are you kidding? Kids will get aroudn this just as easily as kids in my highschool (or for that matter me and my fellow undergraduates) get beer. This wont help the problem of people not having intelligent conversations with their kids about the difference between reality and a videogame, itll make it worse because apathy will set in and parents will leave it up to a flawed system to do the job for them.
ah but they users do use their brain, thats the problem. Honestly, I work in a computer lab in my school, most of my users run into trouble when they try to figure out how to do something instead of just asking
while an interesting idea in itself, I hope it doesnt get expanded to something more.... complete. I.e. I hope that it doesnt evolve into "well, we already have chips in people, lets expand it to be a national ID".
as is however, this makes sense. keeping your medical history on a chip could definately help in emergencys and such involving people with various conditions. I wonder if things like defrib and such would affect the chip though...
What looks different about this program is that the "balloons" will move at a very high altitude.
they're also a hell of a lot larger and carry alot more stuff. They probably have more anti-terrorist failsafes as well
btw, nice sig, zelazny's my favorite author
not last and not least: having someone working on a server is probably most stupid idea in the whole IT. Whatever OS you use, beleive me, users will find a way to devour 98% CPU time and 99% of memory.
I think the author was talking about using a desktop type box using standrad desktop components, not actually a desktop machine on someones desk doubling as a server
so to overcome the (not really all that many) shortcomings of sql we will all learn how to use something completely new. Yeah, adoption going to be quik and complete........
ok, maybe I misread your post above. In point of fact, while I bukd my desktops and servers, I do have a powerbook and rejoice in the fact that it "just works". I also do tend to point out to my friends buying computers that macs really arent more expensiv, which is what your saying. The only thing i was objecting to was that in the context of slashdot, such lists do have some relevance because the time is not a factor, most geeks would rather spend time than money.
I build my desktops myself, always. The reasons: I have the inclination, I do run linux, I dont have loads of money, I do have time to build it. Yes, if you arent a computer person, this isnt a good idea. You will screw up on components, forget the cpu fan, break pins etc. But remember, this is/., the focus of this site is geeks. They are the ones the initial ask/. was asked of, so your rant makes no sense within context.
he just has a shitty job.....
Actually though, in all seriousness, perhaps he gets something out of it (altruistic human kindness, etc). being an IT manager is a completely thankless job though and a catch22 from the beginning to the end
I'm first of all going to ignore the fact that you said a vinyl fucked at a party since the images conjured up by that are disturbing....
now, about "the medium" argument you have, its flawed. You see, the medium is the file format. What the music industry would want ideally is to be able to every few years release a new, better, higher quality, old devices wont play it, format. So you see, in the digital world there is still a medium (oh, the players themselves count too)
I think that RFID for some reason just always triggers a negative response from the/. hivemind, whether merited or not.>/I>
of course it's meritted. When you have a strip of information on your card it has to be swiped first, i.e. no-one can steal my information simply by brushing against me in the street.
interesting. I had to modify some permisions to get it to work, so the fact that it needs root permisions + loopholes to work makes sense. I didnt think about it at the time (thought it was a bug with the record tools, though I guess in part it is as they need to use loopholes to work), but I guess the whole problem is caused by a kernel bug afterall.
As for the sig, Amber is an amazing series. Zelazny was one of the best scifi/fantasy authors around, I doubt his stuff will die anytime soon. Always good to meet another Amber fan though!
While there certainly have been Christian, et al, terrorists, they pale in significance by orders of magnitude to those of Islam. No bigotry in this statement, just facts.
Islam is a much younger religion than most, Christianity, Judaism, etc. Islam's current state and that of most other religions cannot be compared accurately; the others have had time to streamline themselves in a way that Islam has not yet. i.e. it's heading into an age of reform that happened several hundred years ago in Christianity and a millenia ago in Judaism.
completely. While I cant comment on online dating (wait, dont mod me offtopic, it applies), I can on dating in general. I'm no looker,I'm damn short, and a geek (I'm posting on/....) But as the parent says, its all about attitude. I've never had a shortage of girls to date (and I'm rather picky)
Project a confident, self-assured attitude and it's amazing how differently the world responds to you.
exactly, it pays off. The girl I'm currently dating and have been for close to two years now is beatiful, smart, and a geek to boot. Also, try actually considering the women you're dating on an individual basis instead of some possesion you're competing for, it might help. --Anubis

Indymedia is not aware as to whether Rackspace is still under gag order.
I would tell you, but then I'd have to kill you
so the servers are being re-served?

you'd have to reverse the polarity to make it work

I agree with all but one thing you said

now I can drink coffee, get my work done, and masturbate while browsing for porn

Brakes, Brakes Burning bright
on the highway, in the night
what awful error made system die
and made the poor driver cry
On what distant tollboth lies
The crappy break that you did buy?
What disaster did you sire?
And with what rod did you make fire?

They even extended a challenge to get the first user to completely fill up the account, the winner getting a 1 terabyte account
