It is unbeleivable how paranoid this world has become.
I of course don't think you should be stupid, and blindly put yourself at undue risk. IE: walking in a rough neighborhood at 2 am would not be good. But then I don't think the original poster was talking about this type of situation
When "TRAVELING"(from the original post).. I see no reason to feel threatend at all. In general you would have some secure form of transport to the airport or (train station perhaps in europe) where in general there are quantities humans. In post 911 there is even more "security" personel at these places as well, not exactly the smartest hunting ground for a mugger.
Paranoia is a very powerful tool, used to control the masses. Just say no
Using "dows" in trying to make someone think of the relationship to Windows in Lindows, Is no worse than.. Using "ux" in trying to make someone think about the relationship of Unix to Linux
I see nothing wrong with either... I also see no complaints when someone writes an application with "win" in the name, or "98" ir "2000" or "xp".. etc..
And incidentally, while I know it's very fashionable to bash Wal-Mart (kinda like wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt), what everyone seems to forget is that Wal-Mart has made it possible for lower-class people to live more middle-class lives.
And makes it possible for middle class people to live lower-class lives at the same time !
I refuse to upgrade to either win2000 or XP as a windows machine. I don't know how many drives have ended up in a ladndfill from installing NTFS, but I do know I have fixed a few that were given up for dead.
Delpart.exe is a little know utility, and I have even had to use it in conjuction with a low level format to fix drives.
As a side benifit, I have gotten a few free drives this way as well, so I am not complaining too much !
KEEP YOUR XP !!.. I dual boot Mandrake 10 and win98SE (although windows gets little use these days)

The major difference between distros is how they garnish the plate they are serving. Their web site, and the image they present has a lot to do, with the types of users they get.
For a buisness, a big name backing the distro means alot. It doesn't mean that "SkippysLinux" can't do everything that they can, it's just they won't be perceived as a "professional" distribution and will not be purchased to run a buisness.
For the average home user, ease of install, and a large base of easy to install programs means more. the help forums mean more as well.. (face it "good" distro support by vendor not gonna happen, even with the big boys, and,, MS is included !) And everyone wants games. some distros support this better. but again it CAN be done on ANY distro.
Any distro can be made to work for any user. You install, and remove programs. tweak it, upgrade this and that.. put in your own background, and system sounds. get the programs you want running. And you will be a happy camper, shouting to the world that the distro you use is the best !
Once youv'e gotten an image, I guess it's hard to lose. Kmart's cheap, only poor people shop there.. therefore Kmart sucks....... Why exactly is Mandrake not for a power user ? can you not install or remove anything on it ? Is there something in it that prevents you from doing anything with it that a power user does ? or is it that those who call it a Noob distribution are really saying that is not the distro that they learned to use their software installation tools with.
All distributions can be for the "power user" What makes them different is availability of compiled binarys, and if they are not available then you can compile from source... which all power users can do anyway.
Interseting, that you mention the personal google type tool for your own personal information.. I posted this.. my post at firefox on this very idea, and no one seemed to understand it, or I guess they didn't think it was useful, because very little replies. And even with your post, people skip right over it, to comment on the "innovation" topic instead. But I agree with you, that this would be cool. I think the browser is the place to start, but would be cool to have all apps have this "paste to" feature.
It's sad really,.. again and again I hear these comments like "linux is ALMOST ready for the mainstream desktop"
Exactly what is not ready ? what is it that can be done in Windows, buisness wise, that can not be done in Linux ? most Windows machines I've seen in buisness, are mearly fancy terminals anyway. Are the Linux "Office" equivelants really that inferior, or require that much training to adapt to ?
In truth, I beleive that Linux is more ready for the buisness environment than the average home user, and this is only because I think that installing programs in Linux is a little more challenging for the "joe average Windows dude" until he spends some time learning it.
I only have Linux on my home machine, (Mandrake 10 now) and I have had freinds visit (Windows only people) at first, other that showing them what icons to press to surf the net, they know not what to do.. after the initial dumbness wears off they realize... it's the same only different., I of course dazzel them with stupid tricks like running two Gaims and talking to each other on the same screen (I can hear the oooohhs.. out there) and showing them the transparent menu in KDE.. etc etc.. They use Firefox, and of course end up installing it at home on their own Windows machine at home.. but generally everyone thinks they could get along fine if their machine had Linux only as well.. but most don't really have the patience to learn the differance between running a "setup.exe" and installing a RPM.. I guess that's the real "learning curve" with Linux, is dealing with program installs. (I won't go into dependencies, I AM trying to present Linux in a possitive light)
Not to jump on the "my distro's better than yours" bandwagon,.. (I have tried many) But I would like to say, that the latest from Mandrake is really quite flattering to Linux, is easy for new Linux users, and even though I have a little more Linux experience, and could do the whole compile the system from source thing.. I keep ending back at Mandrake.
I think Linux is more than ready. perhaps a big company with a fancy slogan, could you know "just do it" or something.
perhaps "modesty" might be a good one to start with.

btw.. I use ext3 on my Mandrake, which is a journaled file system
Perhaps I mispeak to blame NTFS, as a file sytem. Instead I guess it is just Win200 and XP that kill the drives.
I would score you as funny too, as you spend your money replacing a trashed drive.
