinion.. there are good people who are cops.. there are also a lot of sadistic people who are cops (again IMO). Abuse of authority is all to commonly accepted by both those in the force and the public. and it shouldn't be. Cops ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO PUNISH CRIMINALS (that's the courts job)
The problem with accepting things like tasers is it's a very easy road to things like the NKVD. We should be going the other way, not down this abuse the citizens path.
Yes.. big stretch on my part.. Their culture, and religion is sexist.. he doesn't like it, wants it to be like his. (for what reason I don't know, other than to point and say... bad, bad.. I'm better)
Who says you can't opt-out of religion in Iran ? You honestly believe that everyone is forced to follow the muslim religion there ? You are just like the guy you defend.. You don't REALLY know squat about Iran.
Maybe it is all spin... but I still don't want my wife or sister to live there. Do you seriously think that Iran as a nation is not sexist? I have an idea, lets make Hillary Clinton wear a veil, and then ask her if she feels a sense of equality.
Why do you want every culture and country to have exactly the same rules as you ?... and I doubt you, your wife, or your sister have any intention of going to Iran or any other middle eastern country.. and I would question whether you have even been out of the US to visit any countries that "kind of" meet your standards anyway.
The veil thing happens to be part of the religion, So you don't want freedom of religion.. if it differs from yours.
It's not a bad thing, just saves a few seconds of switching to the tool window to deal with a file. The extra functions pertain to an opened image, and I suppose this way if you have multiple images opened it eliminates you from having to specify which image you are applying it to.
For example..., lets say you have 3 images opened that you are cutting and pasting from, to a 4 image. If the File dialog was only on the gimp tool bar, and you only wanted to save the changes to the new image but not the others, gets complicated doesn't it ?... I think the current solution is fine.
Most likely you were modded troll by someone who doesn't even know what Trumpet Winsock was. The GP, also seems to suggest that Trumpet was a Microsoft program, which is not the case. It was a shareware program that would allow you to connect Windows 3.0 and Windows for workgroups to the net with TCP/IP. It was shareware in the same sense that Netscape was.. and just like Netscape it was replaced with Microsoft replacements in Win95.
Some freaking people think the net was always like it is today, and can't imagine connecting with something like Windows 3.0.. So they will out of ignorance mod someone who remembers those days as a troll.... damn babies.
