wine isnt emulation (in fact it stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator), it is a re-implementation of the windows API on linux and it runs at completely native speeds. I use a number of games including the original half-life, diablo2, starcraft, etc under wine all the time without any difference in speed or performance between windows and linux.
since wine is a developing product many applications still are not usable on it, but the list is growing everyday. You should check it out.
but don't force it on people, you're creating unnessary pain.
you're right and wrong at the same time. All the time my friends, peers, family, etc manage to cajole me into cleaning their computers of the assorted spyware, adware etc. If they would use linux it would save me a lot of pain (course then they'd be calling up all the time to figure out how to do something).
as for the devices you named above, support has gotten monumentally better over the last couple years. I have a few different dvd burners and camera's lying around my house, many of which are non-names and yet they work perfectly fine (very often better'n windows) on my linux machines.
anyway, while you're right that linux is not completely ready to take the average desktop gamer/user by storm, its not nearly as far from it as you suggest.
go to your local "procurer" and get one that fell off the back of a truck. go to a store and they might remem your face or have cameras. Oh, and dont forget to wear your tinfoil hat while you're buying and using the printer:-P

feeding the offtopic troll here buuuut... for many things a 350mhz machine is just fine for daily use. You can do work processing, play music, browse the web, d/l music, etc on it. The machine at home that I SSH into from and other places school to run my (much of the time legal) bittorrent d/ls and to allow secure connections to the web and such from wireless networks is a 350mhz machine (running debian btw) that chugs along quite nicely. It doesnt take much power either, unlike my main desktop with pulls down power like a dog. My old laptop which I still use on occasion is a 300mhz machine and runs fine for most non-games things. so yeah, 350mhz machines are fine. And running gentoo might give it a boost to the preformance of like a 400mhz running something else due to optomization of software (though not a gentoo use myself I dont know).
ok, I'm tired and ranting about the usuability of old computers to feed a troll, I think I'll go to bed now....

wow, my HS (which I graduated from last year) was so much open than all these schools I'm reading about. "open campus" was all the time (god, caffeteria food was for when I had 2 mins before class and no time to grab food outside). My friends an I very often ran all over the city (NYC) to get lunch.
When we didnt have class we had frees, which meant the school had no claim on our time during that period (we could go out, home, someone elses house, whatever). As for lates.... I dont think I was on time to a first period class since 2nd semester freshman year. In many ways it was more like college than the HS I hear about from other people.

woops, yes it does
NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter, in contrast, transmits data at about 128,000 bits per second, or about twice as fast as a dial-up connection but a tenth the speed of the typical broadband Internet connection
I guess I was right....
from the article
For scientists eager to download bandwidth-intensive imagery and other data collected by planetary orbiters, probes and landers, the laser communications would offer a dramatic breakthrough in the amounts of information spacecraft can reliably transmit back to Earth.
itd be faster tdio signal.....
not sure, doesnt give nums, but it might be faster than 56k....

I'll reply as an intelligent debian user (a class you dont seem to believe exists).
let me be blunt. I compile plenty of software, but when I want to run a program I dont want to necessarily have to comppile it from source to run it. I want to be able to "apt-get install xxx" and have it done a minute later. It makes my life easier.
having said that, I'll address security. Do you really think that compiling from source makes you any more secure? my god, what an awful argument. Do you actually inspec t the code to make sure it hasnt been tampered with? if not, there's not extra security here. If you do.... then more power to you but in my opinion I dont have the time to do that.
It's like how I don't tend to go to McDonald's any more because I don't like the possibility of one of the people who work there spitting in my burger before it gets to me.
you should drink out of a hip flask then too, 'cause obviously someone might have poisened your water. Tell me, do you wear a tinfoil hat?
I believe in knowledge as a means to an end. It holds little inherent value other than what it allows me to achieve
so you dont believe that knowledge holds an intrinsic value in itself? I heartily disagreee here, there is a basic value in knowledge itself. Learning is an important thing to do, even if the knowledge gained is useless towards your life. If nothing else, learning keeps your brain engaged and the gears turning. Learning things outside your own field makes you a more rounded person and allows you to have an intellectual recreational pastime. In short, curiousity is a part of being human, and feeding that curiousity helps you not stagnate.
more like a good test, where if 99% of the compenents work but 1% doesnt they dont fly until they solve that 1%. Haste is no reason for sloppiness, NASA's engineers are doing things properly here
don;t know about actual nums (though I'm sure some arma whore'll dig 'em up) but ion is more efficient for longer distances (i.e. the farther you go the faster you go). This is due to the fact that its a constant acceleration requiring little/no fuel. It doesnt give great initial thrust as compared to normal engines, but it can build its speed gradually to approach (though of course not reach) the speed of light. for stopping at your destination you could do a burn of a fuel based engine.
so the short answer to you question is yes, thoug cyogenics are even farther from usefulness right now than this is for such type of travel.
while microsoft bashing is always great here, lets put it in perspective. people who have paid accounts like myself dont have these problems. I also have 2gb of storage and a rather large attachment limit. Now you may say, look google has thes features and they're FREE, why dont you switch? I say this,
1) I've had my hotmail account for many years, and since its my primary accoutn I couldnt switch if I wanted to, I need it - too many people have that address. The only downside I have with hotmail is they dont want you to check it with pop. I solved this with a free copy of entourage for laptop curtesy of my school (and its a dammn fine piece of software actually) and hotway daemon on my desktop.
2) gmail is still beta. thats right folk, who knows, maybe in a year or so when they're done free accounts will be crappy and you'll have to pay for good service.
lets be blunt here people, you get what you pay for. Free may not necessarily be the greatest (free software doesnt count, its pay comes in the form of many people putting in many hours to make it work).
so go ahead and bash M$ by all means. I hate 'em too. But dont needlessly bash. Your free hotmail account does not have that many gaurantees on it. If you pay the $25 a year you'll get an incredibly good email service.
