-- It is the same with radio broadcasting, there is nothing to stop someone from recording the broadcast

I have found that often, the thing not working in Linux if not the hardware.. but the grey matter.

-- my sound doesn't work == volume turned down

-- my CD doesn't play == cable not connected to player

these are simple common mistakes they are made over and over again.. and easily solved with a little research,

Some distro's are better than others at "pre-solving" common mistakes like these. Some set the volume for you during install.. others like Mandrake give you a choice of reveiwing the hardware before finalizing the install (helpful when you have onboard hardware conflicting with add in cards)

I've done quite a bit of distro switching, perhaps too much to still be considered sane, and I keep heading back to the Debian based distros (currently I am Mepis - Zen dual booting) It's probably my lack of networking setup knowledege.. but they seem to always work with my DSL without doing a thing. (not that others haven't either just that is ALWAYS works with Debian based)

I remember the day (should take out my dentures for this).. when I spent days trying to get my modem to work in Linux.. what was it .. pppsetup.. and setserial or something (I forget).. now I don't use the modem, but it is always configured automagily for me now.

Dual booting is a good start (or live CD's if your chicken) but heck why not use Linux as it is bcoming now ? sheesh you might be surprised.

  8. New genes ? on Genetic Engineers Barking Up the Wrong Trees? · · Score: 1
Are there "new" genes being created in genetic engineering ? I don't think so. These people are are only mixing existing genes to create traits they beleive can be sold. Raw materials cannot be patented, however the process of combining them can, and the end product can. However, I think patenting living organisims is pushing the limits of our new "ownership" society.

I think of polyester. If suddenly all your clothes in you closet became polyester without your consent, and the manufacturers of polyester sent you a bill, how would you react ?

Perhaps another analogy would be interesting to examine, what would happen if you started a beer compay, and you create a beer that is identical to another major beer, to the point that the FBI forensics team couldn't tell, except for labeling of course. This is just a mixture of ingredients after all and it is possible that your mixtures somehow ends up the same. Unless you used some special patented process of brewing there would be no infringment, and of course the purchasers of the beer would have zero liabilty, AND if someone left cases of the stuff in your yard you don't owe either of the beer companies ANYTHING !

GM is nothing more that receipes. If they lose the secret sauce by not containing it, too bad for them. If it ends up in my yard I should owe them nothing. If they won't contain it and pay for it's removal and the restoring of my yard to it's original state, then they obviously don't accept the liabilties of ownership, and give up rights of ownership.

The situation now with the Debian distros is they seem to be xfree right now for the most part.

I have run some older games, like unreal goty & quake, and it was not too terrible to figure out, but I havent tried cedega or anything cutting edge.

If it was me, I would just pick a distro I liked, set it up for dual boot, and what works.. works, and what doesn't you reboot for... VectorLinux has a nice lilo menu ... (had to tie this in somehow...)

I went the long route of net installing Suse, and then xfce4 to get the xorg/xfce4 combo, because I wanted to try and experiment with transparencies. It's working, but I am happier with XFLD and synaptic than Suse and Yast.. even with the older kernel and xserver.
