its approximately 10% of our troop strength. We also have committed many other resources other than just troops to iraq and bush just announced plans to WITHDRAW troops from korea and other places.

this presents two problems. While troops may not be the way to contain a nuclear power, political power is. When we remove our troops and then the n. koreans do this the US looks weak politically. Since most nations arent very happy with us right now anyway, this is a Bad Thing (tm).

the second problem is our resource commitment elsewhere. The U.S.'s primary strngth is not military, its economic and technological. our economy is not doing well, and what resources we do have to commit are commited elsewhere in a war that shouldnt have happened (at least not when it did)

  7. yes! privatization on Hurricane Threatens Shuttle Program · · Score: 1

I completely agree. As long as space travel remains a municipal project, it will forever lag, forever be subject to budget cuts, forever be subject to the whims of politics. It must move into the private sector. Everyone looks at cost of space flight, the resources of the government and that of private corporations and says "only a government can afford it." However, the fact is governments dont spend nearly as much as the private sector as a whole could afford to spend. Not to mention, once there is an economic reason to do private space flight (be it colonization, mining, etc.), it will fall to the prviate sector to devolope it.

to summarize, manned space flight will not move far beyond what we have now until the private sector is the wind driving it.

alright, so I'll say first I'm a pessimist. But even so, there is no such thing as a end-all be-all solution to any problem in the world. A startek typ replicator would cause an enourmous number of problems in todays world. The markets on everything would fall through the floor, and it still wouldnt solve the food problem. The main problem with feeding everyone is cost and transportation. Here in the states for example, we pay farmers to burn their crops. Why? because it keeps the market steady. Why dont we give it to india? 2 reasons, one: we'd have to insure that it wasnt resold within a market touched on by the US's because that would hurt us (and every country has to selfish to some degree). two, and the more important reason to me: transporting it to india from the mid-west would be a huge bitch that nobody has the money to pay for.

but hey, it almost guarantees free internet in some neighborhoods.

tell me about it, one of my friends has no less than 8 unencrypted wireless networks accessible from his house.

The annoying thing about it is, I didnt know about that until after a day when I had to fix his computer. Dialed up to my ISP with my laptop to grab drivers. spent about half an hour online downloading them.

Went into his computer room (I'd d/ld the drivers in the living room so I could play cards while it d/ld and monitor it), put my laptop on the desk and immediatly his neighbors networks showed up. I guess they were too weak to penetrate the wall, but the computer room has a big window. I tested a couple of them, sure enough high-speed internet at my fingertips.

    I almost cried.

last time I went there, had to check my e-mail. Hooked up to the wireless network. SSHd into my machine at home. It was all good!

Moral of the story: check for unencrypted networks before you dial up.

ah, but han does have moral ambiguities, its a point thats made emphatically in the original film. On one hand he's a smuggler trying to make money at all costs, and on the other he's a guy who wants to do good. The character conflict is shown for example when han takes his money and leaves, but shows up to cover lukes ass at the end of the movie.

While I agree with you to some extent, I'll point out something:

hand shooting second doesnt neccesarily show he's beeing nice. It could just be a casual confidence masking his actual nervousness, something I've always felt was a trademark of the han solo character in the original films. Han may not shoot first also because he's a smuggler, and smugglers dont shoot before trying to talk their way out of something first.

just something for you to think about
